I am Gurudutt, born in Gokul in the Mathura district, guiding pilgrims through Braj since 2018, more than 50,000 of them. Ballabgarh and the Faridabad NCR are close by and I welcome many travellers from there for a day's darshan or an overnight visit. Here is everything you need, told by someone who receives them and knows the roads: the exact distances and routes to both Mathura and Vrindavan and back, the best way to travel and the darshan at the end.

Ballabgarh to Mathura distance and driving routes

Mathura, the birthplace of Krishna, is about 111 km from Ballabgarh, roughly 2 hours by road. NH 44 is the direct route. There are three main ways.

Ballabgarh to Vrindavan distance and driving routes

Vrindavan, the temple town of Krishna's childhood, is a little closer at about 104 km, roughly 2 hours, as it lies on the near side coming from the NCR. Again, NH 44 is the direct route.

NH 44 is the simplest and fastest for both towns; the peripheral expressway routes are longer, useful mainly to avoid Delhi-side traffic. On the day, live traffic decides the smoothest line and a car that knows the roads picks it; our Mathura Vrindavan taxi service can carry you the whole way and between the two towns, only 14 km apart.

The return journey: Mathura and Vrindavan to Ballabgarh

The roads back are much the same, about 104 to 128 km and around 2 hours. Here are the return routes for each town.

The best way to travel

For this short hop, a private car is by far the easiest and most comfortable, taking you door to door and between Mathura and Vrindavan; a train to Mathura Junction is a good-value alternative; and the bus is the cheapest but slower. The table sets them side by side.

Tight budgets, more time

A quick comparison. For Ballabgarh to Braj, a private car is easiest.

If you come by train, there is no major station in Vrindavan, so you travel to Mathura Junction, the railhead for Braj and drive the last 14 km. We can meet your train at Mathura.

What to see in Mathura and Vrindavan

In Vrindavan, the most beloved is the Banke Bihari temple, best in the cool morning and the grand Prem Mandir with its evening light show. Add ISKCON Vrindavan, the grove of Nidhivan and the evening Yamuna aarti at Kesi Ghat. In Mathura, see the Krishna Janmabhoomi, the birthplace, the grand Dwarkadhish temple and the Vishram Ghat aarti. With the two towns only 14 km apart, you can see the best of both on a day trip from Ballabgarh.

The best time to visit

The cool months of October to March are much the best for the journey and for Braj, pleasant on the road and at the temples, while the summer is hot. Start early to catch the morning darshan before the crowds and to work around the midday temple closures. The festivals of Janmashtami, Radhashtami, Diwali and Holi are glorious but very crowded. See our best time to visit Mathura Vrindavan guide and the Mathura Vrindavan festivals calendar to plan and we can arrange any pooja and seva.

Tips for the journey

  • Take NH 44, the Delhi-Agra highway, for the shortest and quickest route to both towns.

  • Use the peripheral expressway routes only to avoid Delhi-side traffic; they are longer.

  • Start early to reach the morning darshan at Banke Bihari before the crowds build.

  • See both towns together; Mathura and Vrindavan are only 14 km, about 30 minutes, apart.

  • Remember the temples close through the middle of the day, so plan your darshan around it.

  • Come October to March for the most pleasant weather.

The honest bit

Honest words on the Ballabgarh to Braj journey, from one born in Braj. This is one of the easiest day trips to Krishna's land: the distance is short, the roads are good and two hours brings you to the darshan. NH 44, the direct highway, is the shortest and quickest for both towns; the peripheral expressway routes are longer and only worth taking to skirt Delhi traffic. Vrindavan is slightly closer than Mathura, but they are only 14 km apart, so see both. Remember the temples close through the middle of the day and start early. Distances and times are approximate. If you would rather stay overnight, see our Mathura Vrindavan hotels.

Why Experience My India is the right choice

I was born in Gokul in the Mathura district and I welcome travellers from Ballabgarh and the Faridabad NCR every week. Guiding since 2018, more than 50,000 pilgrims, 4.5 stars on Google, WhatsApp first, 8 AM to 9 PM daily. We meet you at Mathura Junction, Ballabgarh or your doorstep, carry you around the temples of Vrindavan and Mathura in the right order, walk you into the old-town temples cars cannot reach and arrange any seva, with no touts. One clear fare and never a charge for free darshan.

Tip from Gurudutt: because Ballabgarh is so close, come early and make a full day of it. Set out at first light on NH 44, take the morning darshan of Banke Bihari before the crowds, see the temples of Vrindavan through the day and pair them with Krishna's birthplace at Mathura, only 14 km on. End with the evening Yamuna aarti and drive home the same night, having held the whole heart of Braj in a single, easy day from Ballabgarh.

"I booked my Mathura Vrindavan tour with Experience My India after reading their Ballabgarh to Mathura and Vrindavan travel guide, and the experience was excellent. Their team arranged a comfortable private car from Ballabgarh, planned the route perfectly and helped us cover Banke Bihari Temple, Prem Mandir, ISKCON, Krishna Janmabhoomi and Vishram Ghat smoothly. The driver was punctual and knew the local roads very well. We were very happy with the service and would definitely recommend Experience My India for a hassle-free Braj pilgrimage."

"We booked a Mathura Vrindavan tour package with Experience My India for a family day trip from Ballabgarh. The team suggested starting early so we could complete the morning darshan before the crowds became heavy. Everything was well organised, from pickup to temple visits and the return journey. The car was clean and comfortable, and the driver was polite and helpful throughout the trip. The fact that they know the local temples and routes made a big difference. We returned very happy and satisfied with the entire experience."
