Mathura to Vrindavan distance and driving routes

The first leg, from Mathura to Vrindavan, is short and easy, about 12 to 16 km and around 30 minutes by road. The main route runs along NH 44. There are three ways.

Vrindavan to Gokul distance and driving routes

The second leg, from Vrindavan to Gokul, is longer, about 27 to 34 km and around 55 minutes, because Gokul lies southeast of Mathura, across the Yamuna, so you travel back down past Mathura and over the river. Here are the three routes.

Getting between the three towns by train and local transport

For hops as short as these, there is no need for a train; a car is far simpler, and the whole circuit is best driven. If you are arriving in Braj by rail, Mathura Junction is the main railhead, and from there we can begin the circuit. Within the three towns, local transport such as autos and e-rickshaws runs, but it is patchy and slow for a full-day circuit.

Reaching Braj by air

There is no sense in flying for a circuit this small. If you are arriving in the region from afar, the nearest major airport is Delhi, about 150 km from Braj, from where you drive about 3 to 3.5 hours to Mathura and begin the three-town circuit.

Mathura, Vrindavan and Gokul by bus and auto

Local and state buses, along with shared autos and e-rickshaws, connect the three towns cheaply, and pilgrims on a tight budget do use them. But they are slow and indirect for a full-day circuit taking in all three towns and their temples, so a private car is far more comfortable and saves hours over the loop.

The best way to travel

For this short, sacred circuit, the choice is simple: a private car is by far the best way, letting you move freely between the three towns and their temples at your own pace, in a single unhurried day. Autos and buses are the budget alternative but slow and piecemeal. The table sets them side by side.

These distances are so short that no break is needed along the way; the whole joy is the three towns themselves. What to see when you arrive

In each town, the darshans await. In Mathura, see the grand Dwarkadhish temple and the evening Yamuna aarti at Vishram Ghat. In Vrindavan, do not miss the marble Prem Mandir and the kirtan of ISKCON. And in the Gokul area, see the soft sands of Raman Reti where Krishna played, the wonderful Brahmand Ghat where Yashoda saw the universe in his mouth, and the ancient Chaurasi Khamba at Mahavan.

The best time to visit

The cool months of October to March are much the best for the circuit, pleasant for the temples, the ghats and the walking, while the summer is fierce. The three towns are at their most alive, though very crowded, during the great festivals of Janmashtami, Holi and Kartik, when Gokul in particular keeps a beautiful Nandotsav after Janmashtami.
