Among the crowded, famous temples of Vrindavan sits one of its most ancient and serene spots, so quiet that many pilgrims pass it by: Shringar Vat, also known as Nityananda Vat. On the banks of the Yamuna near Imali Tala, this is the sacred land where, the Braj tradition tells us, Lord Krishna himself adorned Shri Radha with his own hands. 'Shringar' means to adorn and 'Vat' means banyan tree. A Word From Your Guide
I am Gurudutt, born in Gokul and guiding pilgrims through Braj since 2018, more than fifty thousand of them over the years. Shringar Vat is one of the places I love to bring devotees who want to feel the real, quiet soul of Vrindavan, away from the rush. It holds two treasures at once: the tender leela of Krishna adorning Radha and the meditation seat of the great Nityananda Prabhu. In this guide I will tell you both stories, show you what to see and help you find this hidden gem on the Yamuna bank.
The Shringar Leela: Where Krishna Adorned Radha
The heart of this place is one of the most tender leelas of Braj. The tradition tells that during the Raas Leela, Radha Rani grew displeased and hid beneath a banyan tree in this secluded spot by the Yamuna. Lord Krishna came in search of her and to soothe her tiredness and sorrow he sat with her and lovingly adorned her with his own hands: he combed her hair, applied kajal to her eyes and dressed her in beautiful forest flowers and gems. From this act of loving adornment, this shringar, the place takes its name, Shringar Vat. It is a leela of devotion and reconciliation and to stand here is to stand where that gentle love is said to have unfolded. The same riverbank was also where Balarama and the cowherd boys would adorn Krishna with peacock feathers, flowers and gunja garlands while grazing their cows.
Nityananda Vat: The Meditation Seat of Nityananda Prabhu
Shringar Vat carries a second, equally precious identity as Nityananda Vat. During his visit to Vrindavan in the 16th century, Mahaprabhu Shri Nityananda, the great companion of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, spent long periods here in meditation and Harinam Sankirtan beneath this ancient banyan tree. His divine seat and footprints are still honoured at the site. For followers of the Gaudiya Vaishnava tradition, this makes Shringar Vat a doubly sacred place, both a leela sthal of Radha Krishna and a bhajan sthal of one of their greatest acharyas. It sits in the same sacred stretch of old Vrindavan as Nidhivan and Seva Kunj, the heart of the Raas Leela tradition.
The Rare Gaudiya Relics Preserved Here
What surprises many visitors is the treasury of rare heritage this humble temple quietly preserves. Devotees can view extraordinary artifacts belonging to the great saints of the Gaudiya tradition, including the original chanting rosary (japa mala) of Shri Jiva Goswami original ornaments of Shri Nityananda Prabhu and original handwritten manuscripts by Shri Rupa Goswami and Shri Jiva Goswami. To see the very mala once held by Jiva Goswami or the handwriting of Rupa Goswami who shaped so much of Gaudiya devotion, is a rare and moving privilege, the kind of thing you will find nowhere else. Please view these relics with the deepest respect.
The Ancient Banyan and the Temple
The original banyan tree under which the leela took place is now preserved as a revered stump, but a great banyan that grew from a branch of that same original tree still spreads over the site today, a living link to the ancient leela. Just behind the banyan is a beautiful temple whose tableaux and statues depict the pastimes of Krishna combing and adorning Radha Rani, so you can see the very leela the place is named for. Compared with the busy, crowded temples elsewhere in Vrindavan, Shringar Vat is wonderfully peaceful and secluded, exactly the kind of quiet corner that is ideal for sitting a while in meditation.

How to Reach Shringar Vat
Shringar Vat lies in old Vrindavan near Imali Tala and Keshi Ghat, on the banks of the Yamuna. The lanes here are narrow and often closed to larger vehicles, so most pilgrims arrive on foot through the old town or take a cycle or e-rickshaw to the nearest point and walk in. Because it is tucked away and not as signposted as the big temples, a local guide genuinely helps you find it. We can arrange a Mathura Vrindavan taxi to the edge of the old town and guide you on foot. See the whole layout on our Vrindavan city map to plan your walking route.
Practical Tips for Your Visit
Go in the quiet hours, early morning or evening, to feel the meditative calm of the place.
Ask locals for Nityananda Vat if you cannot find Shringar Vat; both names lead here.
View the relics respectfully and follow the temple's guidance on photography.
Pair it with nearby spots like Keshi Ghat, Imali Tala and Seva Kunj on one walk.
Wear simple footwear you can slip off easily and dress modestly.
Sit a while; this is a place to meditate, not to rush through for a photo.
The Honest Bit
Let me be honest about what to expect. Shringar Vat is not a grand, polished monument; it is a small, ancient, quiet temple and that very simplicity is its beauty. If you come expecting the scale of Prem Mandir or the fame of Banke Bihari, you may walk past it and many do. But if you come wanting to feel the tender heart of Braj, the place where Krishna is said to have adorned Radha with his own hands and to sit where Nityananda Prabhu meditated, then this hidden corner will give you something the crowded temples cannot: stillness. It can be a little hard to find in the old lanes, so allow time and do not be shy to ask the way. For a comfortable stay in Vrindavan, see our list of Mathura and Vrindavan hotels.
