📌 QUICK ANSWER
Uddhav Kyari (also Udho-kriya-sthana or Kadamba-kyari) is a sacred forested site on the parikrama marg of Nandisvara hill in Nandgaon, near Mathura. It is revered as the place of the Uddhav-Gopi Samvad, the dialogue between Krishna's messenger Uddhav and the Gopis, immortalised in the Bhramar Geet of the Srimad Bhagavatam. Krishna sent the learned Uddhav here to teach the Gopis to meditate on the formless God; instead, their boundless love (Prema-Bhakti) humbled his intellectual pride and he prayed to be reborn as a blade of grass in this forest to receive the dust of their feet. Today the site has an ancient grove, the Uddhav temple and Uddhav Kunda. To visit Uddhav Kyari and Nandgaon with a local guide, call or WhatsApp +91 7302265809.
There is a quiet grove on the parikrama path of Nandgaon where one of the greatest debates in all of Indian thought was settled, not with argument but with tears. This is Uddhav Kyari, the forest where Krishna's learned messenger Uddhav came to teach philosophy to simple village women and left as their disciple. It is the site of the Bhramar Geet, the Song of the Bee and in the Bhakti tradition it marks the moment pure love proved greater than all knowledge. Few places in Braj carry so much meaning in so little noise. Plan your visit with our Mathura Vrindavan tour packages.

It is a quiet forest that most visitors walk past on the parikrama without knowing what happened here. In this guide I will tell you the full story of why Krishna sent Uddhav, the Bhramar Geet and the Song of the Bee, how devotion humbled knowledge, Uddhav's beautiful transformation, what remains to see today and how to reach the site. Why Krishna Sent Uddhav to Nandgaon
After Krishna left the villages of Braj for the city of Krishna Janmabhoomi in Mathura to slay the tyrant Kansa, he could not forget the pure affection of his foster parents and the Gopis he had left behind. Their pain of separation from him was immense.
Krishna's close friend and cousin Uddhav was a brilliant philosopher, a firm believer in the path of knowledge (Gyan Marg) and in the formless, unmanifested God (Niraakar Brahma). He carried, gently, a certain pride in his vast understanding. Krishna, who loved Uddhav, devised a single errand that would both comfort the Gopis and cure his friend's subtle intellectual ego. He sent Uddhav to Nandgaon with a message: the Gopis should forget Krishna's physical form and meditate instead on the formless supreme spirit. Uddhav set out for the village expecting to teach philosophy, with ease, to simple cowherd women.
The Bhramar Geet: The Song of the Bee
What Uddhav met at this forest in Nandgaon was nothing he had read of in any scripture. He was met with Maha-bhava, the absolute, ultimate expression of pure, unconditional divine love, the Prema-Bhakti of Shrimati Radharani and the Gopis. His careful arguments for the formless God simply could not reach hearts already wholly given to a beloved Krishna with form, face and flute.
Then came the moment that gave this place its fame. As Uddhav spoke, a bumblebee flew past and Radharani turned and addressed the bee as though it were a messenger sent by Krishna. In a flood of words at once emotional, brilliant and gently satirical, she poured out her love and her reproach, using the bee to answer Uddhav's philosophy of the formless. This is the Bhramar Geet, the Song of the Bee, one of the most celebrated passages of the Srimad Bhagavatam and it was sung here at Uddhav Kyari. To hear it even retold at the spot is to understand why Braj holds love above all learning.
Devotion Humbles Knowledge: Uddhav's Transformation
In the Bhakti tradition, Uddhav Kyari marks the gentle defeat of dry philosophy by pure devotion. Uddhav's every effort to turn the Gopis to the formless failed completely; their intense, loving, emotional response dissolved his intellectual pride entirely. Far from teaching them, he was transformed by them.
Astounded by the spiritual height of these village women, Uddhav set aside the path he had come to preach and accepted Radharani and the Gopis as his own spiritual masters, his gurus. He was so moved that he prayed to Lord Krishna for a single boon: to be born again as a humble blade of grass or a small bush in this very forest, so that forever the dust of the Gopis' feet might fall upon his head. That a great philosopher begged to become grass for the love in this place is the truest measure of what happened at Uddhav Kyari. It is the same supreme love honoured across the twin villages, at Barsana, Radha's own home.
What to See at Uddhav Kyari Today
The site today is serene and spreads across several acres of quiet, forested ground on the parikrama path, a world away from the busy temples. As you visit you will find:
The ancient grove: old Pilu and Doongar trees, the forest in which the Gopis once walked and in which Uddhav longed to be reborn as grass.
The Uddhav temple: a small shrine dedicated to Sri Uddhav Ji, honouring the philosopher who became the Gopis' disciple.
Uddhav Kunda: the adjacent holy water body, often associated locally with Visakha Kunda, completing the sacred grove.
It sits close to the historic Nand Mahal, the palace of Nand Baba honoured at Nand Bhavan and the Narada Vana, so it folds naturally into a Nandgaon visit. To have a puja offered in your family's name at the site, our pooja services can arrange it with the local priests.
Location and How to Reach Uddhav Kyari
Uddhav Kyari lies on the Parikrama Marg of Nandisvara hill in Nandgaon, District Mathura, pincode 281403, just south of Lalita Kunda and near Nand Mahal. Nandgaon is in the north-western corner of Braj, paired with Radha's village of Barsana.
From Mathura: about 50 km to the north-west; roughly 1.5 hours by road.
From Barsana: about 8 to 9 km; twenty to thirty minutes, the natural pairing.
From Govardhan: about 25 km across the Braj countryside.
At Nandgaon: the site is on the hill parikrama path; it is a short walk into the quiet forest off the marg.
Nandgaon is rural Braj and the site is a little isolated, so a car and a guide are much the easiest way to find it. Our Mathura Vrindavan taxi drivers know the Nandgaon parikrama marg well.
Combine Your Visit: A Nandgaon and Barsana Day
Uddhav Kyari is best seen as part of a Nandgaon and Barsana day, the twin villages of Krishna and Radha. A gentle sequence might run:
Order | Place | Why it fits |

