Most pilgrims arriving in Braj by train land at Mathura Junction, and one of the first places they wish to reach is Prem Mandir, the dazzling marble temple of love in Vrindavan. The two are close, an easy 40-minute drive apart, and this short hop is simple to make. Here, from one born in Braj who meets pilgrims at this very station, is the complete guide to the Mathura Junction to Prem Mandir distance, the routes, and how to reach the temple. Plan your visit with our Mathura Vrindavan tour packages.

I am Gurudutt, born in Gokul in the Mathura district, guiding pilgrims through Braj since 2018, more than 50,000 of them. I meet travellers at Mathura Junction almost every day and carry them to Prem Mandir and around Vrindavan, so this short journey is one I know intimately. Here is everything you need, told by someone who receives pilgrims at this station: the exact distances and routes, how to reach the temple from the platform, the best way to travel, and what to see when you arrive.

Interestingly, the shortest route via Bhuteshwar Road (12.2 km) takes the same 39 minutes as the longer NH 44 route (17.5 km), because the highway is faster even though it covers more ground. Through town the shorter route can be slow in traffic, so on a busy day the NH 44 is smoother. A driver who knows the roads picks the best line on the day; our Mathura Vrindavan taxi service can meet you at the station and drive you straight there.

Prem Mandir to Mathura Junction distance (the return journey)

The road back, from Prem Mandir to Mathura Junction, is the same distance by the same roads, about 12 to 22 km and roughly 40 minutes. If you are planning the reverse leg, these are the same routes in reverse.

Arriving at Mathura Junction and reaching Prem Mandir

Mathura Junction is the main railhead for Braj, with trains from across India, and it is the natural arrival point for reaching Prem Mandir. From the station, the temple is only about 14 km, roughly 40 minutes by road, so no further train is needed. A prepaid taxi, an app cab or an auto can take you, but the simplest is to have a car meet you at the platform.

  • Mathura Junction is the main railway station for Mathura, Vrindavan and Braj.

  • From the station, Prem Mandir is about 14 km, roughly 40 minutes by road.

  • Taxis, app cabs and autos are available; a pre-arranged car is easiest with luggage.

  • We can meet you on the platform and drive you straight to Prem Mandir and your hotel.

Reaching Prem Mandir by air

There is no airport at Mathura or Vrindavan. If you are arriving by air rather than at Mathura Junction, the nearest major airport is Delhi, about 150 km away, from where you drive about 3 to 3.5 hours to Braj, or take a train to Mathura Junction and continue as above.

  • Nearest major airport: Delhi (Indira Gandhi International), about 150 km from Braj.

  • Coming soon: the new Noida International Airport at Jewar will be closer to Braj.

  • From Delhi, drive to Braj or take a train to Mathura Junction.

  • From Mathura Junction, a car is the easiest way to Prem Mandir.

Mathura Junction to Prem Mandir by bus and auto

Autos, e-rickshaws and shared tempos run from near Mathura Junction towards Vrindavan and the Prem Mandir area, and are the budget way to travel. They are cheap but slower and less comfortable, especially with luggage, so a taxi or a pre-arranged car is far easier for arriving pilgrims.

The best way to travel

For this short hop from the station, a taxi or car is by far the easiest way, especially with luggage, and it can take you straight to Prem Mandir, your hotel and the other temples. Autos are the budget alternative but slower. The table sets them side by side.

Breaking the journey and what to see on the way

This is a short drive with no need for a break, but the route itself passes sacred ground. On the way through Mathura you are near the Bhuteshwar Mahadev temple, the guardian Shiva of the city, and the Krishna Janmabhoomi, the birthplace, both worth a stop if you have time before Vrindavan. Many pilgrims see the birthplace first, then drive on to Prem Mandir and the temples of Vrindavan.

