Breaking the journey and what to see on the way
If you do drive, this long journey is best broken overnight and the Delhi area, roughly two-thirds of the way, makes a natural stop. Nearer Braj, Agra with the Taj Mahal lies close to the southern end of the route, so many travellers pause there to add the Taj to their trip. And for those coming from Vaishno Devi, the journey pairs the darshan of the Mother in the north with that of Krishna in Braj, a beautiful arc across the sacred north.
What to see when you arrive
Once in Vrindavan, the darshans begin. The most beloved is the Banke Bihari temple, best in the cool morning and the grand Prem Mandir with its evening light show. Add ISKCON Vrindavan for its continuous kirtan and the evening Yamuna aarti at Kesi Ghat. For those who love the Mother, Vrindavan has its own beloved Vaishno Devi Dham here too. In nearby Mathura, see the Krishna Janmabhoomi, the birthplace and the grand Dwarkadhish temple. After a long journey, an overnight stay lets you take the darshan unhurried.
The best time to visit
The cool months of October to March are much the best for the journey and for Braj, pleasant on the road and at the temples, while the summer is hot on the plains. Note that December and January can bring dense fog on the northern highways, which slows the drive. If you travel in the festival season, around Janmashtami, Radhashtami, Diwali or Holi, expect Braj to be joyful but crowded and book ahead. Tip from Gurudutt: if you are coming from Vaishno Devi, let the journey be a pilgrimage from the Mother to Krishna. Take her darshan in the northern hills, then fly to Delhi and let us drive you the last stretch to Braj, arriving fresh for the dawn darshan of Banke Bihari and visit the Vaishno Devi Dham here in Vrindavan too, so the Mother watches over both ends of your journey. Save your energy for the temples, not the road and the long trip becomes a joyful yatra.
