Kurukshetra, the sacred field where Krishna spoke the Bhagavad Gita to Arjuna and Vrindavan, the temple town of his childhood, are joined by a beautiful thread of devotion and by an easy five-hour drive of about 320 km. To travel from the land of the Gita to the land of Krishna's leelas is a pilgrimage in itself. Here, from one born in Braj, is the complete guide to the Kurukshetra to Vrindavan distance, the routes both ways and the best way to travel. Plan your visit with our Mathura Vrindavan tour packages.

I am Gurudutt, born in Gokul in the Mathura district, guiding pilgrims through Braj since 2018, more than 50,000 of them. Many who come to us travel from Kurukshetra and Haryana, drawn from the field of the Gita to the land of Krishna's childhood, a most fitting journey. Here is everything you need, told by someone who receives these travellers: the exact distances and routes both ways, the train and other options, the best way to travel and the darshan at the end.

Kurukshetra to Vrindavan distance and driving routes

By road, the distance from Kurukshetra to Vrindavan is about 315 to 354 km and the drive takes roughly 5 hours, down NH 44 and around Delhi on the expressways. There are three main ways.

The NH 44 and Yamuna Expressway route is the quickest, coming down NH 44 and using the peripheral and Yamuna expressways to skirt the Delhi traffic; the routes are close in time. The peripheral expressways are the key to avoiding the city. On the day, live traffic decides the smoothest line and a car that knows the roads picks it; our Mathura Vrindavan taxi service can carry you the whole way and on to Vrindavan.

Vrindavan to Kurukshetra distance (the return journey)

The road back, from Vrindavan to Kurukshetra, is much the same, about 315 to 354 km and 5 to 5.5 hours. If you are planning the reverse leg, these are the main routes.

Kurukshetra to Vrindavan by train

The train is a comfortable option, as Kurukshetra is a junction on the main Delhi line. There is no major station in Vrindavan, so you travel to Mathura Junction, the railhead for Braj and drive the last 14 km to Vrindavan. Trains run via the Delhi side, taking around 5 to 7 hours; from Mathura, we can meet you.

  • Where to board: trains run from Kurukshetra Junction towards Mathura Junction, usually via Delhi.

  • How long it takes: roughly 5 to 7 hours depending on the service.

  • The last leg: from Mathura Junction, Vrindavan is about 14 km, around 30 minutes.

  • Book ahead: reserve your Kurukshetra to Mathura ticket in advance in the tourist season.

Kurukshetra to Vrindavan by air

For this distance, flying makes little sense. Kurukshetra has no airport; the nearest major one is Delhi, roughly between the two, so you would drive in any case. A car or the train between Kurukshetra and Braj is far simpler than any flight.

  • Kurukshetra has no airport.

  • Nearest major airport: Delhi, roughly between Kurukshetra and Braj.

  • Coming soon: the new Noida International Airport at Jewar will be near Braj.

  • For the Kurukshetra to Vrindavan journey itself, a car or the train is the answer.

Kurukshetra to Vrindavan by bus

Buses run from Kurukshetra towards Delhi and on towards Mathura, taking around 6 to 7 hours and are the budget option. But they are slower and less comfortable over this distance, so a car or the train is far easier for most travellers.

The best way to travel

The right choice depends on your time and budget. A private car is the most flexible, taking you door to door and around the Delhi traffic; the train to Mathura is a comfortable alternative; and the bus is the cheapest but slowest. The table sets them side by side.

A quick comparison. For Kurukshetra to Braj, a car or the train is easiest.

Breaking the journey and what to see on the way

This is a comfortable half-day drive and the great feature is the pilgrimage it makes: from Kurukshetra, the very field where Krishna spoke the Bhagavad Gita to Arjuna, to Braj, the land where he lived his childhood leelas. Delhi lies between the two, so some pause there. Mathura, the birthplace of Krishna, lies just before Vrindavan, so you may take the Krishna Janmabhoomi and drive on. To travel from where Krishna gave the world its greatest teaching to where he played as a child is a deeply moving journey through his story.

What to see when you arrive

Once in Braj, the darshans begin. In Vrindavan, see the beloved Banke Bihari temple, the marble Prem Mandir with its evening light show, the kirtan of ISKCON and the evening Yamuna aarti at Kesi Ghat. In nearby Mathura, see the Dwarkadhish temple and the Vishram Ghat. With the two towns only 14 km apart, you can see the best of both; for an overnight stay, see our Mathura Vrindavan hotels.

The best time to visit

The cool months of October to March are much the best for the journey and for Braj, pleasant on the road and at the temples, while the summer is hot. Note that December and January can bring dense fog on the northern plains and expressway, which slows the drive. Braj is gloriously alive, though very crowded, during Janmashtami, Holi and Diwali; and Kurukshetra keeps its great Gita Jayanti festival in Margashirsha (November-December). See our best time to visit Mathura Vrindavan guide and the Mathura Vrindavan festivals calendar.

Tips for the journey

  • Take the NH 44 and Yamuna Expressway route, using the peripheral expressways to skirt Delhi.

  • The train from Kurukshetra to Mathura is a comfortable alternative to driving.

  • See both towns; Vrindavan is only 14 km beyond Mathura.

  • Make it a Krishna pilgrimage: from the Gita's field to the land of his leelas.

  • Avoid the December-January fog on the plains and expressway if you can or allow extra time.

  • Come October to March for the most pleasant weather.

The honest bit

Honest words on the Kurukshetra to Vrindavan journey, from one born in Braj. This is a comfortable half-day drive of about 320 km and a deeply fitting one, from the field where Krishna spoke the Gita to the land where he was a child. The routes are close in time; the key is to use the peripheral and Yamuna expressways to skirt the Delhi traffic, which a local driver knows. The train from Kurukshetra, via Delhi, is comfortable too. Vrindavan is only 14 km beyond Mathura, so see both. Beware the winter fog on the plains. Distances and times are approximate. Planned well, this is one of the more meaningful journeys to Braj.

Why Experience My India is the right choice

I was born in Gokul in the Mathura district and I welcome travellers from Kurukshetra and Haryana every week, drawn from the Gita's field to Krishna's land. Guiding since 2018, more than 50,000 pilgrims, 4.5 stars on Google, WhatsApp first, 8 AM to 9 PM daily. Whether you drive or train in, we meet you at Mathura Junction or your doorstep, carry you around the temples of Vrindavan and Mathura in the right order, walk you into the old-town temples cars cannot reach and arrange any seva, with no touts. One clear fare and never a charge for free darshan.

Tip from Gurudutt: let this journey be a pilgrimage through Krishna himself. At Kurukshetra, you stand where he revealed the Bhagavad Gita, the highest teaching, to Arjuna; in Braj, you walk where he lived it out as a child, in love and play. To travel from his greatest word to his tenderest deeds, from the field of the Gita to the groves of Vrindavan, is to hold the whole of Krishna in a single journey. Come to Braj for the dawn darshan of Banke Bihari and feel that thread of devotion complete.
