Breaking the journey and what to see on the way
The great feature of this route is that it passes near Haridwar and Rishikesh, two of the holiest places on the Ganga, so many pilgrims break the journey there, weaving the Ganga aarti at Haryana and the ashrams of Rishikesh into a grand pilgrimage that ends at Krishna's Braj. Mathura, the birthplace of Krishna, lies just before Vrindavan, so you may take the Krishna Janmabhoomi and drive on. From the Himalayan foothills and the Ganga to the Yamuna and Krishna's land, it is a beautiful journey between the two great rivers.
What to see when you arrive
Once in Braj, the darshans begin. In Vrindavan, see the beloved Banke Bihari temple, the marble Prem Mandir with its evening light show, the kirtan of ISKCON and the evening Yamuna aarti at Kesi Ghat. In nearby Mathura, see the Dwarkadhish temple and Vishram Ghat. With the two towns only 14 km apart, you can see the best of both; for an overnight stay, see our Mathura Vrindavan hotels.
The best time to visit
The cool months of October to March are much the best for the journey and for Braj, pleasant on the road and at the temples, while the summer is hot on the plains. Note that December and January can bring dense fog on the northern plains and expressway, which slows the drive. Braj is gloriously alive, though very crowded, during Janmashtami, Holi and Diwali.
