📌 QUICK ANSWER
Nand Ghat is a sacred bank of the Yamuna near Gokul, in the Bhaigaon neighbourhood of Mathura district. By the Srimad Bhagavatam, this is where Nand Baba, Krishna's foster father, was captured by the servants of Varuna Deva after bathing at a forbidden hour and where the child Krishna dived into the river, reached Varuna's palace and brought his father safely home. The adjacent village is called Bhaigaon, from bhaya (fear), after the villagers' panic. An ancient temple overlooks the ghat's stone steps and it forms part of the Gokul riverside trail with Brahmand Ghat and Thakurani Ghat. I was born in Gokul and Nand Ghat is one of the stories I grew up with. It is a quiet, ancient bank of the Yamuna near the village of Bhaigaon and it marks one of the most tender of all the Krishna pastimes: the night his foster father Nand Baba was carried off into the water kingdom of Varuna and the child Krishna dived into the Yamuna to bring him home. Most visitors to Gokul never find this ghat, which is a pity, because the legend here is one that the Srimad Bhagavatam itself records. Plan your visit with our Mathura Vrindavan tour packages.

A Word From Your Guide
I am Gurudutt, born in Gokul and guiding pilgrims through Braj since 2018, more than fifty thousand of them over the years. Gokul is my own home ground and its ghats are places I have known since childhood. Nand Ghat is one I almost always have to point out myself, because the standard Gokul visit stops at Nand Bhavan and Raman Reti and misses the river. In this guide I will tell you the full legend of the ghat as the Bhagavatam gives it, how Bhaigaon got its name, what the ancient temple holds, exactly where the ghat sits and how to reach it and how to walk the Gokul riverside trail properly. Everything here is from the scripture and the oral history of my own Brajwasi people.

The Legend of Nand Ghat: How Krishna Rescued Nand Baba from Varuna
The story of Nand Ghat is one of the clearest examples in all the scriptures of the child Krishna acting as the Supreme Lord to protect his own. It unfolds in three movements.
The capture. One night, Nand Baba went down to the Yamuna to take a ritual bath. He entered the water during the early, forbidden hours of the night, an inauspicious time for bathing. For this transgression the servants of Varuna Deva, the god of the waters and the oceans, seized him and carried him down to their celestial water kingdom, Varunapuri.
The fear. When Nand Baba did not return, the whole village fell into panic and fear for the beloved chief who had vanished into the river. It is from this bhaya, this fear, that the adjacent village took its name, Bhaigaon, a name it carries to this day.
The rescue. Learning what had happened, the young Krishna went straight to the water. He dived into the Yamuna, reached Varuna's palace in the depths and presented himself. Varuna Deva, realising with horror that his servants had seized the very father of the Supreme Lord, at once worshipped Krishna, apologised and returned Nand Baba to his son with grand gifts and honours. Because Nand Baba was taken from this exact bank and safely returned to it, the ghat has been known ever since as Nand Ghat.
The Ancient Temple at Nand Ghat
Overlooking the stone steps of the ghat stands a centuries-old temple dedicated to this very event, housing ancient deities of Lord Krishna and his family, Nand Baba and Yashoda among them. It is a modest, old shrine rather than a grand complex and that is its charm: you take darshan where the story itself is said to have happened, with the Yamuna flowing just below the steps. For devotees who grew up on the Bhagavatam, standing here, where a child dived into the river to save his father, is deeply moving. If you wish to have a puja or an offering made at the ghat in your family's name, our pooja services can arrange it with the local priests.
Nand Ghat and the Gokul Riverside Trail
Nand Ghat is not a lone stop; it is one bead on the holy riverside string of Gokul, the village where Krishna spent his infancy in the care of Nand and Yashoda. The Yamuna here has gathered pastimes at every bend and the ghats are best visited together.
Brahmand Ghat: where the child Krishna, accused of eating mud, opened his mouth and showed Yashoda the entire universe (brahmand) within it.
Thakurani Ghat: another revered bank on the same Gokul riverside trail, part of the traditional circuit.
Chaurasi Khamba, Mahavan: the ancient 84-pillared hall of Nand Baba's palace, the heart of old Gokul (Mahavan).
Raman Reti: the soft sacred sands where Krishna and Balarama crawled and played as children.
Together these make a half-day of the real Gokul, the Braj of Krishna's babyhood, quite different in feeling from the temple city of Vrindavan or the ghats of Vishram Ghat in Mathura.
Location and How to Reach Nand Ghat
Nand Ghat lies near Gokul, in the Bhaigaon neighbourhood, on the eastern bank of the Yamuna in Mathura district. Gokul sits about 15 km southeast of Mathura city and the ghat is a short further hop toward the river.
From Mathura: about 15 km, roughly 30 to 40 minutes by road to Gokul, then a short drive or walk to the ghat.
From Vrindavan: about 25 to 27 km; allow an hour by car.
From Gokul town / Nand Bhavan: a short hop toward Bhaigaon and the riverbank.
On foot: the Gokul ghats are best walked together along the riverside; ask locally for Nand Ghat or Bhaigaon.
The lanes around Gokul and Bhaigaon are narrow, so the practical way is to drive to Gokul and walk the riverside stretch. Our Mathura Vrindavan taxi drivers know the Gokul ghats and the right place to park and walk in.
Combine Your Visit: A Gokul and Mahavan Riverside Day
Nand Ghat is best folded into a half-day of Gokul and Mahavan, the land of Krishna's infancy. A gentle sequence might run:
Order | Place | Why it fits |
1 | Chaurasi Khamba, Mahavan | Nand Baba's ancient 84-pillar palace, the heart of old Gokul |
2 | Nand Bhavan / Gokulnath | The homes and temples of Nand and Yashoda in Gokul town |
3 | Nand Ghat | The riverbank of the Varuna rescue, with its ancient temple |
4 | Brahmand Ghat | Where Yashoda saw the universe in the child's mouth |
5 | The nearby forest shrine of the Lohasura pastime | |
6 | End at the great temple of Balarama, Krishna's elder brother |
A representative half-day; the Gokul ghats are humble and best seen with someone who knows the stories.
Best Time to Visit Nand Ghat
The ghat is open to pilgrims through the day, but Gokul is loveliest in the cool months and most alive at its festivals, when the whole of Krishna's childhood village celebrates.
Dawn and early morning: the most peaceful time at the river, before the day warms.
October to March: the best season; pleasant weather for walking the riverside and the Gokul lanes.
Janmashtami and Nandotsav: Gokul celebrates Krishna's birth with great fervour (Gokulashtami), the most festive time to come.
Kartik month (Oct to Nov): deeply sacred along the whole Yamuna, with lamps and bathing.

