Kota, the great city of southern Rajasthan and the holy towns of Mathura and Vrindavan are joined now by the fast new NE 4, the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway, which has cut the drive to Krishna's land to under seven hours. For the many devotees of Krishna in Kota and the Hadoti region, the journey to Braj is easier than ever. Here, from one born in Braj, is the complete guide to the Kota to Mathura and Vrindavan distance, the routes both ways and the best way to travel. Plan your visit with our Mathura Vrindavan tour packages.

Key takeaways

  • Kota to Mathura is about 387 km, roughly 6.5 hours by road.

  • Kota to Vrindavan is about 398 km, roughly 6.75 hours by road.

  • Vrindavan is a little farther than Mathura, as it lies just beyond it.

  • The fastest route uses the new NE 4 expressway and NH 21.

  • It is a long day's drive, best broken with a stop or done by train.

  • A private car is the most flexible; Mathura and Vrindavan are only 14 km apart.

I am Gurudutt, born in Gokul in the Mathura district, guiding pilgrims through Braj since 2018, more than 50,000 of them. Many who come to us travel from Kota and across Rajasthan and the new Delhi-Mumbai Expressway has made their journey far quicker than it once was. Here is everything you need, told by someone who receives these travellers: the exact distances and routes to both Mathura and Vrindavan and back, the best way to travel and the darshan at the end.

Kota to Mathura distance and driving routes

Mathura, the birthplace of Krishna, is about 387 km from Kota, roughly 6.5 hours by road. The new NE 4 expressway is the key. There are three main ways.

Kota to Vrindavan distance and driving routes

Vrindavan, the temple town of Krishna's childhood, is a little farther at about 398 km, roughly 6.75 hours, as it lies just beyond Mathura. Again, NE 4 with NH 21 is the fastest way.

On the smooth new NE 4, the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway, the drive is far quicker than it once was; the NH 21 link brings you the last stretch into Braj. On the day, live traffic decides the smoothest line and a car that knows the roads picks it; our Mathura Vrindavan taxi service can carry you the whole way and between the two towns, only 14 km apart.

The return journey: Mathura and Vrindavan to Kota

The roads back are a little different, about 385 to 448 km and 7 to 9 hours. Here are the return routes for each town.

By train and the best way to travel

The train is a comfortable alternative for such a long journey. Kota is a major junction on the Delhi-Mumbai main line, with many trains towards Mathura Junction, the railhead for Braj, taking about 5 to 7 hours; from Mathura, Vrindavan is 14 km, about 30 minutes and we can meet you. For the road, a private car is the most flexible, taking you door to door and between the towns; the bus is the cheapest but slowest. The table sets the options side by side.

A quick comparison. For Kota to Braj, the train or a private car is easiest.

What to see when you arrive

Once in Braj, the darshans begin. In Vrindavan, see the beloved Banke Bihari temple, the marble Prem Mandir with its evening light show, the kirtan of ISKCON and the evening Yamuna aarti at Kesi Ghat. In Mathura, see the Krishna Janmabhoomi, the birthplace and the grand Dwarkadhish temple. After the long journey, an overnight stay lets you take the darshan unhurried; see our Mathura Vrindavan hotels.

The best time to visit

The cool months of October to March are much the best for the journey and for Braj, pleasant on the road and at the temples, while the summer is very hot for so long a drive. If you travel in the festival season, around Janmashtami, Radhashtami, Diwali or Holi, expect Braj to be joyful but crowded and book ahead. See our best time to visit Mathura Vrindavan guide and the Mathura Vrindavan festivals calendar.

Tips for the journey

  • Take the NE 4 expressway with NH 21; it is the fastest for both towns.

  • Avoid the slow NH 52 route, which adds hours; the NE 4 routes are far quicker.

  • Consider the train from Kota Junction to Mathura Junction for a restful trip.

  • Break the long drive with one stop for chai and fuel at an expressway rest stop.

  • See both towns together; Mathura and Vrindavan are only 14 km apart.

  • Come October to March for the most pleasant weather over such a long journey.

The honest bit

Honest words on the Kota to Braj journey, from one born in Braj. This is a long trip, but the new Delhi-Mumbai Expressway (NE 4) has made it far quicker, under seven hours now rather than nine or more on the old highways. The one clear tip: take the NE 4 routes, not the old NH 52, which is much slower, as the times above show. Vrindavan is only a little farther than Mathura and the two are 14 km apart, so see both. For so long a drive, break it with a stop or take the comfortable train from Kota Junction. Distances and times are approximate and shift with traffic. If you would rather stay overnight, an early booking secures a good stay.

Why Experience My India is the right choice

I was born in Gokul in the Mathura district and I welcome travellers from Kota and across Rajasthan every week. Guiding since 2018, more than 50,000 pilgrims, 4.5 stars on Google, WhatsApp first, 8 AM to 9 PM daily. Whether you drive or train in, we meet you at Mathura Junction or your doorstep, carry you around the temples of Vrindavan and Mathura in the right order, walk you into the old-town temples cars cannot reach and arrange any seva, with no touts. One clear fare and never a charge for free darshan.

Tip from Gurudutt: if the long drive tires you, take the train from Kota Junction to Mathura Junction and let us meet you there, fresh for the dawn darshan of Banke Bihari. Kota sits on the great Delhi-Mumbai line, so the trains are frequent and comfortable and you arrive rested rather than road-weary. Save your energy for the temples of Krishna's land, not the highway and the journey from Kota becomes a joy.

"We recently booked our Kota to Vrindavan trip with Experience My India, and it was a wonderful experience. The team gave us a clear plan for Mathura and Vrindavan and helped us visit the important temples in the right order. We especially appreciated their local knowledge around the busy Vrindavan lanes and temple areas. Banke Bihari Temple, ISKCON, Kesi Ghat and Prem Mandir were beautifully covered. The driver was courteous and the service was reliable throughout. We returned very happy and would gladly book Experience My India again."
