📌 QUICK ANSWER
The Putana Uddhar Sthali (also Putana Vadh Sthali or Putana Moksha Sthali) in Mahavan, Old Gokul, marks the spot where the six-day-old Krishna performed his very first leela, slaying the demoness Putana and granting her moksha (liberation). By the Srimad Bhagavatam, King Kansa sent Putana to kill newborns; disguised as a beautiful mother, she entered Nand Bhavan and tried to poison the infant Krishna with poison smeared on her breast. Krishna sucked out her life force instead, but because she had come as a mother and fed him, he cleansed her of all sin and raised her soul to the spiritual world. The site is inside the Chaurasi Khamba (Nand Bhavan) temple at Mahavan, across the Yamuna from Mathura. To visit it with a local guide, call or WhatsApp +91 7302265809.
The very first thing the Lord did in this world, when he was just six days old, was turn an attempt on his life into an act of liberation. The Putana Uddhar Sthali in Mahavan marks the exact spot where a demoness came to murder the infant Krishna and left instead as a freed soul, carried to the supreme abode. It is one of the most profound sites in all of Braj, hidden inside the ancient Nand Bhavan and it teaches the deepest lesson of the whole Krishna story: the boundless mercy of God, even toward one who came to kill him. A Word From Your Guide
I am Gurudutt, born in Gokul and guiding pilgrims through Braj since 2018, more than fifty thousand of them over the years. The Putana Uddhar Sthali is part of the old heart of my own Gokul, inside the ancient Nand Bhavan and it is a spot I always explain with care, because its lesson is the greatest of all: the Lord's mercy is so vast that even an assassin who merely played at being his mother was given liberation. In this guide I will tell you the full story as the Bhagavatam gives it, the deep meaning of Putana's moksha, her previous birth, the famous fragrance of her cremation and exactly where the site is and how to reach it. Everything here is from the scripture and the living tradition of my land.
The Legend of Putana: The Demoness Sent to Kill Krishna
By the Srimad Bhagavatam, when King Kansa learned that the child destined to kill him had been born, he sent his demons out across the region to murder every newborn. Among the most terrible was Putana, a venomous demoness with the mystical power to change her shape. Disguising herself as a beautiful, celestial-seeming mother, she slipped into the Nand Bhavan, the mansion of Nand Baba in Mahavan, while Mother Yashoda and Rohini were preoccupied.
Putana smeared a deadly poison, the Kalakoot, upon her breast, lifted the infant Krishna from his cradle and began to nurse him, meaning to kill him as he fed. But the all-knowing Lord closed his eyes and began to suckle and instead of taking the poison, he drew out her very life force, her prana, along with it. Putana shrieked in agony, crying Muncha! Muncha!Let me go! Let me go! and collapsed, reverting as she died to her gigantic, monstrous demonic form, so vast that her fallen body crushed the trees around. This was the first of all Krishna's pastimes, performed in the same Nand Bhavan compound as the Yamalarjun trees, now the Chaurasi Khamba, Mahavan.
The Meaning: How a Killer Received Liberation
Here is where the story turns from horror to the sublime and why the site is called Uddhar, deliverance and not merely Vadh, slaying. Putana came with the pure intent to murder. And yet she took the role of a mother and she gave the Lord her milk. Krishna, in his boundless compassion, accepted that single maternal act over her murderous intent. Because she had fed him as a mother would, he received her as a mother, cleansed her of the sins of countless lifetimes and elevated her soul to the supreme spiritual abode.
This is the lesson that makes the site so sacred: that the mercy of God is so vast it can find the one thread of devotion, however impure the motive and pull a soul to liberation by it. If even Putana, who came to kill, was freed because she played at mothering him, what hope is there not for the sincere devotee? It is the same infinite compassion felt all through Gokul, the land of Krishna's infancy.
Putana's Previous Birth: Ratnamala and the Vamana Avatar
The tradition gives Putana a tender back-story that explains the whole mystery. In a previous life, in the Satya Yuga, she was Ratnamala, the daughter of the great King Bali. When she beheld the beautiful dwarf-form of Lord Vishnu, the Vamana avatar, she was filled with such motherly love that she longed to have him as her own son and to nurse him at her breast.
But when Vamana later bound her father Bali, her sweet feelings curdled into bitterness and in her anger she thought that if she ever did nurse that Lord, she would poison him. Both of these wishes, the loving and the bitter, were held in her heart and the Lord, who forgets nothing, fulfilled them both in a single childhood pastime: Putana did nurse him, with poison and in return he gave her the son's love and the liberation she had once longed for. It is a perfect, merciful completion of a desire across ages.
The Fragrance of the Soul
There is one more detail the people of Braj cherish. When the residents of the village cut up and cremated Putana's gigantic body, they braced themselves for the foul stench of a demon's corpse. Instead, a beautiful, divine fragrance, a surabhi, rose from the smoke and spread across the land. Her body, poisoned and monstrous though it had been, had been purified utterly by the mere touch of Krishna's lips and hands. Even her ashes were sweet. It is the tradition's way of saying that nothing the Lord touches, however fallen, remains impure.
The Putana Uddhar Sthali: What to See and Where It Is
The exact place where this first pastime unfolded is preserved and worshipped inside the ancient Nand Bhavan temple complex at Mahavan, within the famous 84-pillar hall. When you visit, the local priests and guides will point out the specific historical room and spot where Putana lifted Krishna from his cradle and met her liberation.
