Kshir Sagar and the Dauji temple at a glance. The detail follows below.
Who is Dauji? Lord Balarama, Krishna's brother
The Dauji temple at Baldeo is dedicated to Lord Balarama, the elder brother of Krishna, worshipped affectionately as Dauji (from 'dau', elder brother) and also as Baldev, Balabhadra or Sankarshan. He is enshrined here as a large, 7-foot-tall, dark-stone idol, together with his consort Revati Ji. Balarama is revered both as the loving, mighty elder brother of the Braj leelas and, in the deeper tradition, as a great expansion of the Supreme Lord, the cosmic serpent Shesha who supports creation. Baldeo is his chief dham in Braj and one of its most important temples.
The story of Kshir Sagar: the Ocean of Milk
The tank behind the temple has a beautiful origin story. By tradition, the sacred black-stone deity of Balarama now worshipped in the temple was, after being lost for ages, rediscovered lying at the bottom of this very water body. When the recovered deity was re-installed and consecrated with great ceremony, the local people and devotees, in their joy and devotion, poured milk from thousands of cows into the tank as an offering, so much that it was as if an ocean of milk had been made. From this the tank took its name, Kshir Sagar, the 'Ocean of Milk', echoing the primordial Kshir Sagar of the Puranas, the ocean of milk from which so many divine treasures arose. It is also known as Balabhadra Kund or Sankarshana Kund, after Balarama himself.
The purifying dip: bathe before you enter
Kshir Sagar is not only a landmark but a living part of the worship at Baldeo. It is a holy bathing tank and pilgrims traditionally take a purifying dip in its sacred waters before entering the temple for the darshan of Dauji, cleansing body and soul before standing before the Lord. The tank is a historic, brick-lined water body of about 80 by 80 yards, with bathing steps and this pre-darshan dip is a cherished custom of a Baldeo pilgrimage. (As at any sacred tank, take care on the steps and in the water.)

Where is Baldeo and how to visit
Baldeo (Baldev) town lies in the Mathura district, about 21 km from Mathura, on the eastern side of Braj, not far from Gokul and Mahavan. It is reached by road from Mathura in around 40 minutes. The Dauji temple, with Kshir Sagar behind it, is the heart of the town. It is naturally visited together with Gokul and the infancy sites of Krishna on the eastern side of Braj or as a dedicated trip for the darshan of Balarama. See our guide to Mathura Vrindavan temples and places and we can arrange your pooja and seva.
The festivals of Baldeo: Huranga and the Dauji Mela
Baldeo is famous for its festivals. The greatest is the Dauji Huranga, a high-energy, world-famous celebration played the day after Holi, in which the women of Baldeo playfully beat the men's shields with wet, dye-soaked cloth, in a joyful, roaring spectacle unique to the Dauji temple. The town also holds the Dauji Mela, annual fairs during major festive periods such as Dev Chhath and the full-moon days, when great crowds of pilgrims gather. The Dauji Huranga, played here the day after Holi, is covered in our dedicated Holi guide.
The honest bit
Honest words from one born in Braj. Baldeo and its Kshir Sagar are a holy, ancient and atmospheric dham, but a quiet, small-town one, not a grand tourist temple; its treasure is the mighty deity of Dauji, the sacred tank and the deep devotion of the place and that is its beauty. Come for the darshan of Balarama and the Ocean of Milk, not for grandeur. If you take the purifying dip, take care on the old steps and in the water. The legends here, of the deity found in the tank, of the ocean of cows' milk, come from the devotional and Puranic tradition of Braj and such ancient stories carry the variations of long telling; the sanctity is undoubted. Timings can change, so confirm on the day. Sought out with its story known, especially with Gokul nearby or at the wild Huranga, Baldeo is a rewarding and moving pilgrimage.
