I am Gurudutt, born in Gokul in the Mathura district, guiding pilgrims through Braj since 2018, more than 50,000 of them. Many visitors see Vrindavan's temples without ever learning of the saints who built them and miss half the wonder of the place. Here is a guide, told by someone from this soil, to the great saints of Vrindavan, the ones who found its lost holy places, sang its first bhajans and raised its temples and to the samadhis and shrines where you can still feel their presence.

Chaitanya Mahaprabhu and the rediscovery of Vrindavan

By the early 1500s much of Vrindavan's sacred geography had been lost to time. It was the great Bengali saint Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, revered by his followers as Krishna himself came as a devotee, who came to Vrindavan around 1515, wept in ecstatic love through its forests and rediscovered many of its lost holy sites. He did not stay, but he sent his most brilliant disciples, the men who would become the Six Goswamis, to settle here, uncover the leela-places of Radha and Krishna, write the philosophy of divine love and build the temples. Almost everything that followed in Vrindavan flows from his visit.

The Six Goswamis of Vrindavan

The Six Goswamis were six saintly scholars, disciples of Chaitanya, who gave up wealth and comfort to live simply in Vrindavan and serve Krishna. Between them they rediscovered the holy sites, wrote the great works of Gaudiya Vaishnava philosophy and founded the temples still counted among Vrindavan's most sacred. They were:

• Rupa Goswami: the chief of the six, a peerless poet and philosopher, who founded the Govind Dev Ji temple; his samadhi is at Radha Damodar.

• Sanatana Goswami: Rupa's elder brother, who founded the Madan Mohan temple, where his samadhi rests.

• Jiva Goswami: their nephew, the great philosopher of the Sat Sandarbhas, who founded the Radha Damodar temple, which holds his samadhi and Rupa's.

• Gopal Bhatt Goswami: who brought the self-manifested deity of the Radha Raman temple from a shaligram stone.

• Raghunath Das Goswami: renowned for his renunciation and his deep devotion to Radha Kund.

• Raghunath Bhatta Goswami: the sweet reciter of the Bhagavata, beloved for his humility.

The rasika saints and temple founders

Alongside the Goswamis, other great rasika saints, lovers of Krishna's sweetness, shaped the worship of Vrindavan and founded its most beloved temples. Chief among them is Swami Haridas, the King of Rasikas, guru of the legendary musician Tansen, whose worship in the grove of Nidhivan gave Vrindavan its most adored deity at the Banke Bihari temple; his bhajan sthal and samadhi are at Nidhivan. His dear friend Hit Harivansh Mahaprabhu founded the Radha Vallabh sampradaya and the Radha Vallabh temple, singing his Hita Chaurasi in praise of Radha; and the saint-poet Hariram Vyas, of the same line, revealed the deity of the Jugal Kishore temple. Together Swami Haridas, Hit Harivansh and Hariram Vyas are lovingly called the Rasika Triveni, the three great rasikas of Vrindavan.

The great acharyas: Vallabhacharya and Nimbarka

Two of the great acharyas, founders of whole traditions of devotion, are woven into the life of Braj. Mahaprabhu Vallabhacharya, founder of the Pushtimarg, the path of divine grace, wandered all of Braj and made his eighty-four seats, the Chaurasi Baithak, where he expounded the Bhagavata; his tradition centres on Gokul and Govardhan. And Nimbarkacharya, founder of the ancient Nimbarka sampradaya, who taught the eternal worship of Radha and Krishna together, is deeply connected with Vrindavan and nearby Dhruva Tila. Between the Gaudiya, Radha Vallabha, Haridasi, Pushtimarg and Nimbarka traditions, almost every school of Krishna devotion has its roots or its flowering here.

Later and modern saints of Vrindavan

The line of saints never broke. The great commentator Vishwanath Chakravarti Thakur deepened Gaudiya thought in the 17th century; the princess-saint Meera Bai, the very embodiment of loving surrender to Krishna, is remembered in Vrindavan and honoured at the Meera Bai temple; and in modern times Vrindavan drew luminous souls such as the long-lived yogi Devraha Baba, who lived on the Yamuna and Neem Karoli Baba, beloved of devotees around the world, who left his body in Vrindavan. Even today the town is full of living saints and sadhus and its bhajan ashrams still ring with the same songs the Goswamis sang five centuries ago.
