📌 QUICK ANSWER

The distance from Ghaziabad to Barsana is about 148 to 152 km, roughly 2 hours 45 minutes by road. The route via the Eastern Peripheral Expressway and NH 44 is about 152 km in around 2 hours 42 minutes, while NH 44 direct is a little shorter at 148 km. Because Barsana lies west of Mathura, the plain NH 44 route serves well; the Yamuna Expressway is not the natural choice. A car is by far the easiest way. To arrange a car and your Barsana darshan, call or WhatsApp +91 7302265809.

Barsana, the hilltop village of Radha in the heart of Braj, famous for its Radha Rani temple and its world-renowned Lathmar Holi, is an easy half-day drive from Ghaziabad in the NCR. Whether you come for the darshan of Ladli Ji, for the great Holi, or simply to walk Radha's sacred village, the journey is a straightforward one. Here, from one born in Braj, is the complete guide to the Ghaziabad to Barsana distance, the routes, and the best way to travel. Plan your visit with our Mathura Vrindavan tour packages.

Key takeaways

  • Ghaziabad to Barsana is about 148 to 152 km, roughly 2 hours 45 minutes by road.

  • The quickest route uses the Eastern Peripheral Expressway and NH 44, about 152 km.

  • NH 44 direct is a little shorter at about 148 km.

  • Barsana lies west of Mathura, so NH 44 serves well; the Yamuna Expressway is longer and slower here.

  • Barsana is famous for the hilltop Radha Rani temple and its Lathmar Holi.

  • The temple sits atop Bhanugarh hill, reached by about 200 to 225 steps, or a ropeway or palki.

I am Gurudutt, born in Gokul in the Mathura district, guiding pilgrims through Braj since 2018, more than 50,000 of them, and I take devotees up to Radha Rani's temple in Barsana all the time, especially for Radhashtami and Lathmar Holi. I welcome many travellers from Ghaziabad and the NCR. Here is everything you need, told by someone who receives them and knows the roads: the exact distances and routes both ways, the train and other options, the best way to travel, and the darshan at the end.

Ghaziabad to Barsana distance and driving routes

By road, the distance is about 148 to 152 km, and the drive takes roughly 2 hours 45 minutes. Because Barsana lies to the west of Mathura, towards the Rajasthan border, the routes use the Eastern Peripheral Expressway and NH 44 rather than the Yamuna Expressway. There are two main ways from Ghaziabad.

The Eastern Peripheral Expressway and NH 44 route is the quickest, letting you skirt the Delhi traffic; NH 44 direct is marginally shorter in distance but a little slower. On the day, live traffic decides the smoothest line, and a car that knows the roads picks it; our Mathura Vrindavan taxi service can carry you the whole way or meet you for the last leg to the hill.

Barsana to Ghaziabad distance (the return journey)

The road back offers a few more choices, about 141 to 151 km, 3 to 3.5 hours with the Delhi-bound traffic. If you are planning the reverse leg, these are the main routes.

Ghaziabad to Barsana by train

The train is a comfortable option for part of the way, though Barsana has no station of its own. The nearest railhead is Mathura Junction, about 42 to 45 km from Barsana, with trains from the Delhi and NCR side; from Mathura, you drive the last stretch to Radha's village. We can meet your train at Mathura Junction.

  • Where to board: trains run from the Delhi and NCR side towards Mathura Junction.

  • Nearest railhead to Barsana: Mathura Junction, about 42 to 45 km away.

  • The last leg: from Mathura Junction, Barsana is about an hour by road.

  • We can meet your train at Mathura Junction and take you to Barsana.

Ghaziabad to Barsana by air

For this distance, flying makes little sense. There is no airport at Barsana or Mathura; the nearest major one is Delhi, from which Ghaziabad and the NCR are already close, so you would drive in any case. Since the road journey from Ghaziabad is a comfortable half-day, a car is by far the simplest way.

  • Nearest major airport: Delhi (Indira Gandhi International).

  • From Delhi and the NCR, the whole journey is by road.

  • Coming soon: the new Noida International Airport at Jewar will be closer to Braj.

  • For the Ghaziabad to Barsana journey itself, a car is the answer.

Ghaziabad to Barsana by bus

Buses are the budget option. State and private buses run from the Delhi and NCR side towards Mathura and the Barsana area, taking around 3.5 to 4 hours, from where a local ride brings you to the village. It is cheaper than a car but slower and less direct, and best for those travelling light and on a tight budget.

The best way to travel

The right choice depends on your time and budget. A private car is the most flexible and comfortable, taking you door to door and up towards the hill; a train to Mathura is a good-value alternative for part of the way; and the bus is the cheapest but the slowest. The table sets them side by side.

