📌 QUICK ANSWER
Vrishabhanu Kund (also called Bhanokhar or Jal Mahal) is a historic stepped pond in Barsana, built by King Vrishabhanu, the father of Shrimati Radha Rani, beside his palace on the Bhanugarh hills. It was his personal daily bathing pool and a playground for Radha and her sakhis. Its adjacent Jal Mahal palace is famously designed with three storeys standing submerged under the water. It lies about 1 km east of the hilltop Radha Rani temple (Laadli Mahal) and is typically open for darshan and holy dips from 6:00 AM to 6:30 PM daily. Barsana is Radha's own town and before it was hers it belonged to her father. Vrishabhanu Kund is the stepped stone pond that King Vrishabhanu, Radha's father and the chieftain of Barsana, built beside his palace when he moved his family to the Bhanugarh hills. Its most remarkable feature gives it its popular name, Jal Mahal, the Water Palace: three storeys of the adjacent palace are designed to stand submerged beneath the water. It is one of the most sacred and least rushed kunds in all of Braj, dear to Radha and Krishna alike. Plan your visit with our Mathura Vrindavan tour packages.

A Word From Your Guide
I am Gurudutt, born in Gokul and guiding pilgrims through Braj since 2018, more than fifty thousand of them over the years. In this guide I will tell you who built the kund and why, the remarkable Jal Mahal design, the king's daily ritual, the divine pastimes believed to have happened here, what the scriptures and the ASI inscription say about its antiquity, the timings and how to reach it. History: The Pond of King Vrishabhanu
The history of Vrishabhanu Kund reaches back to the Dvapara Yuga. According to sacred texts such as the Braj Bhakti Vilas and the Bhakti-ratnakara, the reservoir was established by King Vrishabhanu, the chieftain of Barsana and the father of Shrimati Radha Rani herself.
When King Vrishabhanu shifted his residence and kingdom from Raval, Radha's birthplace, to the safety of the Bhanugarh hills of Barsana, to protect his family from the atrocities of King Kamsa, he established his palace here and built this accompanying stepped pond beside it. The antiquity of the site is corroborated by an ancient Archaeological Survey of India inscription found nearby, dated to Vikram Samvat 1666, the early 17th century, attesting both to its age and to the restorations it has seen over the centuries.
The Jal Mahal: The Submerged Water Palace
The feature that gives Vrishabhanu Kund its popular name is genuinely extraordinary. The structure adjacent to the kund, the palace of King Vrishabhanu, was built with a unique architectural design in which three storeys are made to remain permanently submerged beneath the water level of the pond. This is why it is called the Jal Mahal, the Water Palace. To stand at the kund and know that whole floors of a Dvapara-era palace lie beneath the still water is to feel the deep age of the place. It is among the most unusual sacred structures anywhere in Braj and a reason in itself to come.
Spiritual Significance of Vrishabhanu Kund
Vrishabhanu Kund is held highly sacred by Vaishnava devotees, especially within the Gaudiya and Nimbarka traditions. Its sanctity rests on several threads:
The king's ritual bath: it was the personal bathing pool of Maharaja Vrishabhanu, who by local legend took his mandatory daily bath here before walking to worship Shri Brajeshwar Mahadev, the Shiva of Barsana.
Radha's playground: devotees believe the kund was a place of play for Radha Rani and her sakhis and that Radha and Krishna performed celestial water-sports, jala-keli, here, making it dear to them both.
Liberation from sins: the scriptures state that anyone who faithfully bathes in or pays respects to these holy waters is cleansed of worldly sins and blessed with pure devotion, Bhakti.
For those who wish to have a puja or an offering made at the kund in their family's name, our pooja services can arrange it with the local priests.
Location and How to Reach Vrishabhanu Kund
The kund sits amid tranquil surroundings on the eastern edge of Barsana town, about 1 km east of the famous hilltop Radha Rani temple, the Laadli Mahal. Its address is Vrishabhanu Kund (Bhanokhar), Barsana Rural, Mathura district, pincode 281405.
From the Radha Rani temple (Laadli Mahal): about 1 km east; a short drive or walk.
From Mathura: about 42 to 50 km to the north-west; roughly 1.5 hours by road.
From Nandgaon: about 8 to 9 km; twenty to thirty minutes, the natural pairing.
From Vrindavan: about 45 to 50 km; allow around 1.5 hours by car.
Barsana is rural Braj, so a car is much the easiest way to reach it and to pair the kund with the Radha Rani temple and the other Barsana sites. Our Mathura Vrindavan taxi drivers know the Barsana roads and ponds well.

Best Time to Visit Vrishabhanu Kund
The kund is open daily, roughly 6:00 AM to 6:30 PM, but Barsana is loveliest in the cool months and most electric at its two great festivals, Radhashtami and Lathmar Holi.
October to March: the best season; pleasant weather for the Barsana hill and the ponds.
Radhashtami (Aug or Sep): Radha's birthday, the greatest festival in her own town, profoundly joyful but very crowded.
Lathmar Holi (Feb or Mar): Barsana's world-famous stick Holi; thrilling but extremely crowded.
Mornings: the calmest and most fitting time at a bathing kund, as in the king's own day.

Practical Tips for Your Visit
Pair it with the Radha Rani temple; it is just 1 km east, the natural companion to the hilltop darshan.
Look for the Jal Mahal; ask a local to point out the submerged stories of the palace, the kund's great marvel.
Come in the morning for the gentlest atmosphere and the best light on the water.
Take a local guide; Barsana's ponds are humble and unsignposted and the Vrishabhanu story is the reason to come.
Bathe respectfully only where the ghats allow and treat the water as sacred, not for play.
Carry small notes for an offering at the kund, given willingly to the priests.
The Honest Bit
Let me be honest: Vrishabhanu Kund is a historic, serene pond, not a grand temple with facilities. Its power is in its story and its remarkable Jal Mahal, so go knowing them and the still water becomes deeply moving. Barsana is rural, spread-out Braj, with a hill to the Radha Rani temple and ponds around the town, quite unlike the compact temple-tourism of Vrindavan and the kund can look quiet and neglected outside festival times. The water in Braj's kunds varies in cleanliness, so admire and respect it rather than plunging in carelessly. A local who can walk you from the Radha Rani temple to the kund and tell the Vrishabhanu story makes the visit far richer. Why Experience My India Is the Right Choice
I am Gurudutt, born in Gokul, guiding pilgrims through Braj since 2018, more than fifty thousand of them by now. The ponds and sites of Barsana are exactly where a local guide is worth everything: we know the short way from the Radha Rani temple to Vrishabhanu Kund, the Jal Mahal and Vrishabhanu story to tell here, the right order to see Barsana and pair it with Nandgaon and how to time a visit around Radhashtami or Lathmar Holi. We are a Ministry of Tourism certified operator with a fleet of more than fifty vehicles, we meet you at the station or airport, we keep one clear fare with no surprises and we never charge for darshan that is free. We are rated 4.5 stars and we answer on WhatsApp from 8 AM to 9 PM.
Tip from Gurudutt: Come to Vrishabhanu Kund in the early morning, the hour Radha's father himself bathed here and sit a while by the still water. Picture the old king stepping down the ghats at dawn before walking off to worship his Shiva and picture, too, a little Radha and her sakhis playing at this very pond. Then look for the submerged Jal Mahal, whole floors of a palace resting beneath the water and let the sheer age of it settle on you. This is where the story of Radha's family begins and almost no visitor ever walks down to see it. |
