What is Vrindavan?

Vrindavan is the temple town where Krishna spent his enchanted childhood, in the Braj region of Uttar Pradesh, on the banks of the Yamuna. It is a town of some five thousand temples, alive day and night with bells, kirtan and devotion, home to the beloved Banke Bihari, the marble Prem Mandir, the kirtan of ISKCON and the grove of Nidhivan. It is a pilgrimage of Krishna and Radha and its spirit is joy, love and play, at its most exuberant in the world-famous Holi of Braj. Nearby lies Mathura, Krishna's birthplace and the wider Braj of Govardhan and Barsana.

What is Ayodhya?

Ayodhya, in eastern Uttar Pradesh on the banks of the Sarayu, is the birthplace of Lord Rama and the capital of his kingdom, one of the seven holiest cities of Hinduism and the setting of the great epic, the Ramayana. Its heart today is the magnificent new Ram Mandir at the Ram Janmabhoomi, consecrated in 2024, which has drawn millions of pilgrims. Ayodhya is a grander, more epic pilgrimage, of Rama and Sita, with the Sarayu ghats, the Hanuman Garhi temple, the Kanak Bhavan and the great festivals of Ram Navami and the Deepotsav, when the city is lit with countless lamps.

Can you do both? Pairing Vrindavan and Ayodhya

Here is the happy truth: you need not choose. Vrindavan and Ayodhya are both in Uttar Pradesh, about 500 km apart and the fast new Agra-Lucknow and Purvanchal expressways make the journey between them far easier than before. The best time to visit

For both, the cool months of October to March are much the best, pleasant for the temples and the ghats. Vrindavan is most vibrant at Holi, Janmashtami and Radhashtami; Ayodhya at Ram Navami and, above all, at the Deepotsav around Diwali, when the Sarayu ghats blaze with lakhs of lamps. Tips for choosing and visiting

• Choose the avatar who calls you: Krishna's joy (Vrindavan) or Rama's grandeur (Ayodhya).

• If you can, do both; they are in the same state and now well connected by expressway.

• In Vrindavan, do not miss Banke Bihari, Prem Mandir and the Yamuna aarti at Kesi Ghat.

• In Ayodhya, the grand Ram Mandir and the Sarayu aarti are the great sights.

• Come October to March; expect big crowds at Holi in Braj and Deepotsav at Ayodhya.

Honest words from one born in Braj. I love my Vrindavan, but let me be fair: Ayodhya is equally holy and the two are simply different dhams, not rivals, one of Krishna, one of Rama. If your heart is with Krishna, kirtan and the joy of Braj, Vrindavan will move you most; if you are drawn to Rama, the Ramayana and the magnificent new Ram Mandir, Ayodhya is your place. Both are busy, living pilgrimage cities and Ayodhya especially draws vast crowds since the temple opened, so come prepared for that. And since both are in Uttar Pradesh, the truest answer for many is not 'either', but 'both'. Whichever you choose, come with an open heart and both Krishna and Rama will bless you.