A quick comparison. For Ghaziabad to Barsana, a private car is most comfortable.

Breaking the journey and what to see on the way

The drive is a comfortable half-day with clean rest stops along the expressway for chai and fuel, so a short break is all you need. Many pilgrims pair Barsana with the nearby village of Nandgaon, Krishna's home, only 8 to 10 km away, and with the wider Braj. As you approach, the four peaks of Bhanugarh hill, crowned by the Radha Rani temple, rise into view over the plain.

What to see when you arrive

At Barsana, the great darshan is the hilltop Radha Rani temple, also called Shriji or Ladli Ji, reached by about 200 to 225 steps or a ropeway or palki, one of the very few temples in the world dedicated chiefly to Radha. On another peak stands the Maan Mandir, and nearby lie the lovely Prem Sarovar and Sanket, the meeting place of Radha and Krishna. Just beyond lies Krishna's village of Nandgaon, the two forever linked by their divine love and their famous Lathmar Holi.

The best time to visit

The cool months of October to March are much the best for the journey and the hill climb, while the summer is fierce on the exposed hilltop. Barsana is at its most spectacular, and most crowded, during Lathmar Holi, a few days before the main Holi, and at Radhashtami, Radha's birthday and the greatest day at Barsana. See our best time to visit Mathura Vrindavan guide and the Mathura Vrindavan festivals calendar to plan, and book far ahead for the festivals.

Tips for the journey

  • Take the Eastern Peripheral Expressway and NH 44 route to skirt the Delhi traffic.

  • Barsana is west of Mathura, so the Yamuna Expressway is not the natural route.

  • For elders, arrange the ropeway or palki up Bhanugarh hill in advance.

  • Pair Barsana with Nandgaon, only 8 to 10 km away, for the fuller Radha-Krishna story.

  • For Lathmar Holi or Radhashtami, book far ahead and expect immense crowds.

  • Come October to March, and start early for a calm hilltop darshan.

The honest bit

Honest words on the Ghaziabad to Barsana journey, from one born in Braj. This is a comfortable half-day drive, and the expressway routes make it easy from the NCR. The one thing to understand is the geography: Barsana lies west of Mathura, so the Yamuna Expressway, which so many assume is the way, is actually longer and slower here, and the Eastern Peripheral Expressway with NH 44 is the better line. Barsana is a rural hilltop village, so come prepared for the climb of 200-plus steps, or arrange the ropeway or palki, and for festival crowds. Distances are approximate. Beware anyone selling paid VIP darshan; entry is free. If you would rather stay overnight in Braj, see our Mathura Vrindavan hotels.

Why Experience My India is the right choice

I was born in Gokul in the Mathura district, and I welcome travellers from Ghaziabad and the NCR every week, and take them up to Radha Rani's temple. Guiding since 2018, more than 50,000 pilgrims, 4.5 stars on Google, WhatsApp first, 8 AM to 9 PM daily. We drive you the whole way or meet you at Mathura Junction, arrange the ropeway or palki up the hill, guide you at the right hour for a smooth darshan, take in Nandgaon and the sacred spots between, and arrange any seva, with no touts and no false VIP promises. One clear fare, and never a charge for free darshan.

Tip from Gurudutt: set out from Ghaziabad early, and reach Barsana in the cool of the late morning, before the midday sun on the exposed hill. Climb, or take the ropeway, to the Radha Rani temple, and look out from Bhanugarh hill across the green Braj plain to Nandgaon, Krishna's village, on its own hill in the distance. To stand on Radha's hill and see Krishna's hill across the fields is to feel the divine love of Braj as a living thing in the land. Then, if you can, cross to Nandgaon too.

"We were planning a Barsana trip from Ghaziabad and wanted everything to be comfortable for our parents. Experience My India arranged a private car and planned the journey perfectly. The driver knew the route well and we reached Barsana without any trouble. They also helped us arrange the ropeway for Radha Rani Temple, which was very useful for the elderly members of our family. Excellent service and very good local coordination."

Mathura Parikrama: The Route, Sacred Stops, Timings and How to Do It

Quick answer: the Mathura Parikrama is the sacred circumambulation of Mathura, a walk of about 10 km (6.2 miles) that takes around 3 hours to complete. It is done mainly on Ekadashi, and traditionally begins and ends at Kansa Fort (Kans Qila), passing along the Yamuna ghats, the guardian Shiva temples, the Devi shrines, Potara Kund and the Krishna Janmabhoomi, before returning to Kansa Fort. Entry is free; it is walked barefoot and chanting, ideally before dawn. To walk it with a local guide, call or WhatsApp +91 7302265809.
