What is Vrindavan?

Vrindavan is the temple town where Krishna spent his enchanted childhood, on the banks of the Yamuna, the hub of any Braj pilgrimage. It is a town of some five thousand temples, alive day and night with bells, kirtan and devotion, home to the beloved Banke Bihari, the marble Prem Mandir, the kirtan of ISKCON and the grove of Nidhivan. It is easy to reach, only 14 km from Mathura, flat and walkable, with the town's hotels and stays, so nearly every Braj visit is based here. Vrindavan is Krishna's playground and the natural centre from which to explore the wider Braj.

What is Barsana?

Barsana is the village of Radha, the daughter of King Vrishabhanu, set upon Bhanugarh hill some 45 km from Mathura, out in the west of Braj. Its crown is the hilltop Radha Rani temple, also called Ladli Ji, one of the very few temples in the world dedicated chiefly to Radha, reached by about 200 to 225 steps or a ropeway or palki. On another peak stands the Maan Mandir and nearby lie the lovely Prem Sarovar and Sanket. Barsana is more remote and rural than Vrindavan, a hilltop village rather than a temple town and it is world-famous for its Lathmar Holi and for Radhashtami, Radha's birthday. It is a half-day excursion, not a base.

Vrindavan is the hub, easy and temple-rich, where you should base yourself; Barsana is Radha's own village, a beautiful half-day excursion you should not miss, especially for her darshan, for Lathmar Holi and at Radhashtami. If your time is truly short, a day or less, stay in Vrindavan and see its great temples; but if you can spare a half-day, go out to Barsana for Radha and ideally to nearby Nandgaon, Krishna's village, too. How they fit together: Radha and Krishna's Braj

The deepest truth is that Barsana and Vrindavan belong together, as Radha and Krishna do. Vrindavan is where Krishna played his leelas; Barsana is where Radha lived; and the wider Braj, Nandgaon (Krishna's village), Govardhan (the hill he lifted), Gokul (his infancy), completes the circle. The best time to visit

For both, the cool months of October to March are much the best, pleasant for the temples and for Barsana's hill climb, which is fierce in summer. Vrindavan is most vibrant at Holi and Janmashtami; Barsana at Lathmar Holi, a few days before the main Holi and at Radhashtami, its greatest day. Both are very crowded at these times, so plan ahead. • Base in Vrindavan, the easy, temple-rich hub and day-trip to Barsana for Radha's darshan.

• For Barsana's hilltop Radha Rani temple, arrange the ropeway or palki for elders.

• Pair Barsana with nearby Nandgaon, Krishna's village, on the same excursion.

• Come for Lathmar Holi or Radhashtami to see Barsana at its most spectacular, but book ahead.

• Give Vrindavan a full day or two for its many temples and the Yamuna aarti.

If you have only a few hours, stay in Vrindavan; if you have a half-day more, go to Barsana, above all for Radha, for Lathmar Holi and for Radhashtami.
