📌 QUICK ANSWER

The distance from Kanpur to Vrindavan is about 339 to 364 km by road, taking roughly 5.5 hours by car. The shortest way runs via NH 19 in about 339 km, while the fast Agra-Lucknow Expressway route is smoother at about 364 km. If you would rather not drive, you can take a train towards Mathura Junction, the main railhead for Braj, and a short drive on. Whichever way you come, the last leg into Vrindavan is only about 30 minutes from Mathura. To arrange a car and your Vrindavan darshan, call or WhatsApp +91 7302265809.

Kanpur, the great industrial city on the Ganga in the heart of Uttar Pradesh, and Vrindavan, the temple town of Krishna in the west of the state, are a comfortable half-day apart. Two good roads link them, the fast Agra-Lucknow Expressway and the more direct NH 19, and the journey is an easy long day or a restful overnight from Kanpur to the land of Braj. Here is how to make it, whichever way suits you. Plan your visit with our Mathura Vrindavan tour packages.

Key takeaways

  • Kanpur to Vrindavan is about 339 to 370 km by road, roughly 5.5 to 6.5 hours by car.

  • The shortest route is via NH 19 at about 339 km; the Agra-Lucknow Expressway route is smoother at about 364 km.

  • The fastest option is the Agra-Lucknow Expressway, about 364 km in around 5 hours 29 minutes.

  • It is a comfortable long day's drive or an easy overnight drive from Kanpur.

  • By train, travel from Kanpur towards Mathura Junction, then about 30 minutes by road to Vrindavan.

  • The last leg, Mathura to Vrindavan, is only about 12 to 15 km, around 30 minutes.

I am Gurudutt, born in Gokul in the Mathura district, guiding pilgrims through Braj since 2018, more than 50,000 of them. Kanpur and the cities of central Uttar Pradesh send many devotees west to Braj, and with the Agra-Lucknow Expressway and NH 19 the drive is smoother now than it once was. Here is everything you need, told by someone who receives these travellers at the station and on the highway: the exact distances and routes both ways, the train and other options, the best way to travel, where to break the journey, and the easy last leg into Vrindavan.

Kanpur to Vrindavan distance and driving routes

By road, the distance is around 339 to 370 km, and the drive takes about 5.5 to 6.5 hours depending on the route and the traffic. You have a real choice here: the shorter NH 19, or the faster, smoother Agra-Lucknow Expressway. There are three main ways.

The choice is between the shortest and the smoothest: NH 19 is the shortest in distance at about 339 km, while the Agra-Lucknow Expressway route, though a little longer, is often quicker and more comfortable thanks to the fast expressway. The route via NH 34 is longer and slower. On the day, live traffic decides the best line, and a car that knows the road picks it; our Mathura Vrindavan taxi service can carry you the whole way or meet you for the last leg.

Vrindavan to Kanpur distance (the return journey)

The road back is much the same, around 339 to 362 km, about 5.5 to 6.5 hours. If you are planning the reverse leg, from Braj back to Kanpur, these are the main routes.

Kanpur to Vrindavan by train

The train is a comfortable way to cover this distance, and Kanpur is one of India's great railway junctions, superbly connected. There is no railway station in Vrindavan large enough for most trains, so you travel to Mathura Junction, the main railhead for Braj, and take a short drive on. From Mathura Junction, Vrindavan is only about 14 km, around 30 minutes by road, and we can meet your train.

A few things worth knowing about the train:

  • Where to board: trains leave from Kanpur Central, a major junction, towards Mathura Junction.

  • How long it takes: roughly 5 to 8 hours depending on the service and route; overnight trains are convenient.

  • Book ahead: reserve your Kanpur to Mathura Junction ticket in advance, especially in festival season, when seats go quickly.

  • The last leg: from Mathura Junction we carry you to Vrindavan and around the temples in the right order.

Kanpur to Vrindavan by air

For this distance, flying is possible but rarely worth it. Kanpur has a small airport with limited flights, but Vrindavan and Mathura have none of their own, and the nearest major one is Delhi, from where you would still drive 3 to 3.5 hours to Braj. Since the road journey from Kanpur is only about five and a half hours, a car or train usually beats flying via Delhi door to door.

  • Nearest major airport: Delhi (Indira Gandhi International), about 150 km from Braj.

  • Flying via Delhi means a flight plus a 3 to 3.5 hour drive, so it rarely saves time from Kanpur.

  • Coming soon: the new Noida International Airport at Jewar will be closer to Braj once fully operational.

  • Our honest view: from Kanpur, the direct drive or a train is simpler than flying.

