Alwar, the historic city of eastern Rajasthan, is closer to Krishna's Braj than many realise, an easy three-hour drive from the holy towns of Mathura and Vrindavan, so a Braj darshan is a comfortable day trip. Whether you come for a single day or an overnight stay, the journey is short and straightforward via Bharatpur. Here, from one born in Braj, is the complete guide to the Alwar to Mathura and Vrindavan distance, the routes both ways and the best way to travel. Plan your visit with our Mathura Vrindavan tour packages.

Key takeaways

  • Alwar to Mathura is about 111 km, roughly 3 hours by road.

  • Alwar to Vrindavan is about 119 km, roughly 3 hours by road.

  • Vrindavan is a little farther than Mathura, as it lies just beyond it.

  • The shortest and quickest route is via Bharatpur Road.

  • Avoid the NE 4 and NH 44 route for this trip; it is far longer (over 180 km).

  • It is an easy day trip from Alwar or a relaxed overnight stay.

I am Gurudutt, born in Gokul in the Mathura district, guiding pilgrims through Braj since 2018, more than 50,000 of them. Alwar is close by, across the Rajasthan border towards Bharatpur and I welcome many travellers from there for a day's darshan or an overnight visit. Here is everything you need, told by someone who receives them and knows the roads: the exact distances and routes to both Mathura and Vrindavan and back, the best way to travel and the darshan at the end.

Alwar to Mathura distance and driving routes

Mathura, the birthplace of Krishna, is about 111 km from Alwar, roughly 3 hours by road. The Bharatpur Road is the direct route. There are three main ways.

Alwar to Vrindavan distance and driving routes

Vrindavan, the temple town of Krishna's childhood, is a little farther at about 119 km, roughly 3 hours, as it lies just beyond Mathura. Again, Bharatpur Road is the direct route.

The Bharatpur Road route is much the best for both towns, running through Bharatpur into Braj; the NE 4 expressway route, though it appears on maps, is far longer for this short trip and best avoided. On the day, live traffic decides the smoothest line and a car that knows the roads picks it; our Mathura Vrindavan taxi service can carry you the whole way and between the two towns, only 14 km apart.

The return journey: Mathura and Vrindavan to Alwar

The roads back are much the same, about 114 to 146 km and 3 to 4 hours. Here are the return routes for each town.

The best way to travel

For this short trip, a private car is by far the easiest and most comfortable, taking you door to door and between Mathura and Vrindavan; a train to Mathura Junction is a good-value alternative; and the bus is the cheapest but slower. The table sets them side by side.

Tight budgets, more time

A quick comparison. For Alwar to Braj, a private car is easiest.

If you come by train, there is no major station in Vrindavan, so you travel to Mathura Junction, the railhead for Braj and drive the last 14 km. We can meet your train at Mathura.

What to see when you arrive

Once in Braj, the darshans begin. In Vrindavan, see the beloved Banke Bihari temple, the marble Prem Mandir with its evening light show, the kirtan of ISKCON and the evening Yamuna aarti at Kesi Ghat. In Mathura, see the Krishna Janmabhoomi, the birthplace and the grand Dwarkadhish temple. With the two towns only 14 km apart, you can see the best of both on a day trip from Alwar; for an overnight, see our Mathura Vrindavan hotels.

The best time to visit

The cool months of October to March are much the best for the journey and for Braj, pleasant on the road and at the temples, while the summer is hot. Start early to catch the morning darshan before the crowds and to work around the midday temple closures. The festivals of Janmashtami, Radhashtami, Diwali and Holi are glorious but very crowded. See our best time to visit Mathura Vrindavan guide and the Mathura Vrindavan festivals calendar.

Tips for the journey

  • Take the Bharatpur Road for the shortest and quickest route to both towns.

  • Avoid the NE 4 and NH 44 route; it is far longer (over 180 km) for this short trip.

  • Start early to reach the morning darshan at Banke Bihari before the crowds build.

  • See both towns together; Mathura and Vrindavan are only 14 km, about 30 minutes, apart.

  • Remember the temples close through the middle of the day, so plan your darshan around it.

  • Come October to March for the most pleasant weather.

The honest bit

Honest words on the Alwar to Braj journey, from one born in Braj. This is one of the easier day trips to Krishna's land from Rajasthan: the distance is short, about 111 km and three hours brings you to the darshan. The one clear tip: take the Bharatpur Road, which is much the shortest and ignore the NE 4 expressway route for this trip, which is over 180 km, nearly double, as the times above show; a map may suggest the expressway, but it is the wrong choice here. Vrindavan is only a little farther than Mathura and the two are 14 km apart, so see both. Remember the temples close through the midday and start early. Distances and times are approximate.

Why Experience My India is the right choice

I was born in Gokul in the Mathura district and I welcome travellers from Alwar and Rajasthan every week for a day's darshan or an overnight stay. Guiding since 2018, more than 50,000 pilgrims, 4.5 stars on Google, WhatsApp first, 8 AM to 9 PM daily. We meet you at Mathura Junction, Alwar or your doorstep, carry you around the temples of Vrindavan and Mathura in the right order, walk you into the old-town temples cars cannot reach and arrange any seva, with no touts. One clear fare and never a charge for free darshan.

Tip from Gurudutt: because Alwar is so close, come early and make a full day of it. Set out at first light on the Bharatpur Road, take the morning darshan of Banke Bihari before the crowds, see the temples of Vrindavan through the day and pair them with Krishna's birthplace at Mathura, only 14 km on. End with the evening Yamuna aarti and drive home the same night, having held the whole heart of Braj in a single, easy day from Alwar.

"I booked my Alwar to Mathura and Vrindavan tour with Experience My India, and the entire trip was very well organised. They arranged a comfortable private car from Alwar, picked us up on time and planned the darshan in a smooth order. We visited Banke Bihari Temple, Prem Mandir, ISKCON Vrindavan and Krishna Janmabhoomi without feeling rushed. The driver was polite and knew the local routes well. We were very happy with the service and would definitely book Experience My India again."

"Our Mathura Vrindavan day trip from Alwar with Experience My India was a wonderful experience. Since we wanted to cover both towns in one day, their team planned everything perfectly, including the drive via Bharatpur Road and temple visits. The car was clean and comfortable, and the team helped us avoid unnecessary waiting and confusion around the temples. The evening visit to Kesi Ghat was especially memorable. Experience My India made our Braj darshan simple, peaceful and enjoyable."
