1. Krishna Janmabhoomi, the birthplace of Krishna

The heart of Mathura and its most sacred place, is the Krishna Janmabhoomi, the Shri Krishna Janmasthan, the very spot where Krishna was born to Devaki and Vasudeva in the prison of the tyrant Kansa. Here you can see the sacred prison cell (garbha griha) marking the birthplace and the temple complex built around it. To stand at the exact place of the Lord's descent to earth is the supreme experience of a Mathura visit and the reason pilgrims come from all over the world.

2. Dwarkadhish Temple

The grand Dwarkadhish temple, near Vishram Ghat, is Mathura's most important active temple, built in 1814 and run in the Pushtimarg tradition of Vallabhacharya. Its ornate courtyard and the deity of Dwarkadhish (Krishna as the king of Dwarka) draw great crowds, especially at aarti and at festivals like Holi, Janmashtami and Diwali, when it is the city's epicentre of celebration. Though little remains of the old fort, which was later rebuilt and holds traces of a Rajput-era observatory, the site is steeped in the story of Krishna and Kansa and its riverside setting is atmospheric. 5. The Government Museum, Mathura

For those who love history and art, the Government Museum of Mathura is a treasure, one of the finest archaeological museums in India. It is famous for its superb collection of sculpture from the ancient Mathura school of art, which flourished under the Kushan and Gupta empires, including celebrated Buddhist, Jain and Hindu images.
