Mehandipur Balaji, the famous temple of Lord Hanuman in the Dausa district of Rajasthan, revered by many who seek relief from troubles and negative forces, is an easy half-day drive from Mathura, the birthplace of Krishna. Many pilgrims pair the two, the darshan of Krishna in Braj and of Balaji in Rajasthan, on the same journey. Here, from one born in Braj, is the complete guide to the Mathura to Mehandipur Balaji distance, the routes and the best way to travel. Plan your visit with our Mathura Vrindavan tour packages.

Key takeaways

  • Mathura to Mehandipur Balaji is about 120 to 128 km, roughly 2 hours 40 minutes by road.

  • The quickest route uses the Mathura-Bharatpur Road and NH 21, about 120 km.

  • Mehandipur Balaji is a famous Hanuman (Balaji) temple in the Dausa district of Rajasthan.

  • It lies southwest of Mathura, towards Bharatpur and Dausa, not on the Yamuna Expressway.

  • A private car is the easiest way, as the temple is rural with patchy public transport.

  • Many pilgrims pair Krishna's Mathura with Balaji's darshan on the same trip.

I am Gurudutt, born in Gokul in the Mathura district, guiding pilgrims through Braj since 2018, more than 50,000 of them. Many who come to us for the darshan of Krishna also wish to visit Mehandipur Balaji in Rajasthan and we arrange the journey often. Here is everything you need, told by someone who knows these roads: the exact distances and routes both ways, the train and other options, the best way to travel and how to combine the two.

Mathura to Mehandipur Balaji distance and driving routes

By road, the distance from Mathura to Mehandipur Balaji is about 120 to 128 km and the drive takes roughly 2 hours 40 minutes to 3 hours. The route heads southwest from Mathura towards Bharatpur and on into the Dausa district of Rajasthan, mainly on NH 21. There are three main ways.

The route via the Mathura-Bharatpur Road and NH 21 is the quickest and shortest and the one I recommend. The routes are all comparable, running through Bharatpur into Rajasthan. On the day, live traffic decides the smoothest line and a car that knows the roads picks it; our Mathura Vrindavan taxi service can carry you the whole way.

Mehandipur Balaji to Mathura distance (the return journey)

The road back is much the same, about 120 to 128 km and 2 hours 50 minutes to 3 hours 15 minutes. If you are planning the reverse leg, these are the main routes.

Mehandipur Balaji to Mathura road routes. Approximate; the NH 21 and Mathura-Bharatpur route is quickest.

Mathura to Mehandipur Balaji by train

The train is possible but less direct than the road. Mehandipur Balaji has no station of its own; the nearest railheads are at Bandikui or Dausa, some way off, reached by changing trains, while Mathura Junction is the railhead at the Braj end. For this journey, a car is far simpler than the train.

  • Mehandipur Balaji has no railway station of its own.

  • Nearest railheads: Bandikui or Dausa, reached by changing trains.

  • At the Braj end, Mathura Junction is the main railhead.

  • For this rural temple, a car is far simpler than the train.

Mathura to Mehandipur Balaji by air

For this distance, flying makes little sense. There is no airport near Mehandipur Balaji; the nearest major ones are Delhi (about 150 km from Mathura) and Jaipur (about 100 km from the temple) and from either you would drive. A car from Mathura is by far the simplest way.

  • Nearest major airports: Delhi (about 150 km from Mathura) and Jaipur (about 100 km from the temple).

  • From either airport, the journey to the temple is by road.

  • Coming soon: the new Noida International Airport at Jewar will serve the Braj side.

  • For the Mathura to Mehandipur Balaji journey itself, a car is the answer.

Mathura to Mehandipur Balaji by bus

Buses are the budget option. State and private buses run from Mathura and Bharatpur towards Mehandipur Balaji and Dausa, taking around 3.5 to 4 hours with changes and are cheap. But they are slower and less direct for a rural temple, so a car is far more comfortable, especially for a same-day return.

