📌 QUICK ANSWER

The distance from Pune to Vrindavan is about 1,278 to 1,449 km, roughly 23 to 29 hours by road via the new NE 4 expressway. This is a very long journey, effectively a two-day drive, so nearly all travellers prefer to fly to Delhi, about 2 hours, then drive 3 to 3.5 hours to Braj, or take a long train. Pune, the great city of Maharashtra, and Vrindavan, the temple town of Krishna, lie far apart, over 1,270 km across the length of central India. Yet Pune's many devotees of Krishna make the journey to his land, and there are comfortable ways to do it. Here, from one born in Braj, is the complete guide to the Pune to Vrindavan distance, the routes both ways, and the best way to travel. Plan your visit with our Mathura Vrindavan tour packages.

Key takeaways

  • Pune to Vrindavan is about 1,278 to 1,449 km, roughly 23 to 29 hours by road.

  • The fastest route uses the new NE 4 expressway, about 1,278 km in around 23 hours.

  • It is effectively a two-day drive, so flying is by far the best way for most travellers.

  • Fly Pune to Delhi (about 2 hours), then drive 3 to 3.5 hours to Braj.

  • The train is a long but comfortable alternative to Mathura Junction.

  • Driving should be split over two days with an overnight stop.

I am Gurudutt, born in Gokul in the Mathura district, guiding pilgrims through Braj since 2018, more than 50,000 of them. Many who come to us travel from Pune and Maharashtra, drawn to Krishna's land. Here is everything you need, told by someone who receives these travellers: the exact distances and routes both ways, the flight and train options, the best way to travel over such a long distance, and the last leg into Vrindavan.

Pune to Vrindavan distance and driving routes

By road, the distance from Pune to Vrindavan is about 1,278 to 1,449 km, and the drive takes roughly 23 to 29 hours depending on the route, up the length of central India. There are three main ways, but all are very long.

Pune to Vrindavan road routes. Approximate; the NE 4 expressway is shortest and quickest.

The NE 4 route, on the smooth new Delhi-Mumbai Expressway, is the shortest and quickest, but even so it is a journey of some 23 hours, far too long for one stretch. If you drive, it must be split over two days with an overnight stop; but honestly, for so long a distance, flying is far better. A car that knows the roads can carry you or meet you for the last leg; our Mathura Vrindavan taxi service can help.

Vrindavan to Pune distance (the return journey)

The road back, from Vrindavan to Pune, is much the same, about 1,398 to 1,449 km and 25 to 29 hours. If you are planning the reverse leg, these are the main routes.

Vrindavan to Pune road routes. Approximate; times vary widely, so a flight is far easier.

Pune to Vrindavan by train

For so long a journey, the train is a comfortable alternative to the long drive, though it too takes many hours. There is no major station in Vrindavan, so you travel to Mathura Junction, the railhead for Braj, and drive the last 14 km. Trains run from Pune towards Mathura, taking around 22 to 28 hours, so a good overnight-and-day train is the way; from Mathura, we can meet you.

  • Where to board: trains run from Pune Junction towards Mathura Junction.

  • How long it takes: roughly 22 to 28 hours; choose a good overnight-and-day train.

  • The last leg: from Mathura Junction, Vrindavan is about 14 km, around 30 minutes.

  • Book ahead: reserve your Pune to Mathura ticket well in advance, especially in festival season.

Pune to Vrindavan by air

For this distance, flying is by far the best and most popular way. Pune has a major airport with flights to Delhi, and the nearest airport to Braj is Delhi, about 150 km away. A flight from Pune to Delhi, about 2 hours, then a 3 to 3.5 hour drive to Vrindavan, is vastly quicker than the 23-hour road journey. For almost all travellers from Pune, flying via Delhi is the way.

  • Pune has a major airport with frequent flights to Delhi.

  • Nearest airport to Braj: Delhi, about 150 km away.

  • Fly Pune to Delhi (about 2 hours), then drive 3 to 3.5 hours to Vrindavan.

