📌 QUICK ANSWER
The Radha Krishna love story is the eternal, divine love of Radha, the daughter of King Vrishabhanu of Barsana and Krishna, the cowherd god of Vrindavan. They met and loved each other as children in Braj, their love finding its height in the Raas, the divine dance. Krishna later left Braj for Mathura and never returned to live there, so they never married in the worldly sense; yet their love is worshipped as eternal and supreme, the model of pure devotion, for Radha is Krishna's own bliss-energy and the two are one. I am Gurudutt, born in Gokul in the Mathura district, in the very land of Radha and Krishna's love. Guiding pilgrims through Braj since 2018, more than 50,000 of them, I tell their story on the ground where it happened, at Radha's Barsana and Krishna's Vrindavan. Here is that love story, faithfully and with its meaning, so you may understand why, of all loves, the world holds this one holiest.
Who was Radha?
Radha (or Radhika) was the daughter of King Vrishabhanu of Barsana, a village of Braj and the foremost of the gopis, the cowherd maidens who loved Krishna. But she is far more than a village girl: in the devotional tradition, Radha is the very embodiment of divine love, Krishna's own hladini shakti, his bliss-giving energy, made a person. She is worshipped as the supreme goddess and the queen of Braj, honoured even before Krishna himself, which is why the greeting of the land is not 'Krishna Krishna' but 'Radhe Radhe'. To know Radha is to know that she and Krishna are not two but one, love and the beloved, inseparable.
How Radha and Krishna met
Radha and Krishna met as children in the land of Braj. Krishna grew up in Nandgaon, the village of his foster father Nanda and Radha in nearby Barsana and the two villages face each other across the plain. As children and youths they played together in the groves and along the Yamuna and their bond grew into the deepest love. Krishna, the enchanting flute-player and Radha, the fairest of the gopis, became the divine lovers whose play (leela) fills the story of Vrindavan. Their love was tender, playful and utterly pure, the love of the soul discovering God.
Their love in Vrindavan: the episodes of the leela
The love of Radha and Krishna unfolded in a series of beloved episodes or leelas, in the groves of Vrindavan and the villages of Braj. Here are the great ones.
Episode | The story of their love |
The flute (Venu Geet) | Krishna's flute calls across Braj and Radha and the gopis leave all to run to him |
The Raas Leela | The divine circular dance on the full-moon night, the height of their love, remembered at Nidhivan |
Maan Leela | Radha's loving sulk, soothed by Krishna, remembered at the Maan Mandir in Barsana |
Play by the Yamuna | Their games and meetings along the river, at the ghats and in the groves |
The separation (Viraha) | Krishna leaves Braj for Mathura; the pain of parting becomes the deepest love of all |
The great episodes of Radha and Krishna's love, played out in Braj.
The most sublime is the Raas Leela, the divine dance of Krishna with Radha and the gopis on the full-moon night, remembered at the mysterious grove of Nidhivan, where it is believed to be danced still each night. And the tenderest is the Maan Leela, Radha's loving sulk, soothed by Krishna at the Maan Mandir on the hill of Barsana and by the lovely Prem Sarovar, the 'lake of love'.
The separation: why their love is the highest
Here is the heart of the story and its greatest mystery. When Krishna was still a youth, he left Braj for Mathura, to slay the tyrant Kansa and fulfil his destiny as a king and, though he lived on for many years at Mathura and Dwarka, he never returned to live in Vrindavan or with Radha. So the love of Radha and Krishna was crowned not with union but with separation, viraha. Radha remained in Braj and her whole life became a longing for her beloved. Yet the devotional tradition holds this separation to be not a tragedy but the very height of love: for in longing, the soul's love for God burns purest and deepest, undimmed by possession. Radha's viraha, her aching, faithful longing, is honoured as the supreme love, the model for every devotee who yearns for the Lord. Their love needed no marriage to be eternal; indeed, its very incompleteness on earth is its perfection.
Did Radha and Krishna marry? And why they are worshipped together
So did they never marry? In the worldly sense, no; they did not wed and live together and Krishna married his queens far away at Dwarka. (Some later texts, like the Brahmavaivarta Purana, tell of a divine, eternal marriage in the spiritual realm, performed by Brahma, but this is a heavenly union, not a worldly one.) And yet Radha and Krishna are worshipped together, always, as the divine couple, at temples across Braj and the world, for their union is deeper than marriage: they are two halves of one divine whole, love and the beloved. This is why the deities are almost always shown together, Radha-Krishna and never Krishna alone and why Radha's name comes first. To understand that the lovers who never married on earth are eternally one in heaven is to understand the mystery at the heart of their story.
The love avatar: Radha and Krishna as divine love itself
In the deepest view, Radha and Krishna are not merely lovers but the very descent or avatar, of divine love into the world, God and God's own love-energy, come to show humanity what love truly is. Their love is the eternal play of the divine and to meditate on it is a path to God. The great saint Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, whom devotees revere as the combined avatar of Radha and Krishna together, the Lord taking the heart and mood of Radha to taste his own love, spread this worship across India and it is his tradition that fills Vrindavan with kirtan to this day. So the Radha Krishna 'love avatar' is the descent of divine love itself, made visible in Braj for all to see and share.
Where to feel their love: the land of Braj
The Radha Krishna love story is not confined to books; you can walk its very land. Radha's Barsana, with its hilltop Radha Rani temple, is her village; the groves of Vrindavan are where they danced the Raas; the Banke Bihari temple and the historic Radha Raman temple enshrine their love; and the Yamuna at Kesi Ghat flows where they played. To visit Braj is to step into their love story and to feel it as living, not past. It is most alive at Radhashtami, Radha's birthday and the Raas is remembered at Sharad Purnima; see the Mathura Vrindavan festivals calendar and we can arrange your pooja and seva.
The honest bit
Honest words from one born in Braj. The Radha Krishna love story comes from the devotional and scriptural tradition, above all the Bhagavata Purana, the Gita Govinda of Jayadeva and the Gaudiya tradition of Chaitanya and there are many tellings, so details differ between them, some texts barely name Radha, others exalt her above all. Do not be troubled by the differences; the truth of their love is one. And do not mistake it for an ordinary romance: this is not a tale of two lovers, but the story of the soul and God, told as a love story so that the human heart can grasp the divine. Radha's longing is your own soul's longing for the Lord; her love is the love you are made for. Come to Braj, chant 'Radhe Radhe' and you will feel that their love is not a story at all, but the deepest reality.
