By road, the distance from Vrindavan to Ujjain is about 610 to 683 km and the drive takes roughly 9 to 11 hours, mostly down the new NE 4 expressway. There are three main ways.

The NE 4 (Delhi-Mumbai) Expressway route is the quickest and smoothest, about 11 hours; the Ujjain-Garoth Rd variant is slower. Vrindavan to Ujjain by train

For so long a journey, the train is a comfortable and popular choice. There is no major station in Vrindavan, so you travel from Mathura Junction, the railhead for Braj, to Ujjain Junction, in around 8 to 11 hours; from Mathura, we can meet you. An overnight train is a restful way to cover the distance.

• How long it takes: roughly 8 to 11 hours depending on the service; overnight trains are ideal.

Vrindavan to Ujjain by air

For this distance, flying is quick if less direct. Neither Vrindavan nor Ujjain has its own major airport; the nearest to Ujjain is Indore (about 55 km) and the nearest to Braj is Delhi (about 150 km). So you would fly Delhi to Indore, about 1.5 hours, then drive to Ujjain, with a drive to Delhi at the Braj end. For most, the train is simpler, but flying via Indore suits those short of time.

This long journey down the NE 4 passes through the heart of India and pilgrims often weave in other holy sites. Ujjain itself is a treasury: beyond Mahakaleshwar, one of the twelve Jyotirlingas and famous for its dawn Bhasma Aarti, there is the Kal Bhairav temple, the Ram Ghat on the Shipra and the Mangalnath and Harsiddhi temples. The cool months of October to March are much the best for the journey and for both Braj and Ujjain, pleasant on the road and at the temples, while the summer is very hot.
