📌 QUICK ANSWER

The distance from Delhi to Govardhan is about 140 to 160 km by road, taking roughly 3.5 hours by car. The shortest and quickest way runs via the Delhi-Chennai Highway (NH 44) in about 140 km, around 3 hours 34 minutes. Note that the Yamuna Expressway route is longer here, because Govardhan lies west of Mathura, so the expressway means doubling back. Govardhan is famous for its 21 km parikrama around the sacred hill. To arrange a car and your Govardhan darshan, call or WhatsApp +91 7302265809.

Govardhan, the sacred hill that Krishna lifted on his little finger to shelter the people of Braj, is one of the holiest places in all of Vrindavan's land, circled each day by pilgrims walking its 21 km parikrama. It lies in the west of Braj, and from Delhi it is a comfortable three-and-a-half-hour drive. Here is how to make the journey from Delhi to Govardhan, whichever way suits you. Plan your visit with our Mathura Vrindavan tour packages.

Key takeaways

  • Delhi to Govardhan is about 140 to 160 km by road, roughly 3.5 hours by car.

  • The shortest and fastest route is via the Delhi-Chennai Highway (NH 44), about 140 km in around 3 hours 34 minutes.

  • The Yamuna Expressway route is longer here, since Govardhan lies west of Mathura, not on the expressway.

  • Govardhan is about 22 km from Mathura and 26 km from Vrindavan, in the west of Braj.

  • Govardhan is famous for its 21 km parikrama around the sacred Giriraj hill.

  • By train, reach Mathura Junction, then drive about 40 minutes on to Govardhan.

I am Gurudutt, born in Gokul in the Mathura district, guiding pilgrims through Braj since 2018, more than 50,000 of them. Govardhan, the hill Krishna lifted, is one of the most sacred places of Braj, and I take many Delhi devotees there for the darshan and the parikrama. Because it lies a little off the main road, knowing the right route matters. Here is everything you need, told by someone who receives these travellers on the highway and at the parikrama marg: the exact distances and routes both ways, the train and other options, the best way to travel, where to break the journey, and how to do the parikrama.

Delhi to Govardhan distance and driving routes

By road, the distance is around 140 to 160 km, and the drive takes about 3.5 hours depending on the route and the traffic. The key thing to know is that Govardhan lies west of Mathura, so the direct route runs down the Delhi-Chennai Highway and NH 44, not the Yamuna Expressway. There are three main ways.

The Delhi-Chennai Highway route is the shortest, and just as quick as the expressway. Note that the Yamuna Expressway route, though a fine fast road, is the longest here at about 160 km, because Govardhan lies west of Mathura, so taking the expressway means going down to Mathura and doubling back. On the day, live traffic decides the smoothest line, and a car that knows the roads to Govardhan picks it; our Mathura Vrindavan taxi service can carry you the whole way or meet you for the last leg.

Govardhan to Delhi distance (the return journey)

The road back is much the same, around 140 to 186 km, about 3.5 hours by the shorter routes. If you are planning the reverse leg, from Govardhan back to Delhi, these are the main routes.

Govardhan to Delhi road routes. Approximate; the Delhi-Chennai Highway route is shortest and quickest, the expressway route the longest.

Delhi to Govardhan by train

The train is a comfortable way to cover most of the distance, though Govardhan itself has no major station. You travel to Mathura Junction, the main railhead for Braj, and drive on to Govardhan. From Mathura Junction, Govardhan is about 22 km, roughly 40 minutes by road, and we can meet your train.

A few things worth knowing about the train:

  • Where to board: Delhi's stations have frequent trains to Mathura Junction, the main railhead for Braj.

  • How long it takes: roughly 2 to 4 hours from Delhi to Mathura, then about 40 minutes on to Govardhan.

  • Book ahead: reserve your Delhi to Mathura Junction ticket in advance, especially in festival season, when seats go quickly.

  • The last leg: from Mathura Junction we carry you to Govardhan and the parikrama marg.

Delhi to Govardhan by air

For a journey this short, flying makes no sense at all. Delhi has the nearest major airport, but Govardhan and the whole Braj region have none of their own, and the road trip is only about three and a half hours. A car is by far the best way; the train is a good alternative.

  • Nearest major airport: Delhi (Indira Gandhi International), about 140 km from Govardhan.

