📌 QUICK ANSWER

Fatehpur Sikri to Mathura is about 63 km, around 1 hour 30 minutes by road, mainly via NH 44. Fatehpur Sikri to Vrindavan is a little farther, about 76 to 90 km, around 1 hour 40 minutes to 2 hours, since Vrindavan lies about 14 km beyond Mathura. Both are easy drives, best by car, and the two towns pair naturally with Agra and the Taj for a heritage-and-pilgrimage trip. To arrange a car and your Braj darshan, call or WhatsApp +91 7302265809.

Fatehpur Sikri, the magnificent abandoned Mughal capital of Emperor Akbar with its Buland Darwaza and the tomb of Salim Chishti, sits just west of Agra, and from it the sacred land of Braj is an easy short drive away. So a visit to this Mughal wonder combines beautifully with the darshan of Krishna in Mathura and Vrindavan. Here is exactly how far it is from Fatehpur Sikri to Mathura and to Vrindavan, the routes, and the best way to travel. Plan your visit with our Mathura Vrindavan tour packages.

Key takeaways

  • Fatehpur Sikri to Mathura is about 63 km, around 1 hour 30 minutes by road.

  • Fatehpur Sikri to Vrindavan is about 76 to 90 km, around 1 hour 40 minutes to 2 hours.

  • NH 44 is the main and fastest route to both towns.

  • To Vrindavan, the Yamuna Expressway route is longer at 90.5 km but slightly the fastest; NH 44 is shorter at 76.4 km and nearly as quick.

  • Vrindavan lies about 14 km beyond Mathura, so it is a little farther.

  • It is an easy add-on to an Agra and Fatehpur Sikri trip, best done by car.

I am Gurudutt, born in Gokul in the Mathura district, guiding pilgrims through Braj since 2018, more than 50,000 of them. Many who come to us have just marvelled at Fatehpur Sikri and the Taj at Agra, and crossed the short distance into Braj to add the darshan of Krishna to their journey, the Mughal heritage of Akbar and the divine land of Krishna in one trip. It is one of the easiest and most rewarding add-ons in all of North India. Here is everything you need, told by someone who welcomes these travellers every day: the exact distances and routes to both Mathura and Vrindavan, the other options, the best way to travel, and what to see when you arrive.

Fatehpur Sikri to Mathura distance and driving routes

Mathura, the birthplace of Krishna, is the closer of the two towns, about 63 km from Fatehpur Sikri, around 1 hour 30 minutes by road. The main route runs along NH 44, the Agra-Delhi highway. There are three ways.

The NH 44 route is the fastest and simplest to Mathura, and the one I recommend; the Fatehpur Sikri Road route is almost identical. On the day, live traffic decides the smoothest line, and a car that knows the roads picks it; our Mathura Vrindavan taxi service can carry you door to door.

Fatehpur Sikri to Vrindavan distance and driving routes

Vrindavan, the temple town of Krishna's childhood, lies about 14 km beyond Mathura, so it is a little farther from Fatehpur Sikri, about 76 to 90 km, around 1 hour 40 minutes to 2 hours. Interestingly, the Yamuna Expressway route is the longest in distance yet the quickest in time, because the expressway is so fast. Here are the three ways.

Fatehpur Sikri to Mathura and Vrindavan by train

For such a short distance, the train is rarely worth it. Fatehpur Sikri has a small railway station, but there is no convenient direct service to Braj, and Vrindavan has no major station of its own. If you do come by rail, travel to Mathura Junction, the main railhead for Braj, and take a short drive on. For most travellers, though, a car is far simpler over this short hop.

A few things worth knowing about the train:

  • Railhead for Braj: Mathura Junction, about 14 km and 30 minutes from Vrindavan.

  • No convenient direct train links Fatehpur Sikri to Braj, so a car is usually better.

  • If arriving by train from elsewhere, we can meet you at Mathura Junction.

  • The last leg: from Mathura Junction we carry you to Vrindavan and around the temples.

Reaching Braj by air

There is no sense in flying such a short distance. If you are arriving in the region from farther afield, the nearest major airport is Delhi (about 200 km), with Agra's small airport nearer but far less connected. From Agra or Fatehpur Sikri, it is only a short drive into Braj, so you would travel by road in any case.

  • Nearest major airport: Delhi (Indira Gandhi International), about 200 km from Braj.

  • Agra has a small airport with limited flights, closer to Fatehpur Sikri.

  • Coming soon: the new Noida International Airport at Jewar will be closer to Braj once fully operational.

  • For the Fatehpur Sikri to Braj leg itself, a car is always the answer.

