📌 QUICK ANSWER
Nand Baithak, beside the adjacent Nand Kund, is a sacred site in Nandgaon where Nanda Maharaja, Krishna's foster father, would sit each morning after his bath to relax and hold council with the cowherd elders. Baithak means a seat or sitting-place and the site is traditionally regarded as the Parliament of ancient Nandgaon, where village decisions were made, including the famous decision to worship Govardhan Hill instead of Indra. The temple here has a unique altar of Krishna and Balarama on Nanda Baba's lap and the site holds a Govardhan Shila shaped like a Shivlingam and the samadhi of Siddh Baba Haridas. Nand Baithak is the spot where Nanda Maharaja, the chief of the cowherds and Krishna's foster father, sat each morning to rest and hold council and it is traditionally remembered as the Parliament of ancient Nandgaon. The Baithak and Nand Kund: Nanda Maharaja's Morning
When Nanda Maharaja relocated his entire cowherd community from Gokul to the safety of Nandgaon, to protect the child Krishna from the demons King Kansa kept sending, he built his whole life around the Nandishwar hill. His mornings had a simple, beautiful rhythm. Each day he would take his holy bath in the adjoining Nand Kund and then, refreshed, he would come and sit at this precise spot, the Baithak, to relax, to meet his friends and to hold council.
To picture Nand Baba here, bathed and seated in the morning light with the elders of Braj gathering around him, is to be very close to the ordinary dignity of the family who raised Krishna. The Baithak and the Kund together make one of the most human corners of Nand Bhavan's Nandgaon.
The Parliament of Braj
Because Nanda Maharaja was the chief of the cowherds, this seat was far more than a resting place. Whenever crucial community decisions had to be made, the elderly cowherd men of the region would gather here around him. For that reason the Nand Baithak is traditionally regarded as the historical Parliament of ancient Nandgaon, the council room where the issues of the village and the wider cowherd community were raised and resolved. In an age with no courts or offices, this quiet seat by the water was where Braj governed itself, under the gentle authority of Krishna's own foster father.
The Decision Against Indra and the Lifting of Govardhan
The single most momentous decision ever taken at this seat changed the spiritual life of Braj forever. Local folklore emphasises that it was here, in this council, that the village elders made the historic choice to stop offering the traditional sacrifices to the rain god, Lord Indra and to worship Giriraj Govardhan, the hill that actually fed their cows and their people, instead.
That decision, taken at the Baithak, is what provoked the furious Indra to send his deluge upon Braj and what led to the greatest of all the childhood miracles: the young Krishna lifting the whole of Mount Govardhan on his little finger to shelter the people and cattle for seven days and nights. To stand at Nand Baithak is to stand where that choice was made. The full story is told in our guide to Govardhan and it is remembered every year at the Govardhan Puja and Annakut among the Braj festivals.
The Altar and the Saint Haridas Baba
The temple built at Nand Baithak holds one of the most tender altars in all of Braj: a unique darshan of Lord Krishna and Balarama sitting affectionately on the lap of Nanda Baba, the two divine boys at home with their father. There is a lovely reason for this exact form. It is said that a saint named Siddh Baba Haridas performed intense penance and bhajan at this spot and that Krishna, pleased with his devotion, granted him darshan in this very paternal form, seated with Balarama on Nanda's lap.
The site also holds a Govardhan Shila, a sacred stone of Govardhan Hill, shaped naturally like a Shivlingam and the samadhi of Shri Haridas Baba himself. Together they make Nand Baithak not only a council-seat of legend but a living shrine of devotion. To have a puja offered in your family's name here, our pooja services can arrange it with the local priests.
Location and How to Reach Nand Baithak
Nand Baithak is tucked into a serene area away from the main hilltop temple of Nandgaon, close to the sacred ponds of the village. It sits 200 metres east of Yashoda Kund, right opposite the road leading to Pavan Sarovar, on Pansarovar Road in Nandgaon, pincode 281403. Nandgaon is in the western part of Braj, paired with Radha's village of Barsana.
From Mathura: about 50 km to the west; roughly 1.5 hours by road.
From Barsana: about 9 km; twenty to thirty minutes, the natural pairing.
From Yashoda Kund: just 200 metres west; an easy walk.
By local transport: auto-rickshaws and taxis run from Mathura and Vrindavan to Nandgaon.
Nandgaon is rural Braj, so a car is much the easiest way to reach it and to pair it with Barsana and the other kunds. Our Mathura Vrindavan taxi drivers know the Nandgaon ponds and roads well.
Combine Your Visit: A Nandgaon and Barsana Day
Nand Baithak is best seen as part of a Nandgaon and Barsana day, the twin villages of Krishna and Radha. A gentle sequence might run:
Order | Place | Why it fits |
1 | Nand Bhavan, Nandgaon | Nand Baba's great temple on the Nandgaon hill |
2 | Nand Baithak & Nand Kund | The council seat and bathing kund of Nanda Maharaja |
3 | The narrow pass between the villages, a famous Holi site
4 | The hilltop temple of Radha in her own village
5 | The hill shrine of Radha's loving sulk (maan)
6 | The lake of divine love between the two villages |
A representative full day of the twin villages; the Braj countryside is best seen with a guide.
Best Time to Visit Nand Baithak
The site is open to pilgrims through the day, but Nandgaon is lovely in the cool months and most alive at its festivals.
October to March: the best season; pleasant weather for the Nandgaon ponds and the countryside.
Govardhan Puja and Annakut (Oct to Nov): especially meaningful here, where the decision to worship Govardhan was made.
Lathmar Holi (Feb or Mar): Nandgaon and Barsana exchange their world-famous stick Holi; thrilling but very crowded.
Janmashtami and Nandotsav (Aug to Sep): Nand Baba's own village celebrates Krishna's birth with great joy.

Come in the morning, the hour Nanda Baba himself sat here, for the gentlest atmosphere.
Combine with Nand Bhavan and Barsana to make a full, meaningful day of the twin villages.
Dress modestly and tread gently at this quiet, sacred site.
The Honest Bit
Let me be honest: Nand Baithak is a humble, serene site by the Nandgaon ponds, not a grand temple with facilities. Its power is entirely in its story, the Parliament of Braj, the decision against Indra, the altar granted to Haridas Baba, so go knowing it and the quiet seat comes alive. Nandgaon is rural, spread-out Braj, with ponds and lanes and a hill, quite unlike the compact temple-tourism of Vrindavan and the site can look modest outside festival times. A local who can walk you here from Yashoda Kund and tell the stories at the spot makes all the difference. If you would like a comfortable base from which to explore the Nandgaon and Barsana countryside, our list of Mathura and Vrindavan hotels will help you choose.

Tip from Gurudutt: Sit quietly at Nand Baithak for a moment and let the weight of the place settle on you. This modest seat is where, in the memory of my people, the whole of Braj once governed itself and where the elders made the one decision that brought the great Govardhan miracle. Think of Nand Baba, freshly bathed in the Kund, settling here in the morning with his friends to decide the fate of the village. Then walk the two hundred metres to Yashoda Kund and you will have stood in both the heart and the home of the family that raised the Lord. |