  • Flying via Delhi is vastly quicker than the long road journey; it is the clear choice.

Pune to Vrindavan by bus

Buses run from Pune towards the north, taking well over a day, and are the budget option. But they are extremely long and tiring over such a distance, so a flight, or at least a train, is far easier and worth the extra cost for almost all travellers.

The best way to travel

Over this distance, the choice is clear: flying is by far the best. Flying to Delhi and driving on is quickest by far; a long train is a comfortable alternative; a private car is a two-day drive and only for those who wish to drive; and the bus is the cheapest but exhausting. The table sets them side by side.

A quick comparison. Over this distance, flying via Delhi is clearly the best.

Breaking the journey and what to see on the way

If you do drive, this vast journey must be split over two days with an overnight stop, most naturally around the Gwalior or Agra area in the later stages. Agra, with the Taj Mahal, is a natural place to break near the end, before the final short drive to Braj. But for so long a distance, flying spares you all of this. Whether you fly, train or drive, plan the journey so you arrive rested for the darshan.

What to see when you arrive

Once in Vrindavan, the darshans begin. The most beloved is the Banke Bihari temple, best in the cool morning, and the grand Prem Mandir with its evening light show. Add ISKCON Vrindavan for its continuous kirtan, and the evening Yamuna aarti at Kesi Ghat. In nearby Mathura, see the Krishna Janmabhoomi, the birthplace, and the grand Dwarkadhish temple. After a long journey, an overnight stay lets you take the darshan unhurried; see our Mathura Vrindavan hotels.

The best time to visit

The cool months of October to March are much the best for the journey and for Braj, pleasant on the road and at the temples, while the summer is very hot. If you travel in the festival season, around Janmashtami, Radhashtami, Diwali or Holi, expect the town to be joyful but crowded, and book ahead. See our best time to visit Mathura Vrindavan guide and the Mathura Vrindavan festivals calendar for the seasons in full.

Tips for the journey

  • For this distance, fly Pune to Delhi and drive 3 to 3.5 hours to Braj; it is by far the quickest.

  • A long train from Pune to Mathura Junction is a comfortable alternative to driving.

  • If you must drive, take the NE 4 expressway and split it over two days.

  • Add Agra's Taj near the end of the route if you drive or on a wider trip.

  • Book flights, trains and hotels well ahead, especially in festival season.

  • Come October to March for the most pleasant weather.

The honest bit

Honest words on the Pune to Vrindavan journey, from one born in Braj. Let me be very plain: this is a huge distance, over 1,270 km and 23 hours or more by road, effectively a two-day drive, so please do not attempt to drive it in one go. For almost every traveller from Pune, flying to Delhi and driving the last stretch, or taking a long train, is far, far easier, and the sensible choice. If you do drive, split it over two days with an overnight stop, and share the wheel. Distances and times are approximate and vary widely. For the last leg and once you are here, a car that knows the town saves you time and touts; an early booking secures a good stay.

Why Experience My India is the right choice

I was born in Gokul in the Mathura district, and I welcome travellers from Pune and Maharashtra every week, almost all flying in via Delhi. Guiding since 2018, more than 50,000 pilgrims, 4.5 stars on Google, WhatsApp first, 8 AM to 9 PM daily. We meet you at Delhi airport, Mathura Junction or your doorstep, carry you around the temples in the right order, and, if you wish, add Agra and the Taj to the trip, with the stories told on the ground and no touts. One clear fare, and never a charge for free darshan.

Tip from Gurudutt: over such a vast distance, do not tire yourself on the road; fly. Take a morning flight from Pune to Delhi, and let us meet you and drive you the last stretch to Braj, so you arrive the same day, fresh and unhurried, for the evening Yamuna aarti and the dawn darshan of Banke Bihari the next morning. And since Agra lies near, add the Taj at sunrise. Save all your energy for the temples of Krishna's land, and the journey from far-off Pune becomes a joyful pilgrimage rather than an ordeal.