Practical Tips for Visiting Nand Ghat
Walk the ghats together; do Nand Ghat, Brahmand Ghat and the Gokul shrines as one riverside circuit, not separate trips.
Come early; mornings at the river are cool, quiet and the most beautiful for darshan and photographs.
Take a local guide; the Gokul ghats are humble and unsignposted and the stories are the whole reason to come.
Mind the steps and the monkeys; the old ghat steps can be slippery and monkeys are quick near the river.
Do not bathe carelessly in the Yamuna; take guidance on where it is safe and treat the water as sacred.
Carry small notes for an offering at the ghat temple, given willingly to the priests.
The Honest Bit
Let me be plain: Nand Ghat is not a grand, polished monument. It is an old, humble riverbank with an ancient little temple and if you arrive without knowing the Varuna legend you may wonder why you came. Its whole power is in the story, so go knowing it. Gokul as a whole is the quiet, rustic Braj of Krishna's babyhood, not the bustling temple-tourism of Vrindavan and some visitors expecting the latter are surprised. The ghats are humble and the lanes are narrow and unsignposted, so a local who can walk you to the right spot and tell the story at each one makes all the difference. The Yamuna here is not always clean, so honour the river rather than plunging into it. Why Experience My India Is the Right Choice
I am Gurudutt, born in Gokul, guiding pilgrims through Braj since 2018, more than fifty thousand of them by now. Gokul is my own home and its ghats are places I have known all my life: I know which bank is Nand Ghat, the Bhagavatam story at each one, the right hour to come, where the car can go and where you must walk and how to arrange a proper darshan or puja with the ghat's own priests instead of being hurried by touts. We are a Ministry of Tourism certified operator with a fleet of more than fifty vehicles, we meet you at the station or airport, we keep one clear fare with no surprises and we never charge for darshan that is free. We are rated 4.5 stars and we answer on WhatsApp from 8 AM to 9 PM.
Tip from Gurudutt: Come to Nand Ghat at first light, before the rest of Gokul wakes. Sit a few minutes on the old steps and remember the story: a father taken by the river in the dark, a whole village sick with fear and a small boy who walked into the Yamuna to bring his father home. For those of us born in Gokul it is not a legend but family history. Then walk on to Brahmand Ghat with the morning still cool. That quiet hour on the Gokul riverside is the Braj that the big tours never show you. |
