Bulandshahr, the district town of western Uttar Pradesh and Mathura, the birthplace of Krishna, sit within an easy two-and-a-half-hour drive, mostly on the smooth Yamuna Expressway. So a Braj darshan is a simple day trip from Bulandshahr. Here, from one born in Braj, is the complete guide to the Bulandshahr to Mathura distance, the routes both ways and the best way to travel. Plan your visit with our Mathura Vrindavan tour packages.

Key takeaways

  • Bulandshahr to Mathura is about 133 to 140 km, roughly 2.5 hours by road.

  • The fastest route uses the Yamuna Expressway, about 138 km in around 2 hours 32 minutes.

  • The NH 34 route is a little shorter (136 km) but slower, at around 2 hours 57 minutes.

  • So the Yamuna Expressway is the better choice for its speed and smoothness.

  • It is an easy day trip from Bulandshahr or a relaxed overnight stay.

  • Vrindavan lies only 14 km beyond Mathura, an easy pairing.

I am Gurudutt, born in Gokul in the Mathura district, guiding pilgrims through Braj since 2018, more than 50,000 of them. Bulandshahr is close by, on the Yamuna Expressway corridor and I welcome many travellers from there for a day's darshan or an overnight visit. Here is everything you need, told by someone who receives them and knows the roads: the exact distances and routes both ways, the train and other options, the best way to travel and the darshan at the end.

Bulandshahr to Mathura distance and driving routes

By road, the distance from Bulandshahr to Mathura is about 133 to 140 km and the drive takes roughly 2.5 hours, mostly on the Yamuna Expressway. There are three main ways.

Bulandshahr to Mathura road routes. Approximate; the Yamuna Expressway is quickest, though not the shortest.

The Yamuna Expressway route is the quickest and smoothest; the NH 34 route is marginally shorter at 136 km but slower on lesser roads. So the expressway is the better choice. On the day, live traffic decides the smoothest line and a car that knows the roads picks it; our Mathura Vrindavan taxi service can carry you the whole way and on to Vrindavan.

Mathura to Bulandshahr distance (the return journey)

The road back is much the same, about 133 to 140 km and 2.5 to 3 hours, with the same choice of routes. If you are planning the reverse leg, these are the main routes.

Bulandshahr to Mathura by train

The train is an option, as Bulandshahr is on a branch line. There is no major station in Vrindavan, so you travel to Mathura Junction, the railhead for Braj and drive the last 14 km to Vrindavan. Trains are less direct than the road here, often via Aligarh or Khurja, so for most, a car is simpler for this short hop.

  • Where to board: trains run from Bulandshahr towards Mathura Junction, often via Aligarh or Khurja.

  • How long it takes: varies with the change; the road is usually simpler here.

  • The last leg: from Mathura Junction, Vrindavan is about 14 km, around 30 minutes.

  • For a short hop like this, a car is usually easier than the train.

Bulandshahr to Mathura by air

For this short distance, flying makes no sense. Bulandshahr has no airport; the nearest to Braj is Delhi, about 150 km away. Notably, the new Noida International Airport at Jewar is very close to Bulandshahr and to the Yamuna Expressway and will serve the region well. For the journey itself, a car is by far the simplest.

  • Bulandshahr has no airport; the nearest major one is Delhi.

  • Coming soon: the new Noida International Airport at Jewar is close to Bulandshahr.

  • From any airport, the journey to Braj is by road.

  • For the Bulandshahr to Mathura hop itself, a car is the answer.

Bulandshahr to Mathura by bus

Buses run from Bulandshahr towards Aligarh, Mathura and the Delhi side, taking around 3 to 4 hours and are the budget option. But they are slower and less direct than a car, so a taxi is easier for a comfortable day trip.

The best way to travel

For this short hop, the choice is simple. A private car is by far the easiest and most comfortable, taking you door to door and on to Vrindavan; a train to Mathura is possible but less direct; and the bus is the cheapest but slower. The table sets them side by side.

Breaking the journey and what to see on the way

This is a short drive that needs no break and the joy is the darshan at the end. Mathura, the birthplace of Krishna, is the goal and Vrindavan lies just 14 km beyond, so you may take the Krishna Janmabhoomi and drive on to the temple town. The two towns are always visited together, an easy pairing on a day trip from Bulandshahr.

What to see when you arrive

Once in Braj, the darshans begin. In Mathura, see the Krishna Janmabhoomi and the grand Dwarkadhish temple, with the evening Yamuna aarti at Vishram Ghat. Just 14 km in Vrindavan lie the beloved Banke Bihari, the marble Prem Mandir and the kirtan of ISKCON. For an overnight stay to see both unhurried, see our Mathura Vrindavan hotels.

The best time to visit

The cool months of October to March are much the best for the journey and for Braj, pleasant on the road and at the temples, while the summer is hot. Start early to catch the morning darshan before the crowds and to work around the midday temple closures. Note that December and January can bring dense fog on the expressway, which slows the drive. Braj is gloriously alive, though very crowded, during Janmashtami, Holi and Diwali. See our best time to visit Mathura Vrindavan guide and the Mathura Vrindavan festivals calendar.

Tips for the journey

  • Take the Yamuna Expressway; it is quicker and smoother than the shorter NH 34.

  • Start early to reach the morning darshan at Banke Bihari before the crowds build.

  • See both towns; Vrindavan is only 14 km beyond Mathura.

  • Remember the temples close through the middle of the day, so plan your darshan around it.

  • Avoid the December-January fog on the expressway if you can or allow extra time.

  • Come October to March for the most pleasant weather.

The honest bit

Honest words on the Bulandshahr to Mathura journey, from one born in Braj. This is one of the easier day trips to Krishna's land: the distance is short, about 138 km and two and a half hours brings you to the darshan. Take the Yamuna Expressway, which is quicker and far smoother than the marginally shorter NH 34. Vrindavan is only 14 km beyond Mathura, so see both. Remember the temples close through midday and start early. Beware the winter fog on the expressway. Distances and times are approximate. Planned well, Bulandshahr to Braj is an easy and rewarding day.

Why Experience My India is the right choice

I was born in Gokul in the Mathura district and I welcome travellers from Bulandshahr every week for a day's darshan or an overnight stay. Guiding since 2018, more than 50,000 pilgrims, 4.5 stars on Google, WhatsApp first, 8 AM to 9 PM daily. We meet you at Mathura Junction, Bulandshahr or your doorstep, carry you around the temples of Mathura and Vrindavan in the right order, walk you into the old-town temples, cars cannot reach and arrange any seva, with no touts. One clear fare and never a charge for free darshan.

Tip from Gurudutt: because Bulandshahr is so close to the expressway, come early and make a full day of it. Set out at first light on the Yamuna Expressway, take the morning darshan at Mathura's Krishna Janmabhoomi and the Dwarkadhish temple, drive the short 14 km on to Vrindavan for the afternoon and evening temples and end at the Yamuna aarti before driving home the same night. A two-and-a-half-hour drive brings you to the whole heart of Krishna's land, easily done in a day from Bulandshahr.

"Our Mathura Vrindavan tour with Experience My India was planned really well. Gurudutt ji suggested an early start from Bulandshahr so that we could reach Mathura in time for the morning darshan and avoid the heavy temple crowds later. The route, car, sightseeing timings and hotel stay were all arranged properly. We especially enjoyed Vishram Ghat in the evening and felt that every part of the trip was handled professionally."
