I am Gurudutt, born in Gokul in the Mathura district, guiding pilgrims through Braj since 2018, more than 50,000 of them, and helping many extend their Braj darshan onward to Ayodhya and Kashi. This circuit is close to my heart, for it begins on my own soil and carries the pilgrim across the whole sacred landscape of the north. Everything below is how I would plan it for my own family. Mathura and Vrindavan: the land of Krishna

The circuit begins in Braj. Mathura, on the Yamuna, is where Krishna was born, and its heart is the Krishna Janmabhoomi, with the grand Dwarkadhish temple and the evening Yamuna aarti at Vishram Ghat nearby. A short way on lies Vrindavan, the town of his childhood, dense with temples: the beloved Banke Bihari, the marble Prem Mandir, the kirtan of ISKCON, and the mystery of Nidhivan. Give Braj two days to begin the pilgrimage well.

Ayodhya: the birthplace of Ram

From Braj the pilgrim travels east to Ayodhya, on the banks of the Saryu, the birthplace of Lord Ram and one of the holiest cities in India. Its glory today is the magnificent new Ram Mandir, consecrated in January 2024, built at Ram Janmabhoomi, the very site of his birth, drawing millions of devotees. Around it lie the ancient Hanuman Garhi, the temple of Hanuman set on a small hill; Kanak Bhawan, the golden palace of Sita and Ram; and Ram ki Paidi, the great flight of ghats along the Saryu where the evening aarti is beautiful. Ayodhya now has its own airport, and deserves a full day of darshan.

Kashi (Varanasi): the eternal city of Shiva

The circuit reaches its climax in Kashi, or Varanasi, the oldest living city in the world and the holiest of Shiva's abodes. Its heart is the Kashi Vishwanath temple, one of the twelve Jyotirlingas, now set within the grand Vishwanath Dham corridor that opens to the Ganga. As evening falls, the great Ganga aarti at Dashashwamedh Ghat, with its towering lamps and chanting, is one of the most moving sights in all of India. At dawn, a boat ride along the ghats, past Manikarnika and the timeless riverfront, is unforgettable. Nearby lies Sarnath, where the Buddha gave his first sermon. Give Kashi a full day and an evening.

Distances and how to travel the circuit

This is a long circuit across the width of Uttar Pradesh, so the distances are real and the travel is part of the journey. These are the approximate distances and times.

Because the legs are long, most pilgrims use a mix: a private car within Braj and each city, and overnight trains or flights for the long stretches, especially Mathura to Ayodhya and the return from Varanasi. Ayodhya and Varanasi both now have airports, and Varanasi is a major rail hub. A Mathura Vrindavan taxi with a driver who knows the region can carry you through Braj and beyond, or meet you at each city.

The ideal itinerary

Here is the six-day plan I recommend, moving west to east so the journey flows naturally from Krishna to Ram to Shiva. Add a day for a gentler pace or to include Agra's Taj at the start.

The best time to make the pilgrimage

The cool months of October to March are much the best for the whole circuit, pleasant across Braj, Ayodhya and Varanasi alike; the summer of April to June is fierce over such distances. The festivals add their own glory, Janmashtami and Holi in Braj, Ram Navami and Diwali in Ayodhya, and Dev Deepawali and Mahashivratri in Kashi, but bring huge crowds, so book well ahead. Tips for the circuit

• Travel west to east, Braj to Ayodhya to Kashi, so the route and the story flow naturally.

• Use overnight trains for the long legs, especially Mathura to Ayodhya, to save daytime.

• Give each city its due: two days for Braj, a day each for Ayodhya and Kashi at least.

• Confirm the Ram Mandir and Kashi Vishwanath darshan timings, as crowds and rules change.

• Book trains, flights and hotels well ahead, especially in festival season.

• Carry ID everywhere, dress modestly for the temples, and travel light through the crowds.

The honest bit

Honest words from one born in Braj. This is a long and deeply rewarding pilgrimage, but be realistic about the distances: it spans the width of Uttar Pradesh, so it cannot be rushed into two or three days. Give it six or seven, and use overnight trains for the long legs so you arrive rested. Distances and times here are approximate and shift with traffic and the road; darshan timings at the Ram Mandir and Kashi Vishwanath change with crowds and season, so confirm before you go. Beware touts at the great temples selling paid priority; take darshan the honest, patient way.
