📌 QUICK ANSWER

To visit Agra, Mathura and Vrindavan, plan two to three days and travel the Yamuna Expressway from Delhi. Start with the Braj towns, Vrindavan and Mathura, for Krishna's temples, then drive about an hour to Agra for the Taj Mahal, Agra Fort and Fatehpur Sikri. The easiest way is a private car with a driver or a ready-made tour package; you can also train to Mathura Junction and Agra Cantt. See the Braj temples in the morning and evening around the midday closure and the Taj at sunrise, never on a Friday when it is closed. To plan and book the whole trip, call or WhatsApp +91 7302265809.

Agra, Mathura and Vrindavan make one of India's best short trips, the Taj Mahal paired with the birthplace and playground of Krishna, all along the smooth Yamuna Expressway. But knowing how to actually do it, how many days, how to travel, in what order and how to book, is what turns a good idea into a smooth journey. Here, from one born in Gokul who plans this trip every week, is a clear, step-by-step guide to visiting Agra, Mathura and Vrindavan. Plan your visit with our Mathura Vrindavan tour packages.

Key takeaways

  • Plan two to three days; two is doable, three is comfortable for all three places.

  • Travel the Yamuna Expressway from Delhi; a private car or a tour package is easiest.

  • Do Braj first (Vrindavan and Mathura), then Agra, about an hour beyond Mathura.

  • See the Braj temples morning and evening; see the Taj at sunrise and never on a Friday.

  • You can also come by train to Mathura Junction and Agra Cantt, with a car for the rest.

  • Budget for a car, a hotel, the Taj entry fee and food; temple darshan is free.

I am Gurudutt, born in Gokul in the Mathura district, guiding pilgrims through Braj since 2018, more than 50,000 of them and I arrange this exact trip almost every week. The difference between a smooth journey and a stressful one is simply planning it in the right order and around the right hours. Follow the steps below and you will see all three places without rushing or wasted time.

Step 1: Decide how many days

First, set the length of your trip, because it shapes everything else. Two days is the popular minimum and three days is the comfortable ideal that lets you enjoy each place rather than dash through it.

Days

What you cover

Best for

2 days

Vrindavan and Mathura on day one, Agra on day two

Those short on time; a quick but full trip

3 days (ideal)

A day each for Vrindavan, Mathura with Govardhan and Agra

Most families; an unhurried, complete trip

4 days or more

All the above plus Fatehpur Sikri, Barsana or a slower pace

Devotees and those wanting to savour it

How long to plan. Three days is the sweet spot for all three places.

Step 2: Choose how to travel

Next, decide how you will get around, since the three places are spread across roughly 70 km. There are four common ways and for most travellers a private car or a ready-made package is by far the easiest.

Way

How it works

Best for

Private car with driver

One car for the whole trip, door to door

Families, elders, comfort; the easiest way

Tour package

Car, hotel, guide and plan arranged for you

Those who want it all handled, one price

Train plus car

Train to Mathura Jn and Agra Cantt, car locally

Solo and budget travellers

Self-drive

Your own car on the Yamuna Expressway

Confident drivers who know the roads

Ways to travel the circuit. A private car or a package suits most pilgrims best.

The simplest option is a private, air-conditioned car with a driver who knows the temples, the Taj and the roads between; book one through our Mathura Vrindavan taxi service or let us handle everything with a 2 Days Agra Mathura Vrindavan tour package.

Step 3: Pick your route and order

Now choose the order. Everything is along the Yamuna Expressway from Delhi, so there are two natural routes: Braj first, then Agra; or Agra first, then Braj. I recommend Braj first, so you spend your early days in the gentle rhythm of the temples and end the trip with the Taj at sunrise before driving home from Agra.

  • Recommended: Delhi to Vrindavan and Mathura, then on to Agra, then back to Delhi.

  • Alternative: Delhi to Agra first, then up to Mathura and Vrindavan, then home.

  • Distances: Delhi to Mathura about 150 km; Mathura to Agra about 58 km; Agra to Delhi about 230 km.

  • The whole loop runs on a fast expressway, so driving between stops is easy.

Step 4: Follow the day-by-day plan

With the length, transport and order set, here is the day-by-day plan I recommend, built around the temple hours and the Taj's sunrise.

