📌 QUICK ANSWER

Agra and Mathura lie about 55 to 60 km apart, roughly 1 to 1.5 hours by road on NH 44 or the Yamuna Expressway. Agra is the Mughal city of the Taj Mahal, Agra Fort and nearby Fatehpur Sikri; Mathura is the birthplace of Krishna, with the Krishna Janmabhoomi, Dwarkadhish and Vishram Ghat and Vrindavan just beyond. Together they make a perfect heritage-and-pilgrimage trip, easily done over two days from Delhi. To arrange it with a car and guide, call or WhatsApp +91 7302265809.

Agra and Mathura sit close together in western Uttar Pradesh, yet they belong to two different worlds: Agra, the city of the Mughals and the immortal Taj Mahal and Mathura, the ancient birthplace of Lord Krishna. To visit them together is to hold both the grandeur of India's Mughal heritage and the depth of its oldest devotion in a single, easy trip. Here, from one born in Braj beside Mathura, is the complete guide to Agra and Mathura and how to combine them. Plan your visit with our Mathura Vrindavan tour packages.

Key takeaways

  • Agra and Mathura lie about 55 to 60 km apart, roughly 1 to 1.5 hours by road.

  • Agra is the Mughal city of the Taj Mahal, Agra Fort and Fatehpur Sikri.

  • Mathura is the ancient birthplace of Krishna, with Vrindavan just beyond.

  • Together they make a perfect heritage-and-pilgrimage trip.

  • The route runs on NH 44 or the Yamuna Expressway; both connect Delhi too.

  • Two days is ideal: one for Agra, one for Mathura and Vrindavan.

I am Gurudutt, born in Gokul in the Mathura district, guiding pilgrims through Braj since 2018, more than 50,000 of them. Many who come to me want to pair the Taj at Agra with the darshan of Krishna at Mathura and it is one of the most rewarding trips in all of North India, the Mughal marvel and the birthplace of the Lord in two easy days. This guide tells you what to see in each city, the distance between them and how to combine them well. Here is the complete guide to Agra and Mathura.

Agra and Mathura at a glance

Here are the two cities side by side, before the detail below.

Mathura

Krishna Janmabhoomi, Dwarkadhish, Vishram Ghat

Agra and Mathura, the Mughal city and Krishna's birthplace.

Agra: the city of the Taj Mahal

Agra was the great capital of the Mughal empire and it holds some of the finest monuments in the world. Its glory is the Taj Mahal, the white-marble mausoleum built by Shah Jahan for his beloved Mumtaz Mahal, one of the wonders of the world and most magical at sunrise. Nearby stands the mighty Agra Fort, the red-sandstone stronghold and palace of the Mughals and about 40 km away lies Fatehpur Sikri, the beautifully preserved abandoned Mughal city of Akbar, with its towering Buland Darwaza. Agra is a feast of heritage and a day is well spent among its marvels. Note that the Taj is closed on Fridays.

Mathura: the birthplace of Krishna

Just an hour away lies a different world: Mathura, one of the seven holy cities of India and the birthplace of Lord Krishna. Its heart is the Krishna Janmabhoomi, built at the very spot of his birth, with the grand Dwarkadhish temple and the evening Yamuna aarti at Vishram Ghat nearby and the ancient Potara Kund beside the birthplace. And just 14 km away lies Vrindavan, the temple town of Krishna's childhood, with the beloved Banke Bihari, the marble Prem Mandir and the kirtan of ISKCON. Mathura and Vrindavan are the depth of India's devotion, as Agra is the height of its heritage.

The distance and how to travel between them

Agra lies about 55 to 60 km southeast of Mathura, roughly 1 to 1.5 hours by road. There are two good routes: NH 44, the old Agra-Delhi highway and the smooth Yamuna Expressway, which also connects both cities to Delhi. Because the two are so close and the sacred sites of Mathura and Vrindavan lie in narrow lanes, a private car with a local driver is by far the best way to combine them, moving freely between the Taj and the temples. Our Mathura Vrindavan taxi service can carry you between Agra, Mathura and Vrindavan with ease.

How to combine Agra and Mathura: the ideal plan

Two days are ideal to combine the two, whether you start from Delhi, Agra or Mathura. Here is the plan I recommend.

