Dehradun, the capital of Uttarakhand and gateway to the Himalayan pilgrimages and Vrindavan, the temple town of Krishna, sit a comfortable six-hour drive apart, about 370 km down through the plains. Many pilgrims weave the two together, the shrines of Uttarakhand, Haridwar and Rishikesh, with the darshan of Krishna in Braj. Here, from one born in Braj, is the complete guide to the Dehradun to Vrindavan distance, the routes both ways and the best way to travel. Plan your visit with our Mathura Vrindavan tour packages.

Key takeaways

  • Dehradun to Vrindavan is about 363 to 383 km, roughly 6 hours by road.

  • The fastest route uses NH 344G and the Yamuna Expressway, about 370 km in around 5 hours 43 minutes.

  • The route passes near Haridwar and Rishikesh, a natural pilgrimage pairing.

  • A car is the most flexible; the train is a comfortable alternative.

  • It is a comfortable half-day's drive down from the hills to the plains.

  • Mathura lies just before Vrindavan, only 14 km on, a natural stop.

I am Gurudutt, born in Gokul in the Mathura district, guiding pilgrims through Braj since 2018, more than 50,000 of them. Many who come to us travel from Dehradun and Uttarakhand, often after the darshan of Haridwar, Rishikesh or the Char Dham, drawn on to the land of Krishna. Here is everything you need, told by someone who receives these travellers: the exact distances and routes both ways, the train and other options, the best way to travel and the darshan at the end.

Dehradun to Vrindavan distance and driving routes

By road, the distance from Dehradun to Vrindavan is about 363 to 383 km and the drive takes roughly 6 hours, down NH 344G and onto the plains via the expressways. There are three main ways.

The NH 344G and Yamuna Expressway route is the quickest, coming down from the hills and onto the fast expressway for the run into Braj; the routes are all close in time. Because the way passes near Haridwar and Rishikesh, many pause there. On the day, live traffic decides the smoothest line and a car that knows the roads picks it; our Mathura Vrindavan taxi service can carry you the whole way.

Vrindavan to Dehradun distance (the return journey)

The road back, from Vrindavan to Dehradun, is much the same, about 363 to 382 km and 5.5 to 6.5 hours. If you are planning the reverse leg, these are the main routes.

Dehradun to Vrindavan by train

The train is a comfortable option. There is no major station in Vrindavan, so you travel to Mathura Junction, the railhead for Braj and drive the last 14 km. Trains run from Dehradun towards Mathura, some direct, taking around 7 to 9 hours; from Mathura, we can meet you. For most, a car is quicker and more flexible over this distance.

  • Where to board: trains run from Dehradun towards Mathura Junction.

  • How long it takes: roughly 7 to 9 hours; check for a convenient service.

  • The last leg: from Mathura Junction, Vrindavan is about 14 km, around 30 minutes.

  • Book ahead: reserve your Dehradun to Mathura ticket in advance in the tourist season.

Dehradun to Vrindavan by air

For this distance, flying makes little sense. Dehradun has an airport (Jolly Grant), but the nearest airport to Braj is Delhi, about 150 km on the far side, so you would drive in any case. A car or the train between Dehradun and Braj is far simpler than any flight.

  • Dehradun has an airport (Jolly Grant) with flights to Delhi and other cities.

  • Nearest airport to Braj: Delhi, about 150 km away.

  • Coming soon: the new Noida International Airport at Jewar will serve the region.

  • For the Dehradun to Vrindavan journey itself, a car or the train is the answer.

Dehradun to Vrindavan by bus

Buses run from Dehradun towards Delhi and on towards Mathura, taking around 7 to 8 hours and are the budget option. But they are slower and less comfortable over this distance, so a car or the train is far easier for most travellers.

The best way to travel

The right choice depends on your time and budget. A private car is the most flexible, taking you door to door and letting you pause at Haridwar or Rishikesh; the train to Mathura is a comfortable alternative; and the bus is the cheapest but slowest. The table sets them side by side.

A quick comparison. For Dehradun to Braj, a private car is most flexible.

Breaking the journey and what to see on the way

The great feature of this route is that it passes near Haridwar and Rishikesh, two of the holiest places on the Ganga, so many pilgrims break the journey there, weaving the Ganga aarti at Haryana and the ashrams of Rishikesh into a grand pilgrimage that ends at Krishna's Braj. Mathura, the birthplace of Krishna, lies just before Vrindavan, so you may take the Krishna Janmabhoomi and drive on. From the Himalayan foothills and the Ganga to the Yamuna and Krishna's land, it is a beautiful journey between the two great rivers.

What to see when you arrive

Once in Braj, the darshans begin. In Vrindavan, see the beloved Banke Bihari temple, the marble Prem Mandir with its evening light show, the kirtan of ISKCON and the evening Yamuna aarti at Kesi Ghat. In nearby Mathura, see the Dwarkadhish temple and Vishram Ghat. With the two towns only 14 km apart, you can see the best of both; for an overnight stay, see our Mathura Vrindavan hotels.

The best time to visit

The cool months of October to March are much the best for the journey and for Braj, pleasant on the road and at the temples, while the summer is hot on the plains. Note that December and January can bring dense fog on the northern plains and expressway, which slows the drive. Braj is gloriously alive, though very crowded, during Janmashtami, Holi and Diwali. See our best time to visit Mathura Vrindavan guide and the Mathura Vrindavan festivals calendar.

Tips for the journey

  • Take the NH 344G and Yamuna Expressway route; it is the quickest.

  • Pair Haridwar and Rishikesh on the way for a river-to-river pilgrimage.

  • The train from Dehradun to Mathura is a comfortable alternative to driving.

  • See both towns; Vrindavan is only 14 km beyond Mathura.

  • Avoid the December-January fog on the plains and expressway if you can or allow extra time.

  • Come October to March for the most pleasant weather.

The honest bit

Honest words on the Dehradun to Vrindavan journey, from one born in Braj. This is a comfortable half-day drive of about 370 km, coming down from the hills to the plains and Krishna's land. The routes are all close in time, but the NH 344G and Yamuna Expressway line is the smoothest and quickest. The train from Dehradun is comfortable too, though a car is more flexible over this distance. The great joy of this route is pairing the Ganga at Haridwar and Rishikesh with the Yamuna at Braj, a pilgrimage between India's two holiest rivers. Beware the winter fog on the plains. Distances and times are approximate.

Why Experience My India is the right choice

I was born in Gokul in the Mathura district and I welcome travellers from Dehradun and Uttarakhand every week, many fresh from the Ganga at Haridwar or Rishikesh. Guiding since 2018, more than 50,000 pilgrims, 4.5 stars on Google, WhatsApp first, 8 AM to 9 PM daily. Whether you drive or train in, we meet you at Mathura Junction or your doorstep, carry you around the temples of Vrindavan and Mathura in the right order, walk you into the old-town temples cars cannot reach and arrange any seva, with no touts. One clear fare and never a charge for free darshan.

Tip from Gurudutt: let your journey run from one holy river to another. Take the darshan and the Ganga aarti at Haridwar or Rishikesh in the morning, then drive down through the plains to Braj, arriving in time for the evening Yamuna aarti at Kesi Ghat, on the banks of Krishna's own river. To bathe in the Ganga in the hills and bow to the Yamuna in Krishna's land in a single journey is a rare and beautiful pilgrimage, from Ganga to Yamuna, from the Himalayas to the heart of Braj.
