Mathura: the birthplace of Krishna

Mathura, on the Yamuna, is where Krishna was born in a prison cell and the heart of it is the Krishna Janmabhoomi, the very spot of his birth. Nearby stand the grand Dwarkadhish temple and the riverside Vishram Ghat, where the evening Yamuna aarti is beautiful. Mathura is an old city of temples, bazaars and its famous peda and it sits right on the way between Delhi and Agra.

Vrindavan: the town of Krishna's leelas

A short 14 km from Mathura lies Vrindavan, where the child Krishna played among the groves. It is the most temple-dense town of all, from the beloved Banke Bihari in its crowded lane to the marble grandeur of Prem Mandir and the ceaseless kirtan of ISKCON. Do not miss Nidhivan, the sacred grove of the Ras Leela. Vrindavan is the devotional heart of the trip.

Agra: the city of the Taj Mahal

About 58 km beyond Mathura, an hour down the expressway, lies Agra, the Mughal capital that gave the world the Taj Mahal. The Taj is best seen at sunrise, when the marble glows and the crowds are thinnest; note that it is closed every Friday and an entry fee applies, higher for foreign visitors, so plan accordingly. Beyond the Taj, Agra holds the mighty Agra Fort and, about 40 km away, the ghost city of Fatehpur Sikri, along with the riverside Mehtab Bagh for a Taj sunset view and the delicate Itmad-ud-Daula, the Baby Taj. A day is enough for the highlights.

• Agra Fort: the great red-sandstone fort, a short drive from the Taj.

• Fatehpur Sikri: the abandoned Mughal city about 40 km from Agra, worth a half day if you have time.

The three sit conveniently along the Yamuna Expressway from Delhi, so linking them by car is simple. These are the approximate distances and driving times.

How to visit all three: the ideal itinerary

The best way is to move in a natural line along the expressway, building each day around the temple hours and the Taj's sunrise. Here is the plan I recommend for three days; a tighter two-day version is below.

How to reach and the best route from Delhi

Most travellers start from Delhi and the Yamuna Expressway makes the route beautifully simple. There are two natural orders: Delhi to Mathura and Vrindavan first, then on to Agra and back; or Delhi to Agra first, then back up to Braj. I usually prefer Braj first, so you end the trip with the Taj at sunrise and drive home from Agra. Delhi to Mathura is about 3 to 3.5 hours, Mathura to Agra about an hour and Agra back to Delhi about 3.5 to 4 hours, all on good expressway. By train, reach Mathura Junction for Braj and Agra Cantt for the Taj; a car ties it all together.

The best time to make the trip

The cool months of October to March are much the best for both the Braj temples and the Taj, pleasant on the road and comfortable for the sunrise at Agra; the summer of April to June is very hot and the monument marble scorching by midday. If you travel for a festival, Janmashtami, Radhashtami, Holi or Diwali, Braj is joyful but crowded, so book ahead. Tips for the Braj-and-Taj trip

• Give the circuit two to three days; two is doable, three is comfortable.

• See the Taj at sunrise and never plan it for a Friday, when it is closed.

• Do the Braj darshans in the morning and evening, around the midday temple closure.

• Travel Braj to Agra along the Yamuna Expressway; it is fast and smooth.

• Carry ID for the Taj and expect an entry fee, higher for foreign visitors.

• Use a car with a local driver to link the temples, the Taj and the fort without wasting time.

The honest bit

Honest words from one born in Braj. The Braj-and-Taj circuit is wonderful, but do not try to cram it into a single day; Agra alone, with the Taj, the fort and the drive, needs the best part of a day. Give the trip two days at least and three to do it justice. Distances and times here are approximate and shift with traffic and monument timings and fees change, so confirm the Taj's hours and cost before you go and remember it is shut on Fridays.