Day

Focus

Day 1

Agra: the Taj Mahal at sunrise, Agra Fort and Fatehpur Sikri on the way

Day 2

Mathura and Vrindavan: the Krishna Janmabhoomi, Dwarkadhish, Banke Bihari and Prem Mandir

A two-day plan combining Agra and Mathura. Add a day for Govardhan or the wider Braj.

Many travellers come from Delhi, see Agra and the Taj on the first day and Mathura and Vrindavan on the second or the reverse, since both cities sit on the same expressway. With a third day you can add Govardhan and the wider Braj. This heritage-and-pilgrimage combination is so popular that it forms the heart of our tour packages.

The best time to visit

The cool months of October to March are much the best for both cities, pleasant for the Taj at sunrise and for the temples alike, while the summer of April to June is fierce. Avoid Fridays for the Taj, which is closed then. Mathura and Vrindavan are gloriously alive, though very crowded, during the festivals of Janmashtami, Holi and Diwali. See our best time to visit Mathura Vrindavan guide and the Mathura Vrindavan festivals calendar to plan and for a stay, our Mathura Vrindavan hotels desk can help.

Tips for combining Agra and Mathura

  • Give one day to Agra and one to Mathura and Vrindavan; add a third for Govardhan.

  • See the Taj Mahal at sunrise for the finest light and the smallest crowds.

  • Avoid Fridays at the Taj, when it is closed.

  • Take NH 44 or the Yamuna Expressway between the two; both are good roads.

  • Travel light for the Janmabhoomi and Banke Bihari, where bags are restricted.

  • Come October to March and beware touts at both the monuments and the temples.

The honest bit

Honest words from one born beside Mathura. Combining Agra and Mathura is one of the easiest and most rewarding trips in North India: the two are close, the roads good and together they give you both the Taj and the darshan of Krishna. But they are two very different experiences, the polished, ticketed grandeur of the Mughal monuments and the crowded, living devotion of the temple towns, so come ready for both moods. Give each city its own day; a single rushed day for both leaves you seeing neither well. Distances are approximate, the Taj is closed on Fridays and touts work both the monuments and the temples, so a local hand helps. Planned over two unhurried days, Agra and Mathura are a perfect pairing of India's heritage and its heart.

Why Experience My India is the right choice

I was born in Gokul in the Mathura district and I arrange Agra-and-Mathura trips every week. Guiding since 2018, more than 50,000 pilgrims, 4.5 stars on Google, WhatsApp first, 8 AM to 9 PM daily. We meet you at Delhi, Agra or Mathura, drive you between the Taj and the temples, plan the darshan and the monuments in the right order and at the right hours, walk you into the old-town temples, arrange any seva and add Vrindavan and Govardhan as you wish, with no touts. One clear fare and never a charge for free darshan.

Tip from Gurudutt: see the Taj at first light on one morning and the Krishna Janmabhoomi at first light on the next. To stand before the white marble as the sun rises over the Yamuna and then, a day later, before the birthplace of the Lord in the same soft dawn, is to feel the two souls of this land, its worldly wonder and its divine heart, in two unforgettable mornings. That is the true way to see Agra and Mathura.

"Experience My India made it easy for us to experience two very different sides of India in one trip. We visited the Taj Mahal and Agra Fort before heading towards Mathura and Vrindavan. Our local guide was friendly and explained the religious places respectfully, while the driver managed the journey very well. Communication was clear throughout, and the whole trip was comfortable and well organised."

"I travelled with my parents and wanted a comfortable trip covering both Agra and Mathura. The team at Experience My India suggested a very practical route and took care of the complete transport. The Taj Mahal at sunrise was amazing, while the visit to Krishna Janmabhoomi and evening aarti at Vishram Ghat gave the trip a completely different feeling. Great driver and very helpful service."

"This was a beautiful combination of history and spirituality. Experience My India arranged our Agra, Mathura and Vrindavan sightseeing very professionally. Our guide explained the history of the Taj Mahal and later shared the stories connected with Krishna Janmabhoomi and the temples. We never felt rushed and really appreciated how well the itinerary was planned around temple timings."

Ghaziabad to Barsana Distance: Routes, Driving Time, Trains and the Best Way to Travel

The distance from Ghaziabad to Barsana is about 148 to 152 km, roughly 2 hours 45 minutes by road. The route via the Eastern Peripheral Expressway and NH 44 is about 152 km in around 2 hours 42 minutes, while NH 44 direct is a little shorter at 148 km.
