I am Gurudutt, born in Gokul in the Mathura district, guiding pilgrims through Braj since 2018, more than 50,000 of them and I have grown up with these leelas as the very air of my home. What are Krishna's leelas?

A leela is a divine pastime, a play of the Lord. When Krishna descended to Braj, he lived as a cowherd child and his every act, stealing butter, dancing with the gopis, lifting a mountain, subduing demons, was a leela, at once a childlike play and a profound revelation of the divine. To the devotees of Braj, these leelas are eternal, endlessly re-enacted in the groves of Vrindavan even now. And because they happened here, in this very land, each has its place, a ghat, a grove, a hill, that pilgrims visit to touch the story.

Makhan Chori: the butter thief

The most beloved of all is Krishna the Makhan Chor, the butter thief. As a child in Gokul and Nandgaon, he and his friends would steal the fresh white butter the gopis churned, forming human pyramids to reach the pots hung high and share it among themselves and even the monkeys. Caught, he would charm his way free with his enchanting smile. This is why butter, makhan, is so beloved an offering in Braj and why Krishna is adored as the Makhan Chor, whose only theft was of love. His playful spirit lives on in the deity of Banke Bihari.

Kaliya Daman: subduing the serpent

When the many-hooded serpent Kaliya poisoned a stretch of the Yamuna, the boy Krishna leapt into the water, was coiled by the great snake and then rose to dance upon its hoods, subduing it and driving it away, sparing its life at the plea of its wives. This leela is remembered at Kaliya Ghat on the Yamuna in Vrindavan, where a kadamba tree marks the spot from which, it is said, Krishna leapt. To stand at the ghat is to see the story before you.

The Govardhan Leela: lifting the mountain

When the people of Braj, at Krishna's word, worshipped Govardhan hill instead of Indra, the king of the gods sent a terrible storm to punish them. Krishna lifted the entire Govardhan hill on the little finger of his left hand and held it aloft for seven days and nights as an umbrella, sheltering all of Braj, its people and cattle, beneath it, until Indra bowed in surrender. It is why Krishna is called Giridhari, the lifter of the mountain.

The Raas Leela: the divine dance

The most sublime of the leelas is the Raas Leela, the divine circular dance of Krishna with Radha and the gopis on the full-moon night of Sharad Purnima. So great was their love that Krishna multiplied himself, dancing with each gopi at once, in a dance that is the very image of the union of the soul with God. It is remembered in the sacred groves of Vrindavan, above all at Nidhivan and Seva Kunj, where it is believed the Raas is danced still each night, so that no one may stay after dark. The great marble Prem Mandir depicts the Raas and other leelas in its beautiful scenes.

Cheer Haran, the flute and the other leelas

Many more leelas colour the land. In the Cheer Haran, Krishna took the garments of the gopis as they bathed in the Yamuna, at Chir Ghat, teaching them to surrender wholly to God. His flute, the Venu Geet, enchanted the cows, the gopis and all of nature, calling them to him. In the Dana Leela at Dan Ghati near Govardhan, he playfully demanded a toll of the gopis; and in the Maan Leela at the Maan Mandir in Barsana, he soothed Radha's loving sulk. Each leela has its place and its own tender meaning.
