The two rules that decide the day

Before the plan, understand the two facts that make or break this day, because most one-day plans ignore them and waste half the time.

• See the Taj at sunrise. The Taj Mahal is at its most beautiful and least crowded at dawn and doing it first frees the rest of the day for Braj. It is also closed on Fridays.

• The temples close at midday. The Krishna Janmabhoomi and Banke Bihari, among others, close through the middle of the day (roughly 12 to 4 pm), so you do Mathura in the morning and Vrindavan's evening temples later, resting through the closure.

The same-day plan, hour by hour

Here is the plan that works, assuming you start at or near Agra (see the note below on starting from Delhi or Braj). Timings are a guide; a local driver adjusts to the day.

• You will likely skip: Agra Fort and Fatehpur Sikri, the deeper Vrindavan temples like Radha Raman and Nidhivan and the evening Yamuna aarti.

• You will not reach: Govardhan, Barsana, Nandgaon or Gokul, the wider Braj, which need their own time.

• You cannot linger: this is a day of highlights at pace, not of slow, unhurried darshan.

A private car is essential for this day; there is no other way to link the Taj and the temples on time and a car can wait for you where the old-town lanes cannot be driven. Come in the cool months of October to March, when the early start is bearable and the Taj at sunrise is glorious; avoid Fridays, when the Taj is closed and the great festival crowds unless the festival is the point. The whole day depends on the Taj at sunrise and on working around the midday temple closure, so an early start and a driver who knows the timings are everything.
