The old town, near Banke Bihari

For the deepest pilgrimage, stay in the old town near the Banke Bihari temple, in the heart of the temple lanes. Here you can walk to the morning darshan before the crowds and live amid the bells and kirtan of the town. But be prepared: the lanes are narrow and crowded, cars cannot reach, so you park at the edge and walk with your bags and the stays are mostly simple ashrams, dharamshalas and basic guesthouses, not comfortable hotels. This area is for the devotee who wants to be in the thick of it, not for those seeking comfort or easy access.

Chhatikara Road and near Prem Mandir

For most visitors, especially families and those with a car, the best balance is Chhatikara Road, the main approach into Vrindavan and the newer area around Prem Mandir. The ISKCON guesthouse and the nearby MVT (Mathura Vrindavan Trust) guesthouse are long favourites with international travellers, clean, safe and used to foreign guests, with pure-veg satvik dining and the kirtan of the temple close at hand. It is a calm, welcoming base, a little apart from the crowded old town and much loved by Hare Krishna devotees from around the world.

Mathura, as an alternative base

Some visitors base themselves in Mathura, only 14 km away, rather than Vrindavan itself. Mathura has more and bigger hotels, the main railway junction and Krishna's Krishna Janmabhoomi and Vishram Ghat. The trade-off is the 30-minute drive to Vrindavan each day. Mathura suits those arriving by train, wanting a larger hotel or planning to split their time evenly between the two towns. For darshan-focused Vrindavan visits, though, staying in Vrindavan itself is usually better.