Day

Plan

Day 1: Vrindavan

Banke Bihari, Nidhivan and ISKCON in the morning; Prem Mandir and the evening aarti

Day 2: Mathura to Agra

Krishna Janmabhoomi and Dwarkadhish in the morning; drive to Agra in the afternoon

Day 3: Agra

Taj Mahal at sunrise, then Agra Fort and Fatehpur Sikri on the way back to Delhi

A three-day plan. For two days, combine Vrindavan and Mathura on day one and Agra on day two.

Step 5: Time it right

Timing makes or breaks the trip. Come in the cool season, plan around the temple hours and respect the Taj's own schedule.

  • Best season: October to March for pleasant weather; avoid the harsh summer of April to June.

  • Temple hours: most Braj temples open roughly 7:30 am to 12 noon and 4:30 to 9 pm, closing midday.

  • The Taj Mahal: best at sunrise and closed every Friday, so never plan Agra for a Friday.

  • Festivals: Janmashtami, Radhashtami, Holi and Diwali are glorious but very crowded; book ahead.

For the seasons in full and the festival dates, see our best time to visit Mathura Vrindavan guide and the Mathura Vrindavan festivals calendar.

Step 6: Book it and budget

Finally, arrange the pieces: a car, a hotel, a guide and your Taj tickets. The simplest path is a package that bundles them, but if you book separately, here is what to budget for. Temple darshan itself is free.

What you pay for

Approx cost

Note

Private car (2 to 3 days)

Ask for an all-inclusive fare

Covers fuel, driver, tolls and parking

Hotel per night

₹1,500 to ₹15,000

Budget to luxury; higher on festival dates

Taj Mahal entry

Fee applies

Higher for foreign visitors; closed Fridays

Temple darshan

Free

No charge; beware touts selling VIP passes

Food

Modest

Pure-vegetarian; peda, kachori, thalis

What to budget for. Costs are approximate and change with season; confirm current rates.

To have it all arranged in one clear price, hotel, car, guide and darshan, see our 4 Days Agra Mathura Vrindavan tour package for a full, unhurried trip or ask us to tailor one to your days.

How to reach the region

Most travellers begin from Delhi, the gateway to the whole circuit. If you are flying in, Delhi airport is the nearest major one, about 150 km from Braj and 230 km from Agra and from there a car carries you down the expressway. By train, reach Mathura Junction for Braj and Agra Cantt for the Taj; both are well connected nationwide. However you arrive, we can meet you at the airport or station and begin the trip from there, so you never lose time finding your way.

Tips for visiting all three

  • Give the trip three days if you can; two is doable but tighter, especially for Agra.

  • Start each Braj day at dawn to beat the crowds and the midday temple closure.

  • Plan Agra for any day but Friday and see the Taj at sunrise.

  • Use one car for the whole circuit; it saves hours and avoids touts.

  • Carry ID for the Taj, small cash for offerings and the bazaar and easy shoes for the temple lanes.

  • Book hotels and cars well ahead for festivals and the peak winter season.

The honest bit

Honest words from one born in Braj. The most common mistake is trying to see all three in one day; it cannot be done well, since Agra alone needs the best part of a day. Give the trip two days at least, three to enjoy it. Distances and times here are approximate and shift with traffic and monument timings and fees change, so confirm the Taj's hours and cost before you go and never plan it for a Friday. Beware touts near the temples and the Taj selling VIP shortcuts; temple darshan is free. If you would rather stay overnight and travel at an easy pace, see our Mathura Vrindavan hotels and let a local hand plan the order so no day is wasted.

Why Experience My India is the right choice

I was born in Gokul in the Mathura district, in the heart of this circuit and I plan the Braj-and-Taj trip for families every week. Guiding since 2018, more than 50,000 pilgrims, 4.5 stars on Google, WhatsApp first, 8 AM to 9 PM daily. We meet you at Delhi airport or the station, give you a car and a driver who knows the temples, the Taj and the roads, take you around in the right order and arrange the darshan, the sunrise and any pooja or seva you wish, with the stories told on the ground and no touts. One clear fare and never a charge for free darshan.

Tip from Gurudutt: plan the trip backwards from the Taj sunrise. Fix your Agra morning first, on any day but Friday, then build the Braj days before it, so the whole journey flows towards that one golden dawn at the Taj. Ending on the sunrise and driving home from Agra is the most beautiful shape a Braj-and-Taj trip can take.