2 | Uddhav Kyari | The Bhramar Geet forest on the parikrama path |
3 | The narrow pass between the villages, a famous Holi site
4 | The hilltop temple of Radha in her own village
5 | The hill shrine of Radha's loving sulk (maan)
6 | The lake of divine love between Barsana and Nandgaon |
A representative full day of the twin villages; the Braj countryside is best seen with a guide.
Best Time to Visit Uddhav Kyari
The grove is open to pilgrims through the day, but Nandgaon is lovely in the cool months and most alive at its festivals.
October to March: the best season; pleasant for the Nandgaon hill and the forest parikrama.
Lathmar Holi (Feb or Mar): Nandgaon's famous stick Holi with Barsana; thrilling but very crowded.
Janmashtami and Nandotsav (Aug to Sep): Nand Baba's own village celebrates Krishna's birth with great joy.
Mornings: the quietest and most meditative time in the forest grove.

Practical Tips for Your Visit
Know the Bhramar Geet before you go; the forest is quiet and its whole power is in the story, so read it first.
Pair it with Nand Bhavan; it sits on the same Nandgaon parikrama, near the Nand Mahal.
Take a guide for the parikrama marg; the site is a little isolated and unsignposted in the forest.
Come in the morning for the most meditative atmosphere among the old trees.
Tread gently and quietly; this is a contemplative grove, not a bustling temple.
Carry water and sensible footwear for the forested, uneven parikrama path.
The Honest Bit
Let me be honest: Uddhav Kyari is a quiet forest grove with a small temple and a kunda, not a grand monument. If you arrive without knowing the story of Uddhav and the Bhramar Geet you will see only trees and wonder why pilgrims come, so go knowing it and the grove becomes one of the most moving places in Braj. The site is somewhat isolated on the parikrama marg, can look neglected outside festival times and is genuinely hard to find without a local, so do not attempt it blind. Nandgaon is rural, spread-out Braj, quite unlike compact Vrindavan, with a hill and countryside roads. A guide who can lead you to the grove and tell the Bhramar Geet at the spot is what turns the visit into something you will remember for life. I am Gurudutt, born in Gokul, guiding pilgrims through Braj since 2018, more than fifty thousand of them by now. The hidden parikrama sites of Nandgaon are exactly where a local guide is worth everything: we know the turn off the marg into the Uddhav Kyari grove, the Bhramar Geet to recite at the spot, the right order to pair Nandgaon with Barsana and how to time a visit around Lathmar Holi. We are a Ministry of Tourism certified operator with a fleet of more than fifty vehicles, we meet you at the station or airport, we keep one clear fare with no surprises and we never charge for darshan that is free. We are rated 4.5 stars and we answer on WhatsApp from 8 AM to 9 PM.
Tip from Gurudutt: Stand quietly among the old Pilu trees at Uddhav Kyari and let the story settle on you. The most learned philosopher of his age came here certain he would teach simple village women and left begging to be reborn as a blade of grass in this soil, just to feel the dust of their feet. That is the one lesson Braj most wants you to carry home: that love reaches higher than any learning. Come in the morning hush, before the parikrama fills and you will feel why Uddhav never wanted to leave. |
