I am Gurudutt, born in Gokul in the Mathura district, guiding pilgrims and travellers through Braj since 2018: more than 50,000 of them. Many who come to Mathura and Vrindavan for the darshan of Krishna also wish to see the Taj Mahal at Agra, the wonder of the world, which lies close by and a one day trip to Agra from Braj is easy and rewarding. Here is everything you need: the distance, the routes, how to reach Agra by car, bus or train and a full plan for a one day Agra tour from Mathura or Vrindavan, told by someone from this land. Book a car with our Mathura Vrindavan taxi service, message on WhatsApp at +91 7302265809, any day from 8 AM to 9 PM.

Vrindavan to Agra distance and time

The distance from Vrindavan to Agra is about seventy to seventy five kilometres by road and the drive takes about one and a half to two hours by the fine Yamuna Expressway, which sweeps down towards Agra. From Mathura, a little to the south, it is a little shorter, about fifty five to sixty kilometres, about an hour to an hour and a half. So both Vrindavan and Mathura are within an easy morning’s drive of Agra, which is what makes a one day trip so simple. The table gives the distances from Braj to Agra.

How to reach Agra from Mathura and Vrindavan

There are three ways to reach Agra from Braj and it helps to know each. The best by far, for a one day trip, is a private car or taxi, which carries you door to door in an hour and a half or two, waits for you at the Taj and the Fort and lets you go at your own pace and return when you wish; for a day trip taking in several sights, nothing else compares. There are also trains from Mathura junction to Agra, a short and cheap ride of under an hour, though you must then find transport around Agra and back to the station. And there are buses from Mathura towards Agra, cheaper still but slower and less flexible. For a one day Agra tour that makes the most of the day, the private car is the sensible choice and the one I recommend. The table sets out the ways.

A one day Agra tour from Mathura Vrindavan

A one day Agra tour from Mathura or Vrindavan is very doable if you begin early and it lets you add the wonder of the world to your pilgrimage of the land of Krishna. A good plan is to set out from Braj early in the morning, reaching Agra by mid morning and to see first the Taj Mahal, the white marble monument of love, the wonder of the world; then the mighty red Agra Fort of the Mughals nearby; and, if time allows, the delicate tomb of Itmad ud Daula, the little Taj, across the river. After a meal you drive back to Mathura or Vrindavan by the evening, your day complete. It is a full day but a rewarding one, joining the greatest of monuments to the holiest of lands. The table gives a simple plan.

What to see in Agra

Agra holds some of the greatest monuments in all the world, the legacy of the Mughal emperors who made it their capital. Foremost is the Taj Mahal, the white marble mausoleum built by the emperor Shah Jahan for his beloved queen Mumtaz Mahal, the very symbol of India and one of the wonders of the world, loveliest of all at sunrise. Then the mighty Agra Fort, the great red sandstone fortress and palace of the Mughals, from whose walls the imprisoned Shah Jahan gazed at last upon the Taj. And the delicate Itmad ud Daula, the little Taj, the exquisite marble tomb across the Yamuna and the gardens of the Mehtab Bagh with their view of the Taj. Our places to visit near the Taj Mahal, Agra guide covers the city and its wonders in full.

Combining Agra with your Braj pilgrimage

The great beauty of Braj and Agra lying so close is that they may be joined into one journey, the wonder of the world and the land of Krishna together. Many pilgrims give their main days to Mathura, Vrindavan and the rest of Braj and add one day for Agra, as this guide describes; others come first to Agra for the Taj and then to Braj or make a loop of Delhi, Agra and Braj. However you arrange it, the closeness of the two makes for one of the richest short journeys in India. Our Agra Mathura Vrindavan tour by car guide sets out how to see all three together and the Agra Mathura Vrindavan tour package covers them as one trip.

When to go

The cool months of October to March are much the best for a one day Agra trip, pleasant for the Taj and its gardens and for the drive alike. Remember always that the Taj Mahal is closed on Fridays, so plan your Agra day for another day of the week; and that the Taj is loveliest and coolest at sunrise, so an early start is doubly rewarded. The peak summer of May and June is punishingly hot for the marble courts of the Taj, so the cool season is far kinder. Our best time to visit Mathura Vrindavan guide is the seasons.

The honest bit

Honest words on a one day Agra trip from Braj, from one born in Mathura. The distance is short, about seventy kilometres from Vrindavan and the road is good, so agree your car fare in advance and beware anyone who inflates the distance or the price. The most important thing to know: the Taj Mahal is closed every Friday, so never plan your Agra day for a Friday; and its entry ticket is paid separately to the government and must never be bundled into a car or tour price, so beware anyone who claims to include it. Start very early to see the Taj at sunrise and to have time for the Fort before the drive back. In Braj itself, remember that darshan everywhere is free and no official VIP pass exists at Banke Bihari or anywhere in the land. Plan around the Friday closure, keep the car fare and the Taj ticket separate and clear, start early and a one day Agra trip will add the wonder of the world beautifully to your pilgrimage to the land of Krishna.

Why Experience My India is the right choice

I was born in Gokul Mahaban Bangar, in the Mathura district and both Braj and its great neighbour Agra are my own home ground. Guiding since 2018, more than 50,000 pilgrims and travellers, 4.5 stars across 204 Google reviews, WhatsApp first, 8 AM to 9 PM daily. What a local brings to a one day Agra tour from Braj is a good car and the fastest route with the fair fare set in advance, the early start to catch the Taj at sunrise, the honest word on the free darshan in Braj and the separate Taj ticket and the Friday closure and the joining of Agra to the whole of your Braj pilgrimage in the right order. One clear fare and never a charge for free darshan.

Tip from Gurudutt: for a one day Agra trip from Braj, start very early, before dawn if you can and reach the Taj Mahal for its opening at sunrise, when the white marble glows in the first light, the air is cool and the crowds are thinnest. See the Taj first while it is at its most beautiful, then the Agra Fort and you will have a full and glorious day and be back in Braj by evening for the aarti. And never, ever plan your Agra day for a Friday, when the Taj is closed, a mistake that has spoiled many a trip. Plan it well, start early and the wonder of the world will crown your pilgrimage to the land of Krishna.

Garud Govind Mandir, Vrindavan: Krishna on Garuda and the Braj Remedy for Kaal Sarp Dosh

The Garud Govind Mandir stands at Chhatikara, on the Mathura to Vrindavan road, about 7 km from the heart of Vrindavan, and enshrines a rare form of Krishna as Govind seated upon Garuda, his great eagle mount. It is the one temple in Braj where pilgrims come for relief from Kaal Sarp Dosh and Sarp Dosh, for Garuda is the king of birds and the natural subduer of serpents. In summer, darshan runs about 4:30 AM to 3:30 PM and 4:30 PM to 10:00 PM; in winter, about 6:00 AM to 4:00 PM and 4:30 PM to 9:30 PM. Darshan is free.
