I am Gurudutt, born in Gokul in the Mathura district, guiding pilgrims through Braj since 2018, more than 50,000 of them. Mathura, Vrindavan and Barsana are the towns I know best in the world and joining them into one flowing journey, in the right order and around the temple hours, is what I do every week. Mathura: the birthplace of Krishna

Mathura is where the story begins, the ancient city on the Yamuna where Krishna was born in a prison cell. The heart of it is the Krishna Janmabhoomi, the very spot of his birth, beside a mosque and guarded closely. Nearby stand the grand Dwarkadhish temple and the riverside Vishram Ghat, where the evening Yamuna aarti is a sight to still the heart. Mathura is busier and more urban than Vrindavan, an old city of temples, bazaars and its famous peda.

Vrindavan: the town of Krishna's leelas

A short 14 km from Mathura lies Vrindavan, where the child Krishna played his divine leelas among the groves. It is the most temple-dense town of all, from the beloved Banke Bihari in its crowded lane to the marble grandeur of Prem Mandir and the ceaseless kirtan of ISKCON. Do not miss Nidhivan, the sacred grove of the Ras Leela and the evening Yamuna aarti at Kesi Ghat. Vrindavan is the emotional heart of a Braj pilgrimage.

Barsana: the village of Radha

About 42 to 45 km from Mathura and Vrindavan rises Barsana, the hilltop village of Radha, Krishna's beloved. Its crown is the Radha Rani temple, also called the Shriji or Ladli Ji temple, reached by a climb of stone steps up Bhanugarh hill, with sweeping views over the Braj plain. Nearby is the Maan Mandir and just beyond lies Krishna's own village of Nandgaon. Barsana is world-famous for its Lathmar Holi, when the women of Barsana playfully drive off the men of Nandgaon with sticks and it blazes with devotion on Radhashtami, Radha's birthday.

The three towns sit at the corners of a rough triangle, easily linked by car. These are the approximate distances and driving times.

Because Barsana lies well outside the twin towns, a Mathura Vrindavan taxi with a driver who knows the village roads makes the whole triangle easy in a day of driving.

How to visit all three: the ideal itinerary

The best way to see the Braj triangle is over two to three days, moving in a natural order and building each day around the temple hours. Here is the plan I recommend.

The best time to visit the Braj triangle

The cool months of October to March are much the best for driving and climbing up Barsana's hill, while the summer of April to June is fierce. The two great seasons to witness the triangle at its most alive are Holi, when Barsana's Lathmar Holi and the Braj colours draw the world and Radhashtami, when Barsana celebrates Radha's birth. Beyond the three: the wider Braj

The triangle is the core, but Braj holds more if you have time. Govardhan Hill, which Krishna lifted, lies between Mathura and Barsana, with the beautiful Kusum Sarovar and the holy Radha Kund nearby. Around Barsana are Radha's own spots, including the lovely Prem Sarovar, the lake of love. And across the Yamuna lies Gokul, where Krishna spent his infancy. A day or two more turns the triangle into a full Braj yatra.

Getting around the three towns

Transport is the key to linking the triangle. Within each town the old lanes are best on foot or by e-rickshaw, but the stretches between, especially out to Barsana and Nandgaon, need a car. A private car with a driver who knows the roads and the temple timings holds the whole journey together, moving you smoothly from Mathura's ghats to Vrindavan's lanes to Barsana's hill without wasted hours or touts.

Tips for the Braj triangle

• Give the triangle three days if you can; two is possible but tight, especially for Barsana.

• Do the darshans in the morning and evening; rest and travel through the midday temple closure.

• Wear easy shoes for Barsana's stone steps and Vrindavan's lanes.

• Hire a car with a local driver for the out-of-town legs to Barsana and Nandgaon.

• For Holi or Radhashtami, book everything well ahead; the triangle fills to bursting.

Honest words from one born in Braj. Many pilgrims try to squeeze Mathura, Vrindavan and Barsana into a single day and it cannot be done well; Barsana alone, with its hill climb and its distance, needs half a day. Give the triangle two days at the very least and three to do it justice. Distances and times here are approximate and shift with traffic and roadworks, so treat them as a guide.
