The legend of the Braj Char Dham

The story is among the sweetest in Braj. Nanda Maharaja and Mother Yashoda, growing older, longed to make the Char Dham pilgrimage to the high Himalayas, to Badrinath, Kedarnath, Gangotri and Yamunotri. But the journey was long, hard and dangerous and their hearts were troubled by it. Seeing their wish, the child Krishna smiled and told them there was no need to travel so far, for all the holy dhams exist eternally in Braj and he would call them to appear here. And so, by his divine will, the four sacred dhams manifested upon the hills and ponds of the Kamyavan forest and Nanda and Yashoda took their darshan without ever leaving the land of Braj. It is a story of a son's love and of the truth that all holiness is present in Krishna's own land.

Boodha Badri: the Old Badrinath

How to reach and visit

Kamyavan is best reached by car, about 70 km and two hours from Mathura or Vrindavan, on the roads towards Barsana and the Rajasthan border.