Inside Chaurasi Khamba (Nand Bhavan): the Putana Uddhar Sthali is enshrined within the old 84-pillar palace hall of Nand Baba.
The cradle spot: the priests mark the place of the cradle from which the infant Krishna was lifted.
Across the Yamuna from Mathura: the site lies in Mahavan, on the opposite bank of the river from the main city.
It is a humble, deeply atmospheric old shrine rather than a grand complex and to have a puja offered here in your family's name, our pooja services can arrange it with the local priests.
Location and How to Reach the Putana Uddhar Sthali
The site is inside the Chaurasi Khamba (Nand Bhavan) temple at Mahavan, the Old Gokul, on the eastern bank of the Yamuna, across the river from the main Mathura city. Kansa, who sent Putana, is remembered at his old fort, Kans Qila, by the river in Mathura and Krishna's own birthplace at Krishna Janmabhoomi is where the whole story began.
From Mathura: about 15 km southeast to Mahavan; roughly 30 to 40 minutes by road.
From Gokul town: a very short hop, within the Mahavan and Gokul area.
From Vrindavan: about 25 to 27 km; allow around an hour by car.
At Mahavan: the site is inside the Chaurasi Khamba temple; the priests will show you the exact spot.
Mahavan and Gokul are rustic old Braj with narrow lanes, so the easy way is to drive to Gokul and walk the compound. Our Mathura Vrindavan taxi drivers know the Gokul and Mahavan sites well.
Combine Your Visit: A Gokul and Mahavan Day
The Putana Uddhar Sthali is best seen as part of a Gokul and Mahavan day, the Braj of Krishna's infancy. A gentle sequence might run:
Order | Place | Why it fits |
1 | Chaurasi Khamba (Putana & Yamalarjun sites) | Nand Baba's palace and Krishna's first pastimes, together |
2 | The soft sacred sands where Krishna and Balarama played
3 | The nearby forest shrine of the Lohasura pastime
4 | The great temple of Balarama, Krishna's elder brother
5 | End at the Yamuna in Mathura for the evening aarti |
A representative day of Krishna's infancy; the Gokul and Mahavan sites are humble and best seen with a guide.
Best Time to Visit the Putana Uddhar Sthali
The site is open to pilgrims through the day, but Gokul is lovely in the cool months and most meaningful at the festivals of Krishna's childhood.
October to March: the best season; pleasant weather for the Gokul and Mahavan lanes.
Janmashtami and Nandotsav (Aug to Sep): the whole of Gokul celebrates Krishna's birth and infancy, the very days of this pastime.
Kartik month (Oct to Nov): deeply sacred across the land of Krishna's childhood.
Mornings: the calmest time in the old village lanes.

Practical Tips for Your Visit
See it with the Yamalarjun site; both of Krishna's first pastimes are inside the same Chaurasi Khamba compound.
Ask the priest for the exact spot; the cradle place and Putana's room are pointed out within the temple.
Take a local guide; the Mahavan sites are humble and unsignposted and the Putana story is the reason to come.
Come in the morning for the quietest atmosphere in the old lanes.
Dress modestly and tread gently at this ancient, sacred spot.
Visit at Janmashtami if you can, when all of Gokul relives Krishna's infancy.
The Honest Bit
Let me be honest: the Putana Uddhar Sthali is a humble, old shrine inside the Chaurasi Khamba at Mahavan, not a grand temple with facilities. Its power is entirely in the story and in standing where Krishna's first pastime is said to have happened, so go knowing the leela and the simple spot becomes overwhelming. Gokul and Mahavan are the quiet, rural Braj of Krishna's babyhood, with narrow unsignposted lanes, quite unlike the bustle of Vrindavan and some visitors expecting a big monument are surprised. The story itself is fierce, a poisoning and a slaying, but remember that the tradition frames it entirely as mercy and liberation, not horror. A local who can walk you to the exact spot and tell it rightly makes all the difference. If you would like a comfortable base from which to explore Gokul and Mahavan unhurried, our list of Mathura and Vrindavan hotels will help you choose.
Why Experience My India Is the Right Choice
I am Gurudutt, born in Gokul, guiding pilgrims through Braj since 2018, more than fifty thousand of them by now. The old sites of Gokul and Mahavan are my own home ground and they are exactly where a local guide brings the stories to life: we know the Chaurasi Khamba compound, the Putana spot and the Yamalarjun site within it, the way the Bhagavatam tells the pastime and the right order to see the sites of Krishna's infancy. We are a Ministry of Tourism certified operator with a fleet of more than fifty vehicles, we meet you at the station or airport, we keep one clear fare with no surprises and we never charge for darshan that is free. We are rated 4.5 stars and we answer on WhatsApp from 8 AM to 9 PM.
Tip from Gurudutt: Stand quietly at the Putana Uddhar Sthali and let the real meaning reach you. A woman came to this room to murder a baby and she left it a liberated soul, carried to the feet of God, because for one moment she held him and fed him like a mother. That is the whole promise of Braj in a single spot: there is no one so fallen that the Lord's mercy cannot find a thread of love in them and pull them home. Of all the places I show pilgrims in my own Gokul, this is the one that most often brings them to tears. |
