The route, step by step
The drive is straightforward on good highways. Leave Mathura on the Mathura-Bharatpur Road and cross into Rajasthan, then merge onto NH 21, which runs smoothly through Mahwa and Dausa toward Jaipur. Here is the one insider tip that saves the most time: do not drive into Jaipur city or you will lose an hour or more in local traffic; instead take the designated Jaipur bypass, which connects you to NH 52. Follow NH 52 up to the Ringas exit, then take the state highway straight down into Khatu. Keep your FASTag recharged, as there are several toll plazas on the way.
Mathura to Khatu Shyam by train and bus
If you would rather not drive, the train is a good option. There is no station at Khatu itself, so you travel from Mathura Junction to Ringas Junction, the nearest railhead, about 17 km from Khatu, on a train that runs via Bharatpur and Jaipur, taking around seven hours; from Ringas, shared jeeps and taxis run to the temple. Buses also connect the two via Jaipur, but there is no direct service and with transfers the journey can take around nine hours, so for a group or family the car remains the easiest and most comfortable choice.
Who is Khatu Shyam Ji?
The story of Khatu Shyam is one of the most moving in all of Hindu tradition. He was Barbarika, the grandson of the mighty Bhima and son of Ghatotkacha, a warrior so powerful that he could have ended the entire Mahabharata war in moments with his three infallible arrows. Before the war, Krishna, testing him and knowing his power would upset the balance, asked Barbarika for charity and the young warrior offered anything; Krishna asked for his head. Without hesitation, Barbarika gave it, asking only to watch the great war to its end. Moved beyond measure by such supreme sacrifice, Krishna granted him a boon: that in the age of Kali, Barbarika would be worshipped by Krishna's own name, Shyam and that he would be the refuge of the humble and the defeated, the Haare ka Sahara. His head, it is said, was later found buried at Khatu and the temple rose over it.
The Khatu Shyam temple: darshan, timings and the mela
The temple of Khatu Shyam Ji stands in the village of Khatu, in the Sikar district of Rajasthan and draws millions of devotees a year, who come crying Haare ka Sahara, Khatu Shyam Hamara. Near the temple is the sacred Shyam Kund, the pond where the head is said to have been found, whose waters are held to heal. The temple generally opens for darshan in the morning and again in the evening, with the hours longer in summer and during festivals, so it is best to reconfirm before you go. The greatest event of the year is the Falgun Mela, the huge fair held in the month of Phalguna, around February or March, when Khatu overflows with lakhs of pilgrims and the darshan lines are very long; it is glorious but demanding, so plan carefully if you go then.
Combining Mathura and Khatu Shyam
Because Khatu Shyam is worshiped as Krishna himself, a trip that joins Mathura with Khatu is a beautiful circle of the same Lord in two forms. Many pilgrims first take darshan in Braj, at the Krishna Janmabhoomi, the Dwarkadhish temple and Vishram Ghat in Mathura and the Banke Bihari temple in Vrindavan, then drive on to Khatu for Shyam Baba's darshan. It makes a rich two or three-day pilgrimage; our guide on how to plan a Mathura and Vrindavan trip and our places to visit in Mathura Vrindavan help you shape it.
Best time to travel
The cool months of October to March are much the best for the drive and for Khatu, as Rajasthan's summers are fierce, with temperatures soaring in April to June. Winter is also the season of the great Falgun Mela. If you are timing a Braj visit too, the same cool months suit both; see our best time to visit Mathura Vrindavan guide for the seasons and festivals in full.
Tips for the drive
Start early from Mathura to reach Khatu with time for darshan and the drive back or on.
Take the Jaipur bypass; do not enter the city.
Keep your FASTag recharged for the toll plazas.
Carry water and plan a meal stop around Dausa or Jaipur.
During the Falgun Mela, expect very long lines and heavy traffic; plan extra time.
The honest bit
Honest words on the Mathura to Khatu Shyam drive, from one born in Braj. It is a full day's journey each way, around 300 to 320 km, so if you can, stay a night rather than trying to go and return in a single day; the darshan deserves an unhurried heart. The distances and temple timings here are approximate and change with traffic and season, above all during the Falgun Mela, when crowds are enormous, so reconfirm before you travel. Darshan is free and no genuine VIP pass is sold on the roadside, so beware touts near the temple. For a stay in Braj before or after, see our Mathura Vrindavan hotels and our guide on where to stay in Vrindavan. Travel steadily and Shyam Baba, the refuge of the humble, blesses the journey.

Tip from Gurudutt: make it a proper little pilgrimage rather than a dash. Take Krishna's darshan in Mathura and Vrindavan first, set off early the next morning and reach Khatu by afternoon for a calmer darshan, staying the night if you can. Bathe your eyes on the Shyam Kund, cry out Haare ka Sahara with the crowds and feel how the Lord of Braj and the Shyam of Khatu are truly one. Come outside the Falgun Mela if you prefer a quieter darshan. It is a journey that stays in the heart.
