About Gokul, the land of Krishna’s infancy

Gokul is a small and ancient holy town on the eastern bank of the Yamuna, about fifteen kilometres downstream from Mathura and it is one of the most sacred places in all of Braj, for it is here and in the neighbouring Mahavan, that the child Krishna was raised. When Krishna was born in the prison of the tyrant Kansa at Mathura, his father Vasudeva carried the newborn across the Yamuna that same night to Gokul, to the home of the cowherd chief Nanda and his wife Yashoda, who raised him as their own; and so Gokul is the land of the Lord’s infancy, of the sweetest and most tender of all his leelas, his childhood plays. Here he stole the butter and was tied to the mortar, here Yashoda saw the whole universe in his little mouth, here he played on the silver sands and among the cows. 1. Shri Nand Yashoda Bhawan

The heart of Gokul is the Shri Nand Yashoda Bhawan, the home of Nanda and Yashoda, the very house where the child Krishna was raised, the tenderest of all the places of Gokul. Here the foster parents of the Lord loved and reared him, here the sweet domestic leelas of his infancy were played and the temple that marks the home is dear above all to those who love the vatsalya bhava, the tender parental love of Krishna as a child. 2. Chaurasi Khamba, Mahavan

In the neighbouring Mahavan stands the Chaurasi Khamba, the hall of eighty four pillars, the ancient palace of Nanda Maharaj, the oldest and most storied monument of the Gokul country. This great old pillared hall, of much antiquity, is revered as the house of Nanda where Krishna spent much of his early childhood and near it are the sites of the childhood leelas, including the Utkhal, the mortar to which the mother Yashoda tied the butter thief child as a punishment, the famous Damodar leela. It is a place of deep history and tender memory and one of the chief sights of Mahavan.

3. Raman Reti

Raman Reti, the sacred silver sands, is among the most beloved and peaceful places of Gokul. The name means the sands of playing or delight, for these are the soft sands where the child Krishna and his little cowherd friends ran and played and rolled in the joy of his infancy; the sand is held so sacred that pilgrims roll upon it and carry it away and it is said to be cool and soft underfoot even in the heat. 4. Brahmand Ghat

The Brahmand Ghat, on the Yamuna, is the site of one of the most wonderful of all the childhood leelas, for here, it is told, when the little Krishna had eaten mud and the mother Yashoda opened his mouth to scold him, she beheld within it the whole universe, the brahmand, all the worlds and stars and even herself and knew for a moment that her child was the Lord of all. 5. Thakurani Ghat

The Thakurani Ghat, also called the Gokul Ghat, is a sacred bathing ghat on the Yamuna at Gokul, revered especially in the Vallabh sampradaya, the Pushtimarg, for it is held that here the great teacher Shri Vallabhacharya had his divine revelation, in which the Lord Shrinathji commanded him to begin the path of grace. It is a holy and historic ghat, dear to the followers of Vallabhacharya, of whom Gokul is a great centre and a peaceful place to sit by the sacred river. 6. Gokulnath temple

The Gokulnath temple is the chief and most revered temple of Gokul town, the great seat of the Vallabh sampradaya, the Pushtimarg founded by Shri Vallabhacharya, of which Gokul is a principal centre. Here the Lord is worshipped as Gokulnath, the lord of Gokul, in the tender loving service, the seva, of the Pushtimarg and the temple is the devotional heart of the town, thronged especially at the festivals of Krishna’s childhood. It is a place every visitor to Gokul should see, for the living devotion of the Vallabh tradition that fills the town.

7. Chinta Haran Mahadev and Mahavan

At Mahavan stands the Chinta Haran Mahadev, a temple of Shiva as the remover of worry, the chinta, one of the guardian Shivas of the Braj country, revered by the pilgrims who come to Gokul and Mahavan. Mahavan, whose name means the great forest, is the ancient wooded land beside Gokul, older even than Gokul town and holds the Chaurasi Khamba and other sites of the earliest infancy of Krishna. How to reach Gokul

Gokul lies about fifteen kilometres from Mathura, across the Yamuna to the southeast, an easy drive of about thirty five to forty minutes by the Agra road and this is the natural way to reach it, by car from Mathura or Vrindavan. Mathura, the nearest railway junction, is well connected across the country, about an hour from Agra and three to four hours from Delhi by the Yamuna Expressway; the nearest airport is Agra, about sixty kilometres or Delhi, about a hundred and fifty. From Mathura, a private car takes you to Gokul and around its holy places and on to Mahavan at your own pace, which buses cannot do. The table gives the distances.

How long to spend and a suggested plan

Gokul and Mahavan can be seen in a half day to a full day, depending on how deeply you wish to linger. A good plan is to drive from Mathura in the morning, beginning at the Shri Nand Yashoda Bhawan, the home of Krishna, then the Gokulnath temple and the Thakurani Ghat in the town, then across to the Brahmand Ghat and on to Mahavan for the Chaurasi Khamba and the Chinta Haran Mahadev and to the peaceful Raman Reti for the sacred sands and the deer, before returning by the afternoon or evening. When to visit Gokul

The cool months of October to March are much the best for a visit to Gokul, pleasant for the town and the ghats and the sands. The supreme time, as befits the land of Krishna’s infancy, is Janmashtami, the birthday of the Lord and the days around it, when Gokul is at its most joyful and thronged, celebrating the childhood of Krishna with special beauty; the Annakut and the festivals of the Vallabh tradition are great here too. Gokul is a place of gentle rural sanctity and tender devotion, the home of the child Krishna, rather than a town of grand monuments or spectacle, so come to it in a peaceful and unhurried spirit and it will give you a sweetness the great temple towns cannot. Its lanes are old and narrow, best walked or taken by cycle rickshaw, so a car is best left at the edge with a local to guide you through.
