By Road: The Routes Explained
All the routes run west into Rajasthan and the fastest ones use the excellent NH 48, the Delhi to Jaipur to Ajmer corridor:
Via NH 48 (about 402 km, the fastest): the main highway through Jaipur and on to Ajmer, from where Pushkar is a short hop over the hill. A fast, well-built road for most of the way.
Via NH 21 and NH 48 (about 403 km): a similar distance combining NH 21 with the NH 48; a straightforward alternative.
Via NH 21 (about 418 km): a longer and slower option at over 9 hours, best avoided unless you have a reason.
The drive takes you through classic Rajasthan country and Jaipur makes a natural stop. A comfortable car with a good driver is the easiest way to do it. Our Mathura Vrindavan taxi can provide the vehicle and an experienced driver for the whole run.
Vrindavan to Pushkar by Train
Pushkar has only a very small station, so the practical railhead is Ajmer Junction, about 14 km away, a major station well connected across India. The railhead for Vrindavan is Mathura Junction, about 15 km from Vrindavan.
The usual route: take a train between Mathura Junction and Ajmer Junction, many of which run via Jaipur, then a taxi or bus for the final 14 km from Ajmer to Pushkar.
From Mathura to Vrindavan: take a taxi, auto or the local for the final 15 km to Vrindavan.
Booking: check live times, availability and direct services on the IRCTC website or app, as schedules change seasonally.
Train numbers and times vary and change often, so we do not list specific trains here; always confirm on IRCTC before you plan.
Vrindavan to Pushkar by Air
There is no airport at Pushkar itself and for a journey of about 400 km, flying seldom saves time once transfers are counted.
Nearest airport to Pushkar: Jaipur, about 145 km away, is the main gateway; Kishangarh (near Ajmer) has limited services.
Near Vrindavan: Delhi (Indira Gandhi International), about 150 km away, is the main airport, with Noida (Jewar) and Agra growing as options.
The practical air option: fly into Jaipur or Delhi, then continue by road; for this distance, most prefer to drive or take the train.
For around 400 km, road or rail is usually simpler than flying.
Vrindavan to Pushkar by Bus
Regular bus services run across this corridor, usually via Jaipur, so a bus journey is typically done via the Rajasthan capital.
Via Jaipur: buses run between the Mathura or Delhi region and Jaipur and between Jaipur and Ajmer/Pushkar.
Comfort: AC and Volvo coaches run on the main legs; the full journey by bus is long and usually broken at Jaipur.
Best for: budget travellers; families with luggage and elders usually prefer a car.
The Best Way to Travel: A Comparison
Here is how the options compare for a typical pilgrim, so you can choose what suits you:
Mode | Time | Comfort | Best for |
Private car | About 7 hours; stops as you wish | Highest; Jaipur en route | Families, Braj plus Rajasthan trips |
Train | Via Ajmer; plus the Mathura transfer | Good on fast trains | Solo and budget travellers |
Air (via Jaipur) | Flight plus long transfers | Mixed; little time saved | Rarely worth it for 400 km |
Bus (via Jaipur) | Longest, usually broken | Basic to moderate | Budget travellers |
A general comparison for pilgrims; the right choice depends on your group, days and budget.
Breaking the Journey: Jaipur and Beyond
The great advantage of this route is that it runs through Jaipur, the Pink City, one of India's most beautiful heritage cities and the gateway to Rajasthan. Many travellers break the journey there for a night, seeing the Amber Fort, Hawa Mahal and the bazaars, which turns a simple transfer into a proper Braj and Rajasthan holiday. On the Braj end, you can also fold in Mathura and Agra: our Agra, Mathura and Vrindavan tour pairs the Taj Mahal with Braj and the Krishna Janmabhoomi and Giriraj Govardhan are easy additions in Braj itself.
What to See When You Reach Vrindavan
Once you arrive, Vrindavan rewards the drive at once. The essential first darshans are:
Banke Bihari Temple: the most beloved temple of Vrindavan, the spiritual heart of the town.
Prem Mandir: the magnificent marble temple with its evening light show and gardens.
ISKCON Vrindavan: the Krishna-Balaram Mandir, serene and welcoming, especially for first-timers.
With a day or two more you can add the Mathura temples, Govardhan and Barsana for a fuller Braj pilgrimage.
Best Time to Make the Trip
The drive is doable all year, but the comfort of the journey and the experience at both ends are best in certain seasons.
October to March: the best window; cool, pleasant weather for the drive, for Braj darshan and for Pushkar.
Pushkar Camel Fair (Oct or Nov): Pushkar's world-famous fair, a spectacular time to visit the lake town, though very crowded.
Janmashtami and Holi: the great Braj festivals, wonderful in Vrindavan but very busy on the roads.
April to June: very hot across the plains and in Rajasthan; start early and travel with good air-conditioning.

Practical Tips for the Journey
Use the NH 48; it is much faster than the NH 21 route, which can add two hours.
Start early; leave before dawn to make the most of the day, in either direction.
Consider a Jaipur stop; a night in the Pink City turns the drive into a Braj and Rajasthan trip.
Keep FASTag and cash ready for the highway tolls on NH 48.
Carry water and snacks, especially with children or elders on the long drive.
Check live traffic and roadworks before you set out, as the fastest route can change by the day.
The Honest Bit
Let me be honest about this journey: it is a comfortable but full day, around 7 hours of driving and most of it is on the good NH 48 through Jaipur, so it is one of the easier Rajasthan runs. Avoid the NH 21-only route, which is noticeably slower. The figures here are approximate and change with traffic, roadworks and the season, so check live on the day. Pushkar and Vrindavan are both small, intense pilgrimage towns rather than big tourist cities, so come for the lake, the Brahma temple and the Braj darshan rather than for luxury. For a family, a private car is far easier than the train-and-transfer via Ajmer. If you would like a comfortable base once you reach Braj, our list of Mathura and Vrindavan hotels will help you choose.
Why Experience My India Is the Right Choice
I am Gurudutt, born in Gokul, guiding pilgrims through Braj since 2018, more than fifty thousand of them by now, many pairing Braj with Rajasthan. For a trip like this we provide a clean, comfortable car and a driver who knows the NH 48 and the Jaipur route, so you travel safely and can add a Pink City stop if you wish. We meet you on arrival, arrange your Braj darshan in the right order and keep one clear fare with no surprises or hidden tolls and we never charge you for darshan that is free. We are a Ministry of Tourism certified operator with a fleet of more than fifty vehicles, rated 4.5 stars and we answer on WhatsApp from 8 AM to 9 PM.
Tip from Gurudutt: Make the most of the road rather than rushing it. Break the drive at Jaipur, see the Amber Fort and the bazaars and arrive in Pushkar or Vrindavan fresh. Pushkar is best at dawn or dusk, when the lamps light the ghats around the holy lake and the rare Brahma temple is at its most peaceful, so plan your arrival for the evening. Pilgrims who pair Vrindavan with Pushkar tell me it is one of the most beautiful contrasts in Indian travel, Krishna's green Braj and the desert lake of Brahma, on a single journey. |
