I am Gurudutt, born in Gokul in the Mathura district, guiding pilgrims through Braj since 2018, more than 50,000 of them and I welcome many who are also visiting or returning from Haridwar. What is Vrindavan?

Vrindavan is the temple town where Krishna spent his enchanted childhood, in the Braj region of Uttar Pradesh, on the banks of the Yamuna. It is a town of some five thousand temples, alive day and night with bells, kirtan and devotion, home to the beloved Banke Bihari, the marble Prem Mandir, the kirtan of ISKCON and the grove of Nidhivan. It is a Vaishnava pilgrimage, of Krishna and Radha and its spirit is joy and love, at its most exuberant in the world-famous Holi of Braj. Nearby lies Mathura, Krishna's birthplace and the wider Braj of Govardhan and Barsana.

What is Haridwar?

Haridwar, in Uttarakhand, is one of the seven holiest cities of Hinduism and one of the four sites of the Kumbh Mela. Its name means the Gateway to God, for it is here that the sacred Ganga leaves the Himalayas and enters the plains. Its heart is Har Ki Pauri, the great bathing ghat, where pilgrims take the holy dip to wash away sins and where the magnificent Ganga aarti is performed each evening, the river ablaze with floating lamps. Haridwar is a more solemn, Ganga-and-Shiva-centred pilgrimage and the gateway to the Char Dham of Uttarakhand, to Rishikesh and to the Himalayan shrines beyond.

• The experience: in Vrindavan you take darshan in temple after temple; in Haridwar you take the holy dip and the Ganga aarti.

• The setting: Vrindavan is on the Braj plains; Haridwar is in the Himalayan foothills, gateway to the mountains.

Can you do both? Pairing Vrindavan and Haridwar

Here is the happy truth: you need not choose. Vrindavan and Haridwar are only about 370 km apart, roughly six hours by road, so many pilgrims do both in one journey, pairing the Yamuna and the Ganga, Krishna's joy and the Ganga's grace. A natural plan is a few days in Braj, then the drive north to Haridwar and Rishikesh or the reverse. To bathe in the Ganga at Haridwar and bow to the Yamuna in Krishna's Vrindavan is a beautiful pilgrimage between India's two holiest rivers. The best time to visit

For both, the cool months of October to March are much the best, pleasant for the temples, the ghats and the aartis. Vrindavan is most vibrant at Holi, Janmashtami and Radhashtami; Haridwar at the Kumbh and Ardh Kumbh Melas and in the Kanwar season (around July). Tips for choosing and visiting

• Choose what draws you: Krishna and joy (Vrindavan) or the Ganga and the Himalayas (Haridwar).

• If you can, do both; they are only about 6 hours apart.

• Both have a wonderful evening river aarti; do not miss the Yamuna aarti at Kesi Ghat.

• Come October to March for the most pleasant weather either.

• Expect crowds at festival times, Holi in Braj, the Kumbh at Haridwar.

• For the Braj part, a local guide brings the temples and stories alive.

Honest words from one born in Braj. I love my Vrindavan, but let me be fair: Haridwar is equally holy and the two are simply different pilgrimages, not rivals. If your heart is with Krishna, kirtan and the joy of the temples, Vrindavan will move you most; if you long for the holy Ganga dip, the great river aarti and the road to the Himalayas, Haridwar is your place. Both are crowded, living holy cities, not quiet resorts, so come prepared for that. And since they are so close, the truest answer for many is not 'either', but 'both'. Whichever you choose, come with an open heart and both the Yamuna and the Ganga will bless you.