  • Coming soon: the new Noida International Airport at Jewar will be closer to Braj once fully operational.

  • From any airport you would still drive to Govardhan, so a car from Delhi is simplest.

  • Our honest view: from Delhi, simply drive or take a train to Mathura; there is no case for flying.

Delhi to Govardhan by bus

Buses are the budget option. State and private buses run from Delhi towards Mathura, from where a local ride brings you to Govardhan; the whole journey takes around 4 to 6 hours. It is cheaper than a car but longer and less comfortable, and since Govardhan is off the main road, a car is far more convenient for reaching the hill and the parikrama.

Which is the best way to travel?

The right choice depends on your time, budget and comfort. In short: a private car is by far the most flexible and direct, taking you right to the parikrama marg; a train to Mathura and a car onward is a good-value alternative; flying makes no sense on so short a route; and the bus is cheapest but awkward for reaching an off-road town. The table sets them side by side.

A quick comparison. For an off-road pilgrimage town like Govardhan, a private car is easily the best; the train plus a car is the value pick.

Breaking the journey: Lucknow and Agra

The drive is short and mostly on good highway, so a single break for chai and a stretch is all you need. Many travellers combine Govardhan with the nearby Kusum Sarovar, Radha Kund and Mansi Ganga, making a fuller Braj day of it. If you are coming for Govardhan Puja or Guru Purnima, or to walk the full parikrama, start very early, as both the roads and the marg fill quickly on those days.

What to see when you arrive

Govardhan's heart is the sacred Giriraj hill, circled by the 21 km parikrama that pilgrims walk barefoot in devotion. Along and near the marg lie the beautiful Kusum Sarovar, the sandstone ghat, and the holiest waters of Braj at Radha Kund and Shyam Kund. Do not miss Govind Kund nearby. Govardhan is at its most thronged during Govardhan Puja, just after Diwali.

Best time to make the trip

The cool months of October to March are much the best for the journey and for the long parikrama, while the summer of April to June is fierce for walking. Govardhan's great days are Govardhan Puja, the day after Diwali, when the hill is worshipped and thousands walk the marg, and Guru Purnima and the Mudia Purnima mela. These are glorious but very crowded, so book ahead. See our Mathura Vrindavan festivals calendar and the best time to visit Mathura Vrindavan guide.

Tips for the journey

  • Take the Delhi-Chennai Highway route; it is the shortest and just as quick as the expressway.

  • Do not take the Yamuna Expressway for Govardhan; it is longer, since the hill lies west of Mathura.

  • For the full 21 km parikrama, start before dawn and carry water; it takes several hours.

  • Combine Govardhan with Kusum Sarovar, Radha Kund and Mansi Ganga for a fuller Braj day.

  • For Govardhan Puja after Diwali, expect huge crowds; start very early.

The honest bit

Honest words on the Delhi to Govardhan journey, from one born in Braj. Govardhan is deeply holy, but it is a little off the main Mathura-Vrindavan road, so take the right route: the Delhi-Chennai Highway, not the Yamuna Expressway, which is longer here. The distances and times are approximate and shift with traffic, so choose by the day. The full parikrama is 21 km on foot, several hours of walking, so plan for it and do not underestimate it, or take a shorter darshan if you cannot walk it all. For Govardhan Puja the crowds are immense, so plan carefully; if you would rather stay overnight in Braj, see our Mathura Vrindavan hotels. Plan it well, and Giriraj rewards you richly.

Why Experience My India is the right choice

I was born in Gokul in the Mathura district, and I take travellers from Delhi to Govardhan every week, for darshan and the parikrama. Guiding since 2018, more than 50,000 pilgrims, 4.5 stars on Google, WhatsApp first, 8 AM to 9 PM daily. We meet you at Mathura Junction or Delhi, carry you by the right road to the parikrama marg, guide you around the hill and its kunds in the right order, and, if you wish, add Barsana, Nandgaon and the wider Braj, with the stories told on the ground and no touts. One clear fare, and never a charge for free darshan.

Tip from Gurudutt: if you wish to walk the full 21 km parikrama, begin before dawn in the cool dark, when the marg is quiet and the air is soft, and you will finish by mid-morning before the sun is high. If you cannot walk it all, a shorter darshan of the hill and the kunds by car is just as heartfelt. Either way, Govardhan is best given a fresh early start rather than a tired afternoon from Delhi.