Fatehpur Sikri to Mathura and Vrindavan by bus

Buses are the budget option. Local and state buses run from Fatehpur Sikri via Agra towards Mathura, taking around 2 to 2.5 hours, from where a short local ride brings you to Vrindavan. It is cheaper than a car but less direct and comfortable, and best for those travelling light and on a tight budget.

Which is the best way to travel?

For this short hop, the choice is simple. A private car is by far the best way, direct, comfortable and door to door, and it lets you combine Fatehpur Sikri, Agra and Braj at your own pace. A bus is the budget alternative but less direct, and the train is rarely worth it for so short a distance. The table sets them side by side.

A quick comparison. For the short Fatehpur Sikri to Braj hop, a private car is clearly best.

Breaking the journey: Lucknow and Agra

This is a short enough drive that you need no break along the way, but the real joy is what sits at either end. Fatehpur Sikri itself, with the towering Buland Darwaza, the Jama Masjid and the marble tomb of Salim Chishti, deserves a good couple of hours, and the Taj Mahal and Agra Fort are only about 40 km east. So the natural plan is to see the Mughal wonders of Agra and Fatehpur Sikri, then cross into Braj for the darshan of Krishna, a perfect blend of heritage and pilgrimage.

What to see when you arrive

Once in Braj, the darshans begin. In Mathura, see the Krishna Janmabhoomi, the very birthplace of the Lord, the grand Dwarkadhish temple, and the evening Yamuna aarti at Vishram Ghat. In Vrindavan, do not miss the beloved Banke Bihari temple, the marble Prem Mandir with its evening light show, and the continuous kirtan of ISKCON Vrindavan. With the towns so close, you can see the best of both in a day or two.

Best time to make the trip

The cool months of October to March are much the best for both the Mughal monuments and Braj, pleasant for walking Fatehpur Sikri and for the temples alike, while the summer of April to June is fierce. If you travel in the festival season, around Janmashtami, Radhashtami, Diwali or Holi, Braj is joyful but very crowded, so book ahead. See our best time to visit Mathura Vrindavan guide for the seasons in full.

Tips for the journey

  • Take NH 44, the fastest and simplest route to both Mathura and Vrindavan.

  • For Vrindavan, the Yamuna Expressway route is longest in distance but slightly quickest.

  • See Fatehpur Sikri and the Taj first, then cross into Braj, for heritage and pilgrimage in one trip.

  • Give Vrindavan a little more time, as it lies about 14 km beyond Mathura.

  • Come October to March for the most pleasant weather at both the monuments and the temples.

The honest bit

Honest words on the Fatehpur Sikri to Braj journey, from one born in Mathura. This is one of the easiest add-ons in North India: the distance is short, the roads are good, and it turns a Mughal heritage day into a full heritage-and-pilgrimage trip. There is no real difficulty here, only the pleasure of combining Akbar's city with Krishna's land. Distances and times are approximate and shift with traffic, so choose your road by the day; NH 44 is the simplest. If you would like to stay overnight in Braj to take the darshan unhurried, see our Mathura Vrindavan hotels. Plan it as part of your Agra trip and you will carry home both the Taj and the darshan of Krishna.

Why Experience My India is the right choice

I was born in Gokul in the Mathura district, and I welcome travellers crossing from Agra and Fatehpur Sikri into Braj every day. Guiding since 2018, more than 50,000 pilgrims, 4.5 stars on Google, WhatsApp first, 8 AM to 9 PM daily. We meet you at Fatehpur Sikri, Agra, Mathura Junction or Delhi, carry you into Braj and around the temples in the right order, and can fold in the Taj and Fatehpur Sikri themselves, with the stories told on the ground and no touts. One clear fare, and never a charge for free darshan.

Tip from Gurudutt: make the most of how close everything is. See Fatehpur Sikri in the morning, when the Buland Darwaza catches the early light, then drive the short road into Braj and reach Vrindavan in time for the evening aarti and Prem Mandir's lights. In a single day you pass from the grandeur of Akbar's Mughal capital to the sweetness of Krishna's temple town, one of the loveliest contrasts a traveller can find in India.

The Oldest Temples of Mathura and Vrindavan: A Guide to Braj's Ancient Shrines

The oldest temples of Braj fall into two kinds. Mathura's sacred sites are the most ancient of all, the Krishna Janmabhoomi and the guardian Shivas, though their original temples were destroyed and rebuilt over the centuries. Vrindavan's oldest surviving temples are the great ones founded by the Goswamis in the sixteenth century: Radha Damodar and Radha Raman (around 1542), Madan Mohan (around 1580, the oldest temple of Vrindavan) and Govind Dev Ji (around 1590).
