By Road: The Routes Explained
The key to this journey is using the expressways. The fastest route strings together two of UP's great modern highways:
Via Agra-Lucknow Expressway and Purvanchal Expressway (about 715 km, the fastest): from the Braj side via Agra onto the Agra-Lucknow Expressway to Lucknow, then the Purvanchal Expressway east toward Gorakhpur. Smooth, fast, high-quality roads most of the way.
Via Agra-Lucknow Expressway (about 692 km, the shortest): slightly shorter in distance, using the Agra-Lucknow Expressway and connecting roads; a little slower than the full-expressway route depending on traffic.
Via NH 27 (about 718 km): the older national highway; similar distance but much slower, over 13 hours, so best avoided unless you have a specific reason.
For a journey this long, a comfortable car with a good driver makes all the difference. Our Mathura Vrindavan taxi can provide the vehicle and an experienced driver who knows the expressway network.
Vrindavan to Gorakhpur by Train
The railhead for Vrindavan is Mathura Junction, about 15 km away and one of the biggest junctions in north India. Gorakhpur Junction, in the east, is itself a major station, famous for one of the longest railway platforms in the world and is very well connected.
Good connectivity: many trains run between the Gorakhpur and Mathura regions, often via Lucknow and Kanpur; some long-distance trains link the two directly.
From Mathura to Vrindavan: take a taxi, auto or the local for the final 15 km to Vrindavan.
Booking: check live times, availability and the best direct services on the IRCTC website or app, as schedules change seasonally.
Train numbers and times vary and change often, so we do not list specific trains here; always confirm on IRCTC before you plan.
Vrindavan to Gorakhpur by Air
For this long route, flying can save time, though airport transfers at both ends reduce the advantage.
Near Vrindavan: Delhi (Indira Gandhi International), about 150 km away, is the main airport; the newer Noida (Jewar) and Agra airports are growing options. Lucknow is also reachable by the expressway.
At Gorakhpur: Gorakhpur airport (GOP) has limited domestic flights, mainly to Delhi and a few other cities.
The practical air option: fly between Delhi and Gorakhpur, then road at the Vrindavan end; or fly into Lucknow and drive.
Flying suits those short on time; pilgrims who want Ayodhya and Lucknow on the way usually prefer the road.
Vrindavan to Gorakhpur by Bus
Long-distance and state buses run across UP on this corridor, though for 700-plus km most travellers prefer the train or a car.
Via Lucknow: buses typically run via Lucknow, with services between the Delhi/Mathura region and Lucknow and Lucknow and Gorakhpur.
Comfort: AC and Volvo coaches run on the main legs; the full journey by bus is long and usually broken at Lucknow.
Best for: budget travellers; families and elders will find the train or a private car far more comfortable.
The Best Way to Travel: A Comparison
Here is how the options compare for a typical pilgrim, so you can choose what suits you:
Mode | Time | Comfort | Best for |
Private car | About 10 hours; stops as you wish | Highest; Ayodhya/Lucknow en route | Families, multi-stop pilgrims |
Train | Varies; plus the Mathura transfer | Good on fast trains | Most pilgrims and budget travellers |
Air (via Delhi) | Flight plus transfers both ends | Saves time if short on days | Time-pressed travellers |
Bus (via Lucknow) | Longest, usually broken | Basic to moderate | Budget travellers |
A general comparison for pilgrims; the right choice depends on your group, days and budget.
Breaking the Journey: Ayodhya and Lucknow
This is the best part of the Gorakhpur route: it runs straight through the heart of pilgrim UP. Ayodhya, the birthplace of Lord Rama, lies between Gorakhpur and Lucknow, an almost unmissable stop for a pilgrim making this journey and Lucknow, the state capital, is a natural overnight halt with its own history and cuisine. Many travellers turn the drive into a two or three day pilgrimage taking in Braj, Ayodhya and more. If you wish to combine Braj with the east, our Ayodhya and Varanasi tour is built around exactly these sacred stops. On the Braj end you can also fold in Mathura, the Krishna Janmabhoomi and Giriraj Govardhan.
What to See When You Reach Vrindavan
Once you arrive, Vrindavan rewards the long journey at once. The essential first darshans are:
Banke Bihari Temple: the most beloved temple of Vrindavan, the spiritual heart of the town.
Prem Mandir: the magnificent marble temple with its evening light show and gardens.
ISKCON Vrindavan: the Krishna-Balaram Mandir, serene and welcoming, especially for first-timers.
With a day or two more you can add the Mathura temples, Govardhan and Barsana for a fuller Braj pilgrimage.
Best Time to Make the Trip
The drive is doable all year, but the comfort of the journey and the Braj experience are best in certain seasons.
October to March: the best window; cool, pleasant weather for the long drive and for darshan.
Janmashtami (Aug to Sep): the great Krishna festival in Braj, wonderful but very crowded.
Holi (Feb or Mar): the famous Braj Holi season; magical but extremely busy on the roads and in the towns.
April to June: very hot across the UP plains; start early and travel with good air-conditioning.

Practical Tips for the Journey
Use the expressways; the Agra-Lucknow and Purvanchal Expressways cut hours off the old NH 27 route.
Start early; for a 10-hour drive, leave before dawn so you arrive in daylight, in either direction.
Consider splitting it; an overnight at Lucknow, with Ayodhya on the way, turns a hard drive into a pilgrimage.
Keep FASTag and cash ready for the expressway tolls.
Carry water, snacks and essentials, especially with children or elders on such a long journey.
Check live traffic and roadworks before you set out, as the fastest route can change by the day.
The Honest Bit
Let me be honest: 715 km is a genuinely long drive, around 10 hours even on the expressways and doing it in a single day with a family is tiring. My sincere advice is to break it, ideally with a night at Lucknow and a darshan at Ayodhya, which turns a gruelling haul into a memorable pilgrimage rather than an endurance test. Avoid the old NH 27 unless you must; it adds hours. The figures here are approximate and change with traffic, roadworks and the season, so check live on the day. For many pilgrims the train is genuinely the easier choice on this route, given Gorakhpur's excellent rail links, with just the short transfer from Mathura at the end. If you would like a comfortable base once you reach Braj, our list of Mathura and Vrindavan hotels will help you choose.
Why Experience My India Is the Right Choice
I am Gurudutt, born in Gokul, guiding pilgrims through Braj since 2018, more than fifty thousand of them by now. For a long route like this we provide a clean, comfortable car and a driver who knows the expressway network and the Ayodhya and Lucknow stops, so you travel safely and can turn the drive into a proper pilgrimage. We meet you on arrival, arrange your darshan in the right order and keep one clear fare with no surprises or hidden tolls and we never charge you for darshan that is free. We are a Ministry of Tourism certified operator with a fleet of more than fifty vehicles, rated 4.5 stars and we answer on WhatsApp from 8 AM to 9 PM.
Tip from Gurudutt: Do not try to swallow this route in one exhausting gulp. The expressways make it possible in a day, but the wiser way is to make the journey a pilgrimage. Break at Lucknow for the night, take darshan at Ram Lalla in Ayodhya on the way and arrive in Vrindavan refreshed rather than wrung out. Pilgrims who travel Braj to Gorakhpur this way tell me it became the trip of a lifetime, touching three of the holiest places in the north on a single journey. The road itself can be a blessing. |
