The layers of Braj's history

Braj's history comes in layers. First is the mythic age of Krishna himself, whose leelas these lands hold and whose great-grandson Vajranabha is said to have re-established the sacred sites after the Mahabharata era. Then comes the ancient historical age, when Mathura grew into one of the greatest cities of India. Then the medieval revival of the 16th century, when Chaitanya Mahaprabhu and the Six Goswamis rediscovered Braj and built its temples, often with Mughal-era patronage. And finally the age of later kings, above all the 18th-century Jat rulers of Bharatpur, who raised elegant monuments here. Every old place in Braj belongs to one of these layers.

Ancient Mathura: the oldest heart of Braj

Mathura is the oldest place of all, one of the seven sacred cities of India and a great urban centre for well over two thousand years, capital of the ancient Surasena kingdom and later a jewel of the Kushana empire, when the famous Mathura school of art produced its glorious red-sandstone sculptures of Buddhas, Jinas and gods, now treasured in the Government Museum. At its spiritual heart is the Krishna Janmabhoomi, the ancient birthplace of Krishna and the very prison of Kansa; nearby stands the old Kans Qila, the fort of Kansa on the Yamuna and the ancient central ghat of Vishram Ghat. Guarding the old city are its ancient Shiva temples, chief of them Bhuteshwar Mahadev, worshipped since time out of mind.

The oldest temples of Vrindavan

Though Vrindavan is full of new marble temples, its oldest and most historic shrines date to the great 16th-century revival. The oldest surviving of all is the red-sandstone Madan Mohan temple, built around 1580 by Sanatana Goswami on a hill above the Yamuna. The grandest is the Govind Dev Ji temple of 1590, a magnificent seven-storeyed sandstone temple raised with the help of Raja Man Singh of Amber during Akbar's reign and later partly demolished under Aurangzeb, its scars still visible. The Radha Damodar temple, holding the samadhis of Rupa and Jiva Goswami and other Goswami temples of the same century, complete this precious heritage of Braj's medieval golden age.

Ancient Mahavan and the hill of Govardhan

Across the Yamuna near Gokul lies the ancient forest of Mahavan, whose Chaurasi Khamba, the hall of eighty-four pillars, is one of the oldest standing structures in Braj, held by tradition to be the very palace of Nanda where Krishna was raised, some of its carved pillars clearly of great antiquity. And older than any building is Giriraj Govardhan itself, the sacred hill that Krishna lifted, revered since the dawn of the tradition and worshipped as the Lord in the form of stone. To stand before them is to touch the most ancient Braj of all.

Monuments of later kings: Kusum Sarovar and Barsana

Braj's heritage did not end with the temples. In the 18th century, the Jat rulers of Bharatpur raised some of its most beautiful monuments, above all the exquisite sandstone chhatris, the domed cenotaphs, that stand reflected in the waters of Kusum Sarovar near Govardhan, among the loveliest works of art in all of Braj. And on its ancient hill at Barsana, the Radha Rani temple, the Ladli Ji, crowns a site sacred since the age of Radha herself, its present structure the gift of later devotees and kings.
