Mathura, the birthplace of Krishna, is the first pillar of any Braj tour. The essential places are the Krishna Janmabhoomi, the very spot where Krishna was born in Kansa's prison; the grand Dwarkadhish temple, the great city temple of 1814, most vibrant at aarti; and the sacred Vishram Ghat on the Yamuna, where Krishna rested after slaying Kansa, with its beautiful evening Yamuna aarti, boat rides and the start of the Mathura parikrama.