What to see when you arrive

Prem Mandir itself, the marble temple of love built by Jagadguru Kripalu Ji Maharaj, is a vision of white carving and gardens, most beautiful in the evening when it glows with changing lights and the musical fountain plays. All around lie the other great temples of Vrindavan: the beloved Banke Bihari, the continuous kirtan of ISKCON, the mysterious grove of Nidhivan, and the evening Yamuna aarti at Kesi Ghat. Since a car reaches Prem Mandir but not the old-town temples, a driver who drops and collects you saves much walking.

The best time to visit

The cool months of October to March are much the best for the journey and for Vrindavan, while the summer is fierce. Prem Mandir is lovely in the evening for its illumination, so time your arrival for late afternoon if you can. The temples are most alive, though very crowded, during the festivals of Janmashtami, Holi and Kartik. See our best time to visit Mathura Vrindavan guide and the Mathura Vrindavan festivals calendar to plan.

Tips for the journey

  • For the shortest distance take the Bhuteshwar Road route (12.2 km); for a smoother ride in traffic, NH 44.

  • Arrange a car to meet your train at Mathura Junction, especially if you have luggage.

  • Time your arrival at Prem Mandir for the evening, for the illumination and the fountain.

  • See the Krishna Janmabhoomi in Mathura on the way, if you have time.

  • A car reaches Prem Mandir's parking, but the old-town temples need walking, so plan drop-offs.

  • Come October to March for the most pleasant weather.

The honest bit

Honest words on the Mathura Junction to Prem Mandir journey, from one born in Braj. This is a short, easy hop, about 40 minutes, and the only thing to know is that the shortest route by distance winds through the town and can be slow in traffic, so on a busy day the slightly longer NH 44 is smoother, and a local driver will judge which to take. Prem Mandir has its own parking and is easily reached by car, but the old-town temples like Banke Bihari lie in lanes where cars cannot enter, so plan your drop-offs. Distances and times are approximate. If you are arriving late or with luggage, having a car meet your train saves a great deal of trouble; see our Mathura Vrindavan hotels for a stay too.

Why Experience My India is the right choice

I was born in Gokul in the Mathura district, and I meet pilgrims at Mathura Junction and carry them to Prem Mandir and around Vrindavan every day. Guiding since 2018, more than 50,000 pilgrims, 4.5 stars on Google, WhatsApp first, 8 AM to 9 PM daily. We meet you on the platform, take your luggage, drive you straight to Prem Mandir or your hotel, and show you the temples of Vrindavan in the right order, dropping and collecting you where cars cannot go, with no touts and no haggling at the station. One clear fare, and never a charge for free darshan.

Tip from Gurudutt: if your train allows, time your arrival so you reach Prem Mandir in the late afternoon. Drive straight from the station, settle your things, and be at the temple as dusk falls, when the white marble lights up in changing colours and the musical fountain begins to play. To step off the train and, within the hour, stand before the glowing temple of love as night falls over Vrindavan, is a beautiful way to begin your pilgrimage in Braj.

Ghaziabad to Barsana Distance: Routes, Driving Time, Trains and the Best Way to Travel

The distance from Ghaziabad to Barsana is about 148 to 152 km, roughly 2 hours 45 minutes by road. The route via the Eastern Peripheral Expressway and NH 44 is about 152 km in around 2 hours 42 minutes, while NH 44 direct is a little shorter at 148 km. Because Barsana lies west of Mathura, the plain NH 44 route serves well; the Yamuna Expressway is not the natural choice. A car is by far the easiest way. Mathura Parikrama: The Route, Sacred Stops, Timings and How to Do It

Quick answer: the Mathura Parikrama is the sacred circumambulation of Mathura, a walk of about 10 km (6.2 miles) that takes around 3 hours to complete. It is done mainly on Ekadashi, and traditionally begins and ends at Kansa Fort (Kans Qila), passing along the Yamuna ghats, the guardian Shiva temples, the Devi shrines, Potara Kund and the Krishna Janmabhoomi, before returning to Kansa Fort. Entry is free; it is walked barefoot and chanting, ideally before dawn. To walk it with a local guide, call or WhatsApp +91 7302265809.