The best way to travel

The right choice depends on your time and budget. A private car is the most flexible and comfortable, taking you door to door and back and letting you combine Krishna's Mathura with Balaji's darshan; a train is indirect for this route; and the bus is the cheapest but the slowest. The table sets them side by side.

A quick comparison. For Mathura to Mehandipur Balaji, a private car is clearly best.

Breaking the journey and what to see on the way

The drive is a comfortable half-day through Bharatpur and into rural Rajasthan, with roadside dhabas for chai and food along the way, so a short break is all you need. Bharatpur, with its famous Keoladeo bird sanctuary, lies on the route and can be paused for those with time. Many pilgrims combine the Balaji darshan with the temples of Braj, seeing Krishna's Mathura and Vrindavan on one part of the trip and Balaji on another.

What to see when you arrive

At the Braj end, the darshan of Krishna awaits: the Krishna Janmabhoomi, the very birthplace of the Lord, the grand Dwarkadhish temple and the evening Yamuna aarti at Vishram Ghat. Just beyond lies Vrindavan, with the beloved Banke Bihari and the marble Prem Mandir. For lovers of Hanuman, Braj has its own beloved Hanuman shrines too, so you may take Hanuman's darshan on both ends of the journey.

The best time to visit

The cool months of October to March are much the best for the journey and for both Braj and Rajasthan, while the summer is fierce. Mehandipur Balaji is busiest on Tuesdays and Saturdays, the days of Hanuman and during its melas, so plan around the crowds. In Braj, the festivals of Janmashtami, Holi and Kartik are glorious but crowded. See our best time to visit Mathura Vrindavan guide and the Mathura Vrindavan festivals calendar to plan.

Tips for the journey

  • Take the Mathura-Bharatpur Road and NH 21 route; it is the shortest and quickest.

  • Go by car; the temple is rural and public transport is patchy.

  • Mehandipur Balaji is busiest on Tuesdays and Saturdays; plan for crowds on those days.

  • Observe the temple's own customs and rules respectfully during your darshan.

  • Pause at Bharatpur's Keoladeo bird sanctuary on the way if you have time.

  • Come October to March for the most pleasant weather; carry water for the drive.

The honest bit

Honest words on the Mathura to Mehandipur Balaji journey, from one born in Braj. This is a comfortable half-day drive southwest into Rajasthan and easy to combine with the darshan of Krishna in Braj. A few honest points: Mehandipur Balaji is a temple of its own strong traditions, known to many for rituals concerning relief from troubles and negative forces, so go respectfully and follow the temple's own customs and any guidance there. It is a rural place, so a car is far better than public transport and Tuesdays and Saturdays are very crowded. Distances and times are approximate. We are a Braj operator, so we arrange the journey and the car, while the temple's own rituals are conducted by its priests. If you would rather stay overnight in Braj, see our Mathura Vrindavan hotels.

Why Experience My India is the right choice

I was born in Gokul in the Mathura district and we arrange journeys from Braj to Mehandipur Balaji and back regularly. Guiding since 2018, more than 50,000 pilgrims, 4.5 stars on Google, WhatsApp first, 8 AM to 9 PM daily. We provide a clean car and a driver who knows the roads to take you from Mathura to Balaji and back and we plan your darshan of Krishna in Mathura and Vrindavan around it, with no touts and one clear fare. The temple's own rituals are conducted by its priests; we handle the travel and your Braj darshan.

Tip from Gurudutt: if you are combining the two, keep the darshan of Krishna and the visit to Balaji as two distinct parts of your journey and give each its own unhurried time. Take the darshan of Krishna in Mathura and Vrindavan in the gentle devotion of Braj and make the drive to Mehandipur Balaji its own focused pilgrimage. A car that takes you there and back in comfort, so you can rest on the road, makes the long day far easier, especially with elders.
