1. Krishna Janmabhoomi: the birthplace of Krishna

The heart of Mathura, and the first place to see, is the Krishna Janmabhoomi, the Shri Krishna Janmasthan, built at the very spot where Krishna was born in the prison of the tyrant Kansa. You can see the small cell, the garbha griha, revered as the exact birthplace, and the grand Keshavdev temple beside it. It is deeply moving and heavily guarded; travel light, as bags and phones are restricted, and go early to beat the crowds.

2. Dwarkadhish Temple

Mathura's grandest and most-visited city temple is the Dwarkadhish temple, built in 1814, dedicated to Krishna as the Lord of Dwarka. Its ornate courtyards, painted ceilings and beautiful jhankis draw devotees all day, and it is especially glorious at Holi and Janmashtami. It sits close to Vishram Ghat, so the two pair naturally.

3. Vishram Ghat and the Yamuna aarti

The chief of Mathura's twenty-five ghats is Vishram Ghat, where Krishna is said to have rested after slaying Kansa. It is the start of the Mathura parikrama, and each evening the grand Yamuna aarti is performed here, lamps and song reflected in the river, one of the loveliest sights in the city. Take a short boat ride at sunset for the full beauty of it.

4. Kans Qila

On the bank of the Yamuna stand the old ruins of Kans Qila, the fort of King Kansa, Krishna's tyrant uncle. Though much is now in ruins, with later Rajput and Mughal additions, it carries the weight of the Krishna story and offers quiet views over the river. A short, atmospheric stop for those who love history.

5. Gita Mandir (Birla Mandir)

A little outside the old city, on the Vrindavan road, stands the beautiful Gita Mandir, also called the Birla Mandir, built by the Birla family. Its calm gardens and fine carving are lovely, and its treasure is the Gita Stambh, a red pillar on which the entire Bhagavad Gita is inscribed. A peaceful contrast to the busy old-town temples.

6. Potara Kund

Beside the Krishna Janmabhoomi lies the ancient Potara Kund, a stepped sandstone tank where, it is said, the baby Krishna's garments, his potey, were washed. Restored and serene, its stone steps descending to the water make it a quiet, sacred spot right beside the birthplace, easy to add to your Janmabhoomi visit.

7. Bhuteshwar Mahadev

Mathura is guarded in its four directions by ancient Shiva temples, and the most important is Bhuteshwar Mahadev, the kotwal, or guardian, of the city. Pilgrims traditionally take his darshan as the protector of Mathura, and it is busiest and most beautiful on Mondays and at Mahashivratri. A reminder that Krishna's city is watched over by Shiva himself.

8. The Government Museum, Mathura

For something beyond the temples, the Government Museum of Mathura is one of the finest in India, founded in 1874 and famous the world over for the Mathura school of art. Here are the great red-sandstone sculptures of the Kushan and Gupta ages, the celebrated standing Buddha, images of Kushan kings, and Jain and Hindu figures of astonishing beauty. It is a cool, absorbing hour that reveals Mathura's ancient greatness as a centre of art. (Closed on Mondays and public holidays.)

9. Gokul: Krishna's infant home

About 15 km from the city, across the Yamuna, lies Gokul, where the infant Krishna was carried in secret and raised by Nanda and Yashoda. Gentle and devotional, with its temples and the nearby Raman Reti where Krishna played in the soft sand, and Mahavan close by, it is a lovely half-day add-on to a Mathura trip and the true beginning of Krishna's story.

10. Govardhan: the hill Krishna lifted

About 22 km away rises Govardhan, the sacred hill that Krishna lifted on his finger to shelter Braj from the storms of Indra. The devout walk its 21 km parikrama, passing the lovely Kusum Sarovar and Mansi Ganga along the way. It is the greatest of the Mathura-side pilgrimages beyond the city, and a rewarding half to full day.

The best time to visit Mathura

The cool months of October to March are much the best for Mathura, pleasant for the temples, the ghats and the walking, while the summer of April to June is fierce. The city is at its most alive, though very crowded, during its great festivals: the world-famous Holi of Braj, and Janmashtami, Krishna's birthday, the grandest day of all in his birthplace. How to reach Mathura

Mathura is easy to reach. By road it is about 150 km from Delhi, roughly 3 hours on the Yamuna Expressway, and about 60 km from Agra. By train, Mathura Junction is a major railway hub with trains from across India. The nearest airport is Delhi.
