📌 QUICK ANSWER

The distance from Kolkata to Vrindavan is about 1,362 to 1,445 km, roughly 22 to 29 hours by road via NH 19, the Grand Trunk Road. This is a very long journey, effectively a two-day drive, so nearly all travellers prefer to fly to Delhi, about 2 to 2.5 hours, then drive 3 to 3.5 hours to Braj or take a train, as Kolkata has excellent rail links to Mathura. To arrange a car and your Vrindavan darshan, call or WhatsApp +91 7302265809.

Kolkata, the great city of eastern India and Vrindavan, the temple town of Krishna, lie far apart, over 1,360 km along the old Grand Trunk Road. Yet Bengal's deep devotion to Krishna, from the tradition of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu himself, draws many to his land and there are comfortable ways to make the journey. Here, from one born in Braj, is the complete guide to the Kolkata to Vrindavan distance, the routes both ways and the best way to travel. Plan your visit with our Mathura Vrindavan tour packages.

  • The fastest route runs along NH 19, the Grand Trunk Road, about 1,363 km in around 22.5 hours.

  • The route passes near Varanasi and Prayagraj, a natural pilgrimage pairing.

I am Gurudutt, born in Gokul in the Mathura district, guiding pilgrims through Braj since 2018, more than 50,000 of them. Many who come to us travel from Kolkata and Bengal, whose devotion to Krishna runs deep through the tradition of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, who himself came to Vrindavan. Here is everything you need, told by someone who receives these travellers: the exact distances and routes both ways, the flight and train options, the best way to travel over such a long distance and the last leg into Vrindavan.

Kolkata to Vrindavan distance and driving routes

By road, the distance from Kolkata to Vrindavan is about 1,362 to 1,445 km and the drive takes roughly 22 to 29 hours depending on the route, along the old Grand Trunk Road through Bihar and Uttar Pradesh. There are three main ways, but all are very long.

The NH 19 route, the historic Grand Trunk Road, is the shortest and quickest, but even so it is a journey of some 23 hours, far too long for one stretch. If you drive, it must be split over two days with an overnight stop; but honestly, for so long a distance, flying is far better. A car that knows the roads can carry you or meet you for the last leg; our Mathura Vrindavan taxi service can help.

Vrindavan to Kolkata distance (the return journey)

The road back, from Vrindavan to Kolkata, is much the same, about 1,362 to 1,412 km and 21.5 to 24 hours. If you are planning the reverse leg, these are the main routes.

Kolkata to Vrindavan by train

For so long a journey, the train is a comfortable and popular choice and Kolkata has excellent rail links to the north. There is no major station in Vrindavan, so you travel to Mathura Junction, the railhead for Braj and drive the last 14 km. Trains run from Howrah and Sealdah towards Mathura, taking around 20 to 26 hours, so a good overnight-and-day train is the way; from Mathura, we can meet you.

  • Where to board: trains run from Howrah or Sealdah towards Mathura Junction.

  • How long it takes: roughly 20 to 26 hours; choose a good overnight-and-day train.

  • The last leg: from Mathura Junction, Vrindavan is about 14 km, around 30 minutes.

  • Book ahead: reserve your Kolkata to Mathura ticket well in advance, especially in festival season.

Kolkata to Vrindavan by air

For this distance, flying is by far the best and most popular way. Kolkata has a major international airport with frequent flights to Delhi and the nearest airport to Braj is Delhi, about 150 km away. A flight from Kolkata to Delhi, about 2 to 2.5 hours, then a 3 to 3.5 hour drive to Vrindavan, is vastly quicker than the 22-hour road journey. For almost all travellers from Kolkata, flying via Delhi is the way.

  • Nearest airport to Braj: Delhi, about 150 km away.

  • Fly Kolkata to Delhi (about 2 to 2.5 hours), then drive 3 to 3.5 hours to Vrindavan.

  • Flying via Delhi is vastly quicker than the long road journey; it is the clear choice.

Kolkata to Vrindavan by bus

Buses run from Kolkata towards the north, taking well over a day and are the budget option. But they are extremely long and tiring over such a distance, so a flight or at least a train, is far easier and worth the extra cost for almost all travellers.

