What is Govardhan Puja?

Govardhan Puja is the festival that honours the Govardhan hill and, through it, Lord Krishna, celebrated just after Diwali. Its other name, Annakut, means a mountain of food, for on this day devotees offer a vast heap of many dishes to the Lord, in gratitude for the food and shelter that nature provides. It marks Krishna's great act of lifting Govardhan hill, and it teaches that the divine is present in the earth, the hills, the rivers and the cattle that sustain life, and is honoured through devotion and gratitude rather than fear. It is a festival of thanksgiving, of nature, and of Krishna's loving protection of his people.

The legend: Krishna lifts the Govardhan hill

The story is one of the most beloved in all of Krishna's life. The people of Braj used to worship Indra, the king of the gods, for the rains. But the young Krishna told them that it was not Indra but the Govardhan hill and the land itself, which gave grass to their cattle and shelter to them all, that truly deserved their worship, and he urged them to honour Govardhan instead. Enraged at losing his worship, the proud Indra sent down terrible storms and floods to destroy Braj. Then Krishna, a mere child, lifted the entire Govardhan hill upon the little finger of his left hand, and held it aloft like a great umbrella, and all the people and cattle of Braj sheltered beneath it, safe and dry, for seven days and seven nights, until Indra, humbled, withdrew his storms and bowed before the Lord. So Krishna taught the world to worship Govardhan, and the festival has been kept ever since.
