Aligarh, the historic city of western Uttar Pradesh and Vrindavan, the temple town of Krishna, sit an easy two hours apart, so a Braj darshan is a simple day trip from Aligarh. Whether you come for a single day or an overnight stay, the journey is short and straightforward. Here, from one born in Braj, is the complete guide to the Aligarh to Vrindavan distance, the routes and the best way to travel. Plan your visit with our Mathura Vrindavan tour packages.

Key takeaways

  • Aligarh to Vrindavan is about 69 to 85 km, roughly 2 hours by road.

  • The shortest route is via the Mathura-Aligarh Road, about 69.3 km.

  • The NH 509 and NH 530B route is a little longer at 85.4 km but marginally quicker.

  • It is an easy day trip from Aligarh or a relaxed overnight stay.

  • A private car is by far the easiest way; the trip takes about 2 hours each way.

  • Mathura Junction is the railhead if you prefer the train, about 14 km from Vrindavan.

I am Gurudutt, born in Gokul in the Mathura district, guiding pilgrims through Braj since 2018, more than 50,000 of them. Aligarh is close by and I welcome many travellers from there for a day's darshan or an overnight visit. Here is everything you need, told by someone who receives them and knows the roads: the exact distances and routes both ways, the train and other options, the best way to travel and the darshan at the end.

Aligarh to Vrindavan distance and driving routes

By road, the distance from Aligarh to Vrindavan is about 69 to 85 km and the drive takes roughly 2 hours. There are three main ways.

Interestingly, the Mathura-Aligarh Road route is much the shortest in distance (69.3 km) yet not the quickest, as it runs through town, while the longer NH 509 and NH 530B route is marginally faster on the highway. On the day, live traffic decides the smoothest line and a car that knows the roads picks it; our Mathura Vrindavan taxi service can carry you the whole way.

Vrindavan to Aligarh distance (the return journey)

The road back is much the same, about 78 to 82 km and around 2 hours. If you are planning the reverse leg, these are the main routes.

Aligarh to Vrindavan by train

The train is an option, as Aligarh is on the main line. There is no major station in Vrindavan, so you travel to Mathura Junction, the railhead for Braj and drive the last 14 km. Trains run between Aligarh Junction and Mathura, taking about 1.5 to 2 hours and we can meet your train at Mathura.

  • Where to board: trains run between Aligarh Junction and Mathura Junction.

  • How long it takes: roughly 1.5 to 2 hours by train.

  • The last leg: from Mathura Junction, Vrindavan is about 14 km, around 30 minutes.

  • For a short hop like this, a car is usually simpler than the train.

Aligarh to Vrindavan by air

There is no sense in flying such a short distance. If you are arriving in the region from afar, the nearest major airport is Delhi, about 150 km from Braj, from where you drive to Aligarh or straight to Vrindavan. For the Aligarh to Vrindavan hop itself, a car is by far the simplest way.

  • Nearest major airport: Delhi (Indira Gandhi International), about 150 km from Braj.

  • Coming soon: the new Noida International Airport at Jewar will be closer to Braj.

  • From the airport, the journey to Braj is by road.

  • For the Aligarh to Vrindavan hop itself, a car is the answer.

Aligarh to Vrindavan by bus

Buses are the budget option. State and private buses run frequently between Aligarh, Mathura and Vrindavan, taking around 2.5 to 3 hours and are cheap. But they are slower and less direct than a car, so a taxi is easier for a comfortable day trip.

The best way to travel

For this short hop, the choice is simple. A private car is by far the easiest and most comfortable, taking you door to door and around the temples; a train to Mathura is a good-value alternative; and the bus is the cheapest but slower. The table sets them side by side.

A quick comparison. For Aligarh to Vrindavan, a private car is easiest.

Breaking the journey and what to see on the way

This is a short drive that needs no break and the joy is the darshan at the end. Many travellers from Aligarh combine Vrindavan with Mathura, only 14 km on, seeing Krishna's birthplace and his childhood temple town together in a single day. As you approach, the temple skyline of Vrindavan rises over the Braj plain.

What to see when you arrive

Once in Vrindavan, the darshans begin. The most beloved is the Banke Bihari temple, best in the cool morning and the grand Prem Mandir with its evening light show. Add ISKCON Vrindavan for its continuous kirtan, the mysterious grove of Nidhivan and the evening Yamuna aarti at Kesi Ghat. In nearby Mathura, see the Krishna Janmabhoomi, the birthplace and the grand Dwarkadhish temple, an easy pairing on a day trip from Aligarh.

The best time to visit

The cool months of October to March are much the best for the journey and for Braj, pleasant on the road and at the temples, while the summer is hot. If you travel in the festival season, around Janmashtami, Radhashtami, Diwali or Holi, expect the town to be joyful but crowded and start early. See our best time to visit Mathura Vrindavan guide and the Mathura Vrindavan festivals calendar to plan.

Tips for the journey

  • Take the Mathura-Aligarh Road for the shortest distance or NH 509 and NH 530B for a marginally quicker highway run.

  • Start early to reach the morning darshan at Banke Bihari before the crowds build.

  • Combine Vrindavan with Mathura, only 14 km on, for a fuller day trip.

  • Remember the temples close through the middle of the day, so plan your darshan around it.

  • Use one car for the day; local transport is slower for the round trip.

  • Come October to March for the most pleasant weather.

The honest bit

Honest words on the Aligarh to Vrindavan journey, from one born in Braj. This is one of the easiest day trips to Braj: the distance is short, the roads good and two hours brings you to the darshan of Krishna. The one thing to note is that the shortest route by distance, the Mathura-Aligarh Road, runs through town and is not the fastest, while the slightly longer highway route can be quicker, so a local driver picks the best line on the day. Remember the temples close through the middle of the day and start early for a calm darshan. Distances and times are approximate. If you would rather stay overnight in Braj, see our Mathura Vrindavan hotels.

Why Experience My India is the right choice

I was born in Gokul in the Mathura district and I welcome travellers from Aligarh every week for a day's darshan or an overnight stay. Guiding since 2018, more than 50,000 pilgrims, 4.5 stars on Google, WhatsApp first, 8 AM to 9 PM daily. We meet you at Mathura Junction, Aligarh or your doorstep, carry you around the temples of Vrindavan and Mathura in the right order, walk you into the old-town temples, cars cannot reach and arrange any seva, with no touts. One clear fare and never a charge for free darshan.

Tip from Gurudutt: because Aligarh is so close, come early and make a full day of it. Set out at first light, take the morning darshan of Banke Bihari before the crowds, see the temples of Vrindavan through the day and pair them with Krishna's birthplace at Mathura, only 14 km on. End with the evening Yamuna aarti at Kesi Ghat and drive home the same night, having held the whole heart of Braj in a single, easy day from Aligarh.

The booking process was simple, communication on WhatsApp was quick and everything was arranged exactly as promised. We especially appreciated the early morning start, which helped us reach Vrindavan comfortably for Banke Bihari darshan before the crowds became heavy. The team also helped us cover Mathura and Krishna Janmabhoomi in the same trip. A very smooth and well-managed Braj tour."