The best way to travel

Over this distance, the choice is clear: flying is by far the best. Flying to Delhi and driving on is quickest by far; a train is a comfortable, good-value alternative; a private car is a two-day drive and only for those who wish to drive; and the bus is the cheapest but exhausting. The table sets them side by side.

A quick comparison. Over this distance, flying via Delhi is clearly the best.

Breaking the journey and what to see on the way

The great feature of this eastern route is that it passes close to Varanasi and Prayagraj, two of the holiest cities of India, so many pilgrims break the journey there, weaving Kashi and the Sangam into a grand pilgrimage that ends in Krishna's Braj. If you drive, this vast journey must be split over two days with an overnight stop and Varanasi or Prayagraj make deeply rewarding ones. Agra, with the Taj, lies near the western end. For so long a distance, flying spares you the road; but pairing Kashi and Braj is a beautiful pilgrimage in itself.

What to see when you arrive

Once in Vrindavan, the darshans begin. Bengal's own tradition of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu is woven into the town, above all at the old Goswami temples. Do not miss the beloved Banke Bihari temple, the grand Prem Mandir with its evening light show, the kirtan of ISKCON and the historic Radha Raman temple of the Gaudiya tradition, with the evening Yamuna aarti at Kesi Ghat. In nearby Mathura, see the Krishna Janmabhoomi, the birthplace. After a long journey, an overnight stay lets you take the darshan unhurried; see our Mathura Vrindavan hotels.

The best time to visit

The cool months of October to March are much the best for the journey and for Braj, pleasant on the road and at the temples, while the summer is very hot. If you travel in the festival season, around Janmashtami, Radhashtami, Diwali or Holi, expect the town to be joyful but crowded and book ahead. See our best time to visit Mathura Vrindavan guide and the Mathura Vrindavan festivals calendar for the seasons in full.

Tips for the journey

  • For this distance, fly Kolkata to Delhi and drive 3 to 3.5 hours to Braj; it is by far the quickest.

  • A train from Howrah or Sealdah to Mathura Junction is a comfortable alternative to driving.

  • If you drive, take NH 19, the Grand Trunk Road and split it over two days.

  • Pair Varanasi and Prayagraj on the way for a grand pilgrimage ending in Braj.

  • Book flights, trains and hotels well ahead, especially in festival season.

  • Come October to March for the most pleasant weather.

The honest bit

Honest words on the Kolkata to Vrindavan journey, from one born in Braj. Let me be very plain: this is a huge distance, over 1,360 km and 22 hours or more by road, effectively a two-day drive, so please do not attempt to drive it in one go. For almost every traveller from Kolkata, flying to Delhi and driving the last stretch or taking a train, is far easier and the sensible choice. The one lovely exception is if you wish to make a pilgrimage of it and take in Varanasi and Prayagraj on the way, which the eastern route allows beautifully. Distances and times are approximate. For the last leg and once you are here, a car that knows the town saves you time and touts; an early booking secures a good stay.

Why Experience My India is the right choice

I was born in Gokul in the Mathura district and I welcome travellers from Kolkata and Bengal every week, whose bond with Krishna, through Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, is close to Vrindavan's own heart. Guiding since 2018, more than 50,000 pilgrims, 4.5 stars on Google, WhatsApp first, 8 AM to 9 PM daily. We meet you at Delhi airport, Mathura Junction or your doorstep, carry you around the temples in the right order, including the Gaudiya shrines dear to Bengal and, if you wish, add Agra and the Taj, with the stories told on the ground and no touts. One clear fare and never a charge for free darshan.

Tip from Gurudutt: for the people of Bengal, coming to Vrindavan is a homecoming, for it was your own Chaitanya Mahaprabhu who rediscovered this holy land. Fly to Delhi and let us bring you to Braj the same day and visit the old Gaudiya Goswami temples, Radha Raman and the rest, where the tradition Chaitanya began still lives. Chant 'Radhe Radhe' at Banke Bihari, sit at the Yamuna aarti and you will feel Bengal's devotion come home to its source in the land of Krishna.