Kanpur to Vrindavan by bus

Buses are the budget option. State and private buses run from Kanpur towards Agra and Mathura, taking around 7 to 9 hours, from where a short local ride brings you to Vrindavan. It is cheaper than a car but longer and less comfortable over such a distance, and best suited to those travelling light and on a tight budget.

Which is the best way to travel?

The right choice depends on your time, budget and comfort. In short: a private car is the most flexible and comfortable, taking you door to door on the expressway or NH 19; a train from Kanpur's great junction is a restful, good-value alternative, especially overnight; flying via Delhi rarely saves time; and the bus is the cheapest but the most tiring. The table sets them side by side.

Mode

Time

Best for

Families, groups; direct and comfortable

Train

5 to 8 hr

Good, restful

Solo and budget travellers; good overnight

Flight via Delhi

Rarely worth it

Slower door to door

Only if already flying to Delhi

Bus

7 to 9 hr

Basic, tiring

Tight budgets, travelling light

A quick comparison. On this route a private car is the most comfortable; the train is the value pick, good as an overnight from Kanpur's junction.

Breaking the journey: Lucknow and Agra

The drive is long but smooth, and both the Agra-Lucknow Expressway and NH 19 have clean roadside stops with food and fuel, so a single short break for chai and a stretch is all you need. Agra, with the Taj Mahal, sits near the western end of the route, so many travellers pause there to add the Taj to their Braj trip, a natural and beautiful stop on the way. Plan one easy break and the journey passes comfortably.

What to see when you arrive

Once in Vrindavan, the darshans begin. The most beloved is the Banke Bihari temple, best seen early in the cool morning, and the grand Prem Mandir with its evening light show. Add ISKCON Vrindavan for its continuous kirtan, and in nearby Mathura the Krishna Janmabhoomi, the very birthplace of the Lord. After a long drive, an overnight stay lets you take the darshan unhurried.

Best time to make the trip

The cool months of October to March are much the best for the journey and for Braj itself, pleasant on the road and at the temples, while the summer of April to June is very hot for so long a drive. If you travel in the festival season, around Janmashtami, Radhashtami, Diwali or Holi, expect the town to be joyful but crowded, and book ahead. See our best time to visit Mathura Vrindavan guide for the seasons in full.

Tips for the journey

  • Choose NH 19 for the shortest distance, or the Agra-Lucknow Expressway for the smoothest, faster drive.

  • Start early for a comfortable long day's drive, or travel overnight by train from Kanpur Central.

  • Plan one short break at a roadside or expressway stop for chai and fuel.

  • Consider pausing at Agra for the Taj Mahal, near the western end of the route.

  • For the train, book a Kanpur to Mathura Junction ticket well ahead in festival season.

The honest bit

Honest words on the Kanpur to Vrindavan journey, from one born in Braj. It is a real half-day drive, about five and a half hours, so plan it well; an overnight stay in Braj makes it far more restful than a there-and-back day. You have a genuine choice of roads, the shorter NH 19 or the smoother expressway, and the distances and times here are approximate and shift with traffic, so choose by the day. For the last leg and once you are here, a car that knows the town saves you time and touts; if you would rather break the journey or stay the night, see our Mathura Vrindavan hotels. Plan the drive well, perhaps with the Taj on the way, and the darshan at the end is worth every mile.

Why Experience My India is the right choice

I was born in Gokul in the Mathura district, and I welcome travellers from Kanpur and across Uttar Pradesh every week. Guiding since 2018, more than 50,000 pilgrims, 4.5 stars on Google, WhatsApp first, 8 AM to 9 PM daily. Whether you drive or train in, we meet you at Mathura Junction, Delhi or your doorstep, carry you around the temples in the right order, and, if you wish, add Agra and the Taj to the trip, a natural stop on the way, with the stories told on the ground and no touts. One clear fare, and never a charge for free darshan.

Tip from Gurudutt: since Agra lies near the end of your route, make the most of it. Break your journey at Agra for the Taj Mahal at sunrise, then drive the last hour up to Braj for the temples, so one trip gives you both the Taj and the darshan of Krishna's land. It is the most beautiful way to shape a Kanpur to Vrindavan journey.

"“We came to Vrindavan with Experience My India and had a very peaceful family trip. The team helped us plan the Kanpur-side journey, hotel stay and local sightseeing in one package. We especially appreciated that there was no unnecessary rushing or pressure. Our guide was friendly and knowledgeable, and the evening at Prem Mandir was beautiful. Adding Agra and the Taj Mahal to the trip was also a great suggestion. We returned home very satisfied with the entire tour.”"
