Jhansi, the historic fort city of Bundelkhand and Mathura, the birthplace of Krishna, sit about 286 km apart, a six-hour drive straight up NH 44 through Gwalior and Agra. For the many devotees of Krishna in Jhansi and Bundelkhand, the journey to his land is a comfortable one and a fine route besides. Here, from one born in Braj, is the complete guide to the Jhansi to Mathura distance, the routes both ways and the best way to travel. Plan your visit with our Mathura Vrindavan tour packages.

Key takeaways

  • Jhansi to Mathura is about 286 to 320 km, roughly 6 hours by road.

  • The fastest route runs straight up NH 44 through Gwalior and Agra.

  • Gwalior and Agra (with the Taj) both sit on the route, natural stops.

  • The train is a comfortable alternative, as Jhansi is a major junction.

  • It is a long half-day's drive, best broken with a stop or done by train.

  • Vrindavan lies only 14 km beyond Mathura, an easy pairing.

I am Gurudutt, born in Gokul in the Mathura district, guiding pilgrims through Braj since 2018, more than 50,000 of them. Many who come to us travel from Jhansi and across Bundelkhand, some pausing at Gwalior or the Taj at Agra on the way. Here is everything you need, told by someone who receives these travellers: the exact distances and routes both ways, the train and other options, the best way to travel and the darshan at the end.

Jhansi to Mathura distance and driving routes

By road, the distance from Jhansi to Mathura is about 286 to 320 km and the drive takes roughly 6 hours, straight up NH 44 through Gwalior and Agra. There are three main ways.

Jhansi to Mathura road routes. Approximate; NH 44 is the shortest and quickest.

The straight NH 44 route is much the best, both shortest and quickest, running up through Gwalior and Agra; the other routes are longer and slower. This is a long half-day drive, so break it with a stop, perhaps at Gwalior for its fort or Agra for the Taj. A car that knows the roads makes it easier; our Mathura Vrindavan taxi service can carry you the whole way.

Mathura to Jhansi distance (the return journey)

The road back, from Mathura to Jhansi, is much the same as NH 44, about 287 km and 6 hours. Note that the Agra-Lucknow and Bundelkhand Expressway route, though far longer at 438 km, reaches in a similar time on the fast expressways. Here are the main routes.

Jhansi to Mathura by train

The train is a comfortable choice, as Jhansi is a major junction on the main Delhi line, with many fast trains. There is no major station in Vrindavan, so you travel to Mathura Junction, the railhead for Braj, in about 4 to 5 hours and drive the last 14 km to Vrindavan. From Mathura, we can meet you.

  • Where to board: trains run from Jhansi Junction towards Mathura Junction.

  • How long it takes: roughly 4 to 5 hours by fast train.

  • The last leg: from Mathura Junction, Vrindavan is about 14 km, around 30 minutes.

  • Book ahead: reserve your Jhansi to Mathura ticket in advance in the tourist season.

Jhansi to Mathura by air

For this distance, flying makes little sense. Jhansi has no major airport; the nearest to Braj is Delhi, about 150 km on the far side and Gwalior, on the route, has only limited flights. A car or the fast train between Jhansi and Braj is far simpler than any flight.

  • Jhansi has no major airport; Gwalior nearby has limited flights.

  • Nearest major airport to Braj: Delhi, about 150 km away.

  • Coming soon: the new Noida International Airport at Jewar will serve the region.

  • For the Jhansi to Mathura journey itself, a car or the train is the answer.

Jhansi to Mathura by bus

Buses run from Jhansi towards Gwalior, Agra and the Delhi side, taking around 7 to 8 hours and are the budget option. But they are slower and less comfortable over this distance, so the fast train or a car is far easier for most travellers.

The best way to travel

The right choice depends on your time and budget. A private car is the most flexible, taking you door to door and letting you pause at Gwalior or the Taj; the fast train to Mathura is quick and good value; and the bus is the cheapest but slowest. The table sets them side by side.

A quick comparison. For Jhansi to Braj, the fast train or a private car is easiest.

Breaking the journey and what to see on the way

This route is rich with places to break the journey. Gwalior, with its magnificent hilltop fort, sits about a third of the way and Agra, with the Taj Mahal, Agra Fort and Fatehpur Sikri, about two-thirds, both natural and rewarding stops. Mathura, the birthplace of Krishna, is the goal and Vrindavan lies just 14 km beyond, so you may take the Krishna Janmabhoomi and drive on to the temple town. From the fort of Jhansi, past Gwalior and the Taj, to Krishna's land, it is a journey through the heart of India.

What to see when you arrive

Once in Braj, the darshans begin. In Mathura, see the Krishna Janmabhoomi and the grand Dwarkadhish temple, with the evening Yamuna aarti at Vishram Ghat. Just 14 km in Vrindavan lie the beloved Banke Bihari, the marble Prem Mandir and the kirtan of ISKCON. After the long journey, an overnight stay lets you take the darshan unhurried; see our Mathura Vrindavan hotels.

The best time to visit

The cool months of October to March are much the best for the journey and for Braj, pleasant on the road, at the Taj and at the temples, while the summer is hot. If you pause at Agra, avoid Fridays, when the Taj is closed. Braj is gloriously alive, though very crowded, during Janmashtami, Holi and Diwali. See our best time to visit Mathura Vrindavan guide and the Mathura Vrindavan festivals calendar.

Tips for the journey

  • Take NH 44, the straight route through Gwalior and Agra; it is the shortest and quickest.

  • Break the drive at Gwalior for its fort or Agra for the Taj, both on the way.

  • The fast train from Jhansi to Mathura (4 to 5 hours) is quick and good value.

  • If you pause at Agra, avoid Fridays, when the Taj is closed and see it at sunrise.

  • See both towns; Vrindavan is only 14 km beyond Mathura.

  • Come October to March for the most pleasant weather.

The honest bit

Honest words on the Jhansi to Mathura journey, from one born in Braj. This is a long half-day drive of about 286 km, straight up NH 44 and one of the more rewarding routes to Braj, with Gwalior and Agra to break it. Take the NH 44 route, which is much the shortest; and note an interesting point, that the Agra-Lucknow and Bundelkhand Expressway line, though far longer at 438 km, reaches in a similar time on the fast roads, so if the NH 44 is heavy with traffic, the expressway is a viable alternative. The fast train from Jhansi is quick too. Distances and times are approximate. Planned well, with a stop at Gwalior or the Taj, Jhansi to Braj is a fine journey.

Why Experience My India is the right choice

I was born in Gokul in the Mathura district and I welcome travellers from Jhansi and across Bundelkhand every week, many pausing at Gwalior or the Taj. Guiding since 2018, more than 50,000 pilgrims, 4.5 stars on Google, WhatsApp first, 8 AM to 9 PM daily. Whether you drive or train in, we meet you at Mathura Junction or your doorstep, carry you around the temples of Mathura and Vrindavan in the right order, add Agra and the Taj as you wish, walk you into the old-town temples cars cannot reach and arrange any seva, with no touts. One clear fare and never a charge for free darshan.

Tip from Gurudutt: make the most of this royal road. From the fort of Jhansi, pause at the mighty fort of Gwalior, then at the Taj at Agra and finally come to rest in the land of Krishna, ending at the Vishram Ghat aarti in Mathura, on the very spot where the Lord himself rested. Or take the fast train and let us meet you at Mathura, fresh for the darshan. Either way, from Bundelkhand to Braj, the journey itself is part of the pilgrimage.
